A very good friend of mine is the RI General Secretary and I'm always amazed when he shares with me all the fantastic charity work this organization does around the world. At the upper levels of Rotary they do great things, at the "user level" with guys like you and me it's basically a chance to hob nob/network with other business types.

Actually they do more than just give money to charities, they often create, plan and execute many charitable efforts around the world. They created and drove a program to get fresh water to may locations in Africa and Asia. The effort included RI overseeing the development and coordinating the distribution of equipment to purify water so these remote villages could produce drinkable water from their contaminated water supplies. The point being they didn't just give the money to some group and let them do the work, Rotary International did the work.

Wow, do you have a jumble there. At least three different types of organizations. The Masons are a quasi-religious, secret rites type organization. The Shriners may be similar, but to tell you the truth I don't know much about them aside from the fact that they support some hospitals in a kick ass way. Elks, Moose (and Eagles, Oddfellows, etc.) are basically social clubs. Then you have service clubs like Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions, Optimists, Sertoma, etc. They are, as SJ said, on one level a networking organization for businesspeople and interested others. But on a larger scale, they all raise tremendous money for charitable causes, and at least some, like Rotary, get involved in organizing and completing those projects themselves as well.

Just today, our (Rotary) club announced that we've approved a $3,500 grant to a club in Lebanon which will add money of their own, and money from various other levels of US Rotary, to provide a generator to an orphanage in Lebanon. We also contributed over $30,000 for the kids of families wrecked by meth in Mesa County last year. We provide dictionaries to every 3rd grader in Mesa County each year, and school supplies to all the schools at the start of each school year. The Lions Club here raises well over $100,000 a year for charity with their carnival. All of which is fairly typical of these types of organizations.

Scoff all you want 96, as I'm sure you'd rather entrust all these things to the government, but these clubs do a lot of good around the world. Plus, they give Dan Hawkins a chance to speak. What more can you ask for, really?? :thumbsup:

I'm only mildly scoffing; We pretty much said the same things about them, I just wasn't as nice about it. I happen to think social (formerly known as "fraternal" until those were deemed discriminatory) organizations are lame, but do not doubt they do solid charitible works. Their primary purpose always has been and always will be good-ol-boy networking, though.

My Rotary Club just gave away $6,000 to three kids attending Colorado Schools next year. Two of which will be going to CU.

If you're going to make blanket statements about an organization, I suggest you learn a little more about it. Maybe go to a couple meetings. Rotary is one of the largest philanthropic organizations on the planet.

I happen to think social (formerly known as "fraternal" until those were deemed discriminatory) organizations are lame, but do not doubt they do solid charitible works. Their primary purpose always has been and always will be good-ol-boy networking, though.

Yeah the good-ol-boy network aspect of the organization is clearly the motor behind the charity work that gets done by Rotary, Lions, etc. Seems out of place that that would be the case. I originally assumed that an organization who's main activity is people gathering together to promote their own personal business interests would be an organization that ultimately would just serve itself. It's kind of cool and it says a lot about the integrity of the senior leadership of these groups that they have taken the potential that these gatherings create and used it to serve the world.

Good for you, playing in the old man band. Our Rotary club had a band that sprung up and has raised a lot of money for charity. A great way for people with talent to have some fun and help a good cause at the same time... :smile: But as much as I'd love to come dance with some old people, I'm afraid I already have plans that weekend. Maybe DBT and FC would like to come by and hang with some of their peers, though. :wink2: And if you could learn some Counting Crows, I'm sure Sacky would be there in a flash... :cool:

Well, there is a lot of truth the old adage "It's not what you know, it's who you know". I got my client for my new biz from a referral from a friend. He certainly never advertised the position...

I can honestly say that in the five years I've been in Rotary I haven't gotten one client or loan as a direct result of my membership. The indirect benefits are real, but more difficult to quantify.

I've never viewed Rotary as a good-ol-boy network. I view it for what it is, a worldwide charitable organization that has a presence in nearly every community. It's membership is generally made up of local business leaders, but if you really think about it, it's business leaders that really get stuff done anyway.
