KANSAS CITY, MO. — Baylor missed two starters, including 6-foot-8 freshman sensation Brittney Griner, but still had enough to eliminate No. 11 seed Colorado 72-65 Thursday night in the first round of the Big 12 women's tournament at Municipal Auditorium.
Getting 24 points from junior forward Brittany Spears, Colorado (13-17) led for much of the game but could not hit key shots down the stretch and saw its season come to an end.
Baylor (23-8), the No. 5 seed and defending Big 12 tournament champion, advanced to face third-seeded Oklahoma tonight at 6:30. A 3-pointer by freshman guard Jordan Madden with 39 seconds left gave Baylor breathing room with a six-point cushion.
