No. 33 Illinois rallied to win the event with an 863 team score, 1-under par for the three rounds. The Illini bested host and No. 12 Arkansas (864), which took a one stroke advantage into the day after wrestling the lead away from first round leader Illinois. No. 4 Texas finished third (880), followed by No. 11 Oklahoma State (882) and No. 22 Kent State (892). The same five teams occupied the top five spots after all three rounds.

The top five teams in the field advanced to the NCAA Finals, set for May 28-June 2 in Atlanta, Ga., along with the top two individual not associated with the five teams that qualified.

The Buffaloes, ranked No. 58 by GolfStat and No. 67 by Golfweek, were in ninth place and 11 strokes back of fifth at the start of the day. Early on, CU closed to within eight shots of the Golden Flashes, but could get no closer in shooting 21-over for round (309) and finishing with a 47-over total of 911.

“It may not appear that way because the score was a stroke lower, but we had a better day today – the course played its hardest of the three days,” head coach Roy Edwards said. “It was tough, and it would have taken a special round, almost an extreme round to qualify (catch and pass Kent State for fifth). The guys had a great effort today, the key was yesterday, we just let it get out of hand. Had we played better in the second round, we would have given ourselves a legitimate shot today to advance.”

Senior Derek Fribbs led the Buffaloes, tying for 21st after closing with a 5-over 77 on the 7,251-yard, par-72 The Blessings Golf Club course layout for an 8-over 224. He opened with six start pars and then got it to 1-under after making birdie on No. 16; but he played the next 10 holes at 7-over (three bogeys, two doubles in that span), but ended his career with a birdie on No. 9. He had five birdies over the three rounds, with his 35 pars tied for the fifth most in the 75-man field.

Freshman Philip Juel-Berg finished with a 4-over 76, CU’s best score of the day, which gave him a 10-over 226 total that tied him for 30th. He bogeyed three of his first four holes before reeling off nine straight pars and then would wrap up his impressive true freshman year with a birdie on No. 9. He had five birdies, 34 pars and 15 bogeys in the regional, also ending his year with seven consecutive rounds where he did not score worse than bogey on any hole. Juel-Berg finished tied for seventh out of the 14 freshmen in the field (all true, no redshirts) and his 34 pars were the eighth most overall.

Sophomore David Oraee fashioned a final round 6-over 78 to give him a 13-over 229 score, tying him for 39th; he had two birdies, nine pars, six bogeys and a double Saturday. He had just three of the pars on the back nine but stood only 1-over after birdying No. 16, but couldn’t get any other birdie putts to fall the remainder of the round. His first round 1-under 71 was CU’s best single round effort here, and his eight birdies were the second most by a Buffalo.

Senior Jason Burstyn wrapped up his collegiate career with a 6-over 78, which have him a 16-over 232 total, tying him for 47th. He had three birdies and nine pars against three bogeys and three doubles Saturday; his 10 birdies for the week were a team best and also tied for 14th in the field. He was undone by the fact that he had almost as many holes over par (21) as he did pars (23). He was 1-under through seven holes after back-to-back birdies on Nos. 15 and 16, but doubles on Nos. 18 and 3 sent him well into black numbers for the round.

Junior Johnny Hayes tied for 66th with a 29-over 245 total, as he closed things out with an 8-over 80. He was actually 8-over after seven holes, enduring a triple bogey on No. 12 and a double on No. 16, but then settled down to play the rest of the way even; he parred the next nine holes before making a bogey on No. 8 but finished with a birdie on No. 9. He had 31 pars for the week, third-most for the Buffs, but had a team-high seven holes of double bogey or higher which accounted for 19 of his 29 strokes over par.

SMU’s Mario Clemens, the co-leader through two rounds, finished with a 3-under 213 total to defeat three others by one stroke to claim medalist honors. The round of the day belonged to Missouri-Kansas City’s Nathan Hughes, who shot a 69 which included a 33 on the back nine, where he made six birdies (on 10, 12, 13, 15, 16 and 17); he scored a par on 18 but doubles on Nos. 11 and 14 ruined what could have been an incredible sub-30 score.

Edwards made special mention of his two graduating seniors who participated here, Burstyn and Fribbs.

“Those two guys played in a ton of events for us over the last four years,” Edwards noted. “We’re going to miss them; they’re great people and were great representatives for CU. They are Buffs forever, and I couldn’t be more proud of any two people than I am of them.”

“We definitely had a really good season -- if we had advanced from here, it would have been a great one,” Edwards concluded. “I am certainly very proud of our team, proud of our seniors and pleased with the direction that the program is heading.”

