Adam mentioned Mahalak over at Rivals earlier today. Very intriguing prospect whose stock is taking off during the Spring Evaluation Period. We recently offered his teammate Gunnar Graham and his school is largely on the radar due to Cal QB commit Jared Goff.
Mahalak has yet to play at the varsity level, but he will be at the Elite 11 camp stop this coming week and has secured several camp invites including CU:
Morgan Mahalak @MorganMahalak
Good talk with coach Rip #Colorado, looking forward to visiting this summer.. #buffs
As you can see from the highlights, he is a dual-threat QB and has heavy interest in Oregon and Notre Dame early on (will be camping at both schools in addition to CU). USC is also slated to stop by his school tomorrow:
Doug Benton @DougBenton
#USC will visit Marin Catholic on May 14 to see 2014 quarterback Morgan Mahalak throw.

New highlights on there. He'll only get one year of starting on the varsity squad, so he needs to show well this spring and summer in camps to gather scholarships. He's definitely a good athlete (plays WR a good bit in the highlights).

Adam reported on it earlier this week and 247 confirmed that we had a coach (Klayton Adams) visit Mahalak on Tuesday.

I did read somewhere, allegedly from someone who attended the camp here at CU last summer, that Mahalak outperformed Sefo during that camp. FWIW - definitely 2nd hand information from a non-expert. But he did believe that Rip was VERY interested in this kid. His recruiting could likely blow up as he moves into a starting role.

I doubt we have to wait til September to find out. I'm sure he'll land some offers in the Spring and will be committed by then

Yeah, you're right about that. Sounds like he will be hitting the camps hard, so it won't take until Fall. Most QBs commit in the spring or early summer.

We should be in the market to take one QB next year and possibly one QB/ATH if they are the right fit.

He got an offer from Oregon State today. In a year lacking much top-end QB talent out West, I think Mahalak is one of the intriguing prospects worth taking a gamble on.

Picked up his second BCS offer from Duke this week.
Something to keep in mind: the way things are trending in spring practices, we can legitimately sell early playing time to QBs.

Offered by NC State today.
As I have said elsewhere, this does not appear to be a great class for QBs out West in terms of can't-miss prospects (2015 looks loaded), but seems pretty deep in developmental types. Should be interesting to see who the staff targets.

Hard to compete with an Oregon offer at this point. Hope I am not saying that in 3-5 yrs though!

Hard to know where he fell on our coaches' board. Not being a sunshine pumper either (I personally like him as a prospect).

You hit on a good point about the coaches board. Not because of his ability (I like him as a prospect as well) but as a question of investment of time and resources.
We aren't at that point yet and there are certain kids who the coaches get a pretty good idea are just waiting for an offer from a "higher profile" school and who are likely to get one.
It's a tough call but our coaches have to put their energy and time into the very best players who we have a reasonable chance of getting and not waste time on kids who are going to end up someplace else.
Oregon has won a lot of games and been on national TV a lot over the past few years. With some kids that clearly tilts the balance no matter what the coaches say while recruiting.

New staff was definitely recruiting him.

New staff was definitely recruiting him.
I know they were, does not mean we know what the QB board looks like.

Sure be nice just to snap your fingers and have a quality recruit commit

Mtn is right, we need to find one of those dual threat QBs that won't commit to Oregon on the spot.

Good thing is that if M2 keeps working enough of these guys he should be able to convince somebody to come in. We can't offer Oregon's recent record but M2 can point to his success at SJSU in turning a team around and in turning a QB into a guy who should be fairly high on the draft boards next year. Add to that a high likelyhood of some serious bench time at a place like Oregon and he has a chance to get someone who can be a difference maker.

Heh.
I just hope Mac isn't stupid enough to stop pursuing kids that would jump on an Oregon offer.

Hmmm. Is Mahalak a dual-threat QB? I've been reading that Helfrich's newerish O will be more pass-happy.

Good luck to him. I prefer Campbell or Martin.
