Assistant Coach/Quarterbacks
On Monday January 24th what many of us knew already became public knowledge and Colorado Head Coach Jon Embree completed the last major hire of his staff, welcoming Rip Scherer into the fold. Coach Scherer brings to the staff a wealth of College and Professional coaching experience having twice been a college head coach and spending the past 6 years in the NFL.
Family Life:
Rip grew up in Pittsburgh where his family still resides; he is a former college quarterback who lettered three straight years at William and Mary.
Coaching Career:
Coach Scherer started his career almost immediately after he finished playing in 1974 at Penn State. From there he moved through the assistant coaching ranks with: NC state, Hawai'i and Virginia before beginning a long stint with Georgia Tech which culminated in Scherer being named the offensive coordinator in 1986. From there Scherer took OC positions with Alabama and Arizona before being named the head coach at James Madison university in 1991.
At JMU Coach Scherer lead the program through what is widely considered the hay-day of JMU football. Coach Scherer's teams tied or broke 140 JMU records and receiving an at-large birth to the 1-AA playoffs. The Success at JMU soon parlayed itself into a new head coaching opportunity with the Memphis Tigers. During his 6 seasons with Memphis the tigers struggled as they often do, compiling only an average of 4 wins per season.
From Memphis Coach Scherer made the jump to the Pro's where he remained until being recruited to CU by Coach Embree.
