Jalil Brown Corner Back Prospect 2011 NFL Draft
Jalil Brown was the third, final, and perhaps largest surprise of Dan Hawkins 2006 recruiting class. Jalil Brown was rated as the lowest possible level of 2 star athlete by Rivals.com coming out of high school despite possessing reported measurables of 4.4 speed and 6'1" 195lbs, being a three year Letterman, and having a stellar high school track career. As many of us have since learned recruiting rankings don't always pan out. Like Jimmy Smith, Jalil brown red-shirted his freshman season at CU and began to contribute lightly on special teams as a red-shirt freshman, maturing from there into a partial starter during his Sophomore season (6 games) before locking down a full-time spot as a Jr while tying Jimmy Smith for the team lead in INT's.
A Look Back at Jalil Brown's Early career:
- Our recruiting Profile
- From CUBuffs.com: A three-year letterman in football, he was first-team All-State and First-Team All-Metro Region on offense (running back) and defense (safety) as a senior. On offense, he had 1,910 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns on the ground, with 15 receptions for 400 yards and three more scores by air. Defensively, he totaled 30 tackles, five for losses including four quarterback sacks. He also recorded three fumble recoveries, a forced fumble, 12 passes broken up and had one interception.
- Born October 14, 1987 in Phoenix, Ariz. Hobbies include reading books and playing video games. A cousin, Kenny Brown, played football at UTEP in the early 1990s. He was home schooled as a prep by his mother and he has aspirations of starting his own business after completing college. He was the final recruit of coach Dan Hawkins' first CU recruiting class, signing in April.
Jalil Brown's CU Career:
Like Classmate Jimmy Smith Jalil Brown red-shirted his freshman year and started his history of contribution as a RS-Freshman in 2007 where he saw action in all 13 games play extensively on special teams (leading the team in points) and sparing in the secondary at Free Safety and Corner. Jalil's career at CU progressed nicely starting 6 games in 2008 at nickle back and then 10 games in 2009 along side Jimmy Smith forming what would become one of the Big-12's top corner pairings. In 2010 Jalil continued to be a team leader and was national recognized as one of the best corners in the college games. He started all 12 games for CU playing all but 10 snaps this season. Brown was often forced to cover our opponents top receiver as even such talents as AJ Green were shifted to his side of the field to avoid direct match up's with Jimmy Smith. Over the course of the season Jalil recorded 46 tackles, a team high 5 passes defended and a team high 3 interceptions.
Jalil Brown in the 2012 draft class:
Jalil ranked as Phil Steele's number 65 player in the senior draft class coming in and for most of the season has been foretasted as a mid round pick. He is hoping that his surprising size for a corner and purported strength (rumored to be in the 20+ rep range for the Bench) will launch him further up the draft board. Needless to say he is looking for a strong showing at the NFL Combine.