NOTES: The Pac-12 sent 10 teams into regional play, the most of any conference, and five have moved on to the NCAA Finals: California (won the Pullman Regional), UCLA (won the Tempe Regional), Washington, USC and Arizona State ... The average score in the field Saturday was 77.31, up from 77.07 (second round) and 75.55 (first round); the average score for the week was 76.64 (CU’s was 77.07, 75.92 by the four daily scorers, 81.67 by the fifth score that was thrown out) ... Burstyn finished as CU’s stroke average leader with a 73.12 figure, edging Fribbs (73.32) by eight strokes over 41 rounds; Fribbs finished ahead of Burstyn for the top average in the spring (73.79 to 74.17; Juel-Berg was a close third at 74.25) ... Fribbs finished his CU career with 146 rounds played, fourth most in school history, while Burstyn played 134, the 12th most ... Colorado came into the meet tied for third in the nation with 20 eagles, but scored none here (USC led with 23, Houston was next with 21). The Buffs also were sixth in greens-in-regulation (65.9 percent) and seventh in fairways hit (70.4), numbers that will drop a bit in the next national rankings ... Juel-Berg played 41 rounds this season, tying him for the school record for the most ever by a freshman, true or redshirt; Terry Kahl played 41 as a true frosh in 1976-77 ... Juel-Berg’s 73.95 season stroke average was the third best by a freshman in school history, behind Kane Webber (73.03, 1999-2000) and Matthew Zions (73.76, 1998-99) .... Colorado finished with 18 holes of double bogey or worse (15 doubles, two triples and a quintuple totaling 41 strokes over par); the seventh fewest in the field; eight came on Saturday.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The University of Colorado men’s golf team struggled mightily here Friday in the second round of the NCAA Central/Fayetteville Regional, slipping three spots into ninth place as the Buffaloes now have their work cut out for them to earn a berth into the NCAA Finals.

Host and No. 12 Arkansas made the most of its home course advantage, shot the only round under par Friday and zoomed from fifth to first with a 3-under over team score of 573. No. 33 Illinois, the first round leader, is one stroke back at 574. No. 4 Texas is third (583), followed by No. 11 Oklahoma State (590) and No. 22 Kent State (591).

The Buffaloes, ranked No. 58 by GolfStat and No. 67 by Golfweek, entered the round in sixth place and just two strokes out of the fifth and final qualifying spot. But at the end of the day, CU held the ninth place position and is 11 strokes back of the last advancing spot after a 22-over 310 for a total score of 602 (26-over).

The top five teams out of 14 competing will advance to the NCAA Finals, set for May 28-June 2 in Atlanta, Ga., as will the top two individuals not associated with the five teams that qualify.

“The course was playing a lot more difficult and we played poorly at the worst possible time, head coach Roy Edwards said. “We had three guys go high and had to count two 80s, and you just can’t get away with that. You have to be consistent to advance, and it will now take an extremely good round to move on. So we’re a little frustrated but have to put it behind us.”

“We were a little off early,” Edwards said of his team’s collective start, which saw the Buffaloes score 12 bogeys and a double before their first birdie on the 9th hole. “We also didn’t play the 10th hole very well, a wedge par-3 (139 yards) and had a couple of rough stretches.

It has more to do with how many big numbers you make here instead of the birdies that you don’t. We avoided the big numbers in the first round, but we couldn’t today, and that’s something you have to do here.”

Colorado can draw on the fact that in three different tournaments, it shot the best score in the final round, riding one to a victory in its own CU-Mark Simpson Invitational and another to a second place finish in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic.

Also, in 1999, the Buffaloes recorded the second largest final round comeback at the time in the 11 years of regional play, making up nine strokes in leaping from 18th place into a tie for 10th and then defeating Kent State on the first playoff hole; Arkansas still owns the biggest comeback, jumping from 20th into 10th in 1990. (The regionals doubled in 2009, with five advancing from six sites instead of 10 from three.)

“That’s definitely something we will talk about,” Edwards noted. “We have proven that we have been able to do that in the past, go out and play our best in the final round, and it’s something that we’ll shoot for doing (Saturday).”

Senior Derek Fribbs shot CU’s best score of the day, a 1-over 73 on the 7,251-yard, par-72 The Blessings Golf Club course layout. He spent the entire round either 1-over, even or 1-under, which he stood at one point through 15 after he birdied the par-3. But bogeys on Nos. 16 and 18 finished his round, two of just three he had in the round while scoring two birdies and 13 pars. His 3-over total of 147 is Colorado’s best through 26 holes and has him tied for 23rd. His 24 pars are tied for the third most in the 75-man field.

Freshman Philip Juel-Berg turned in a 5-over 77 for a 150 total (plus-6), as he recorded a birdie, 11 pars and six bogeys for his round. He’s the only Buffalo not to record a score worse than a bogey in two rounds, a streak that has reached six rounds overall. Of the 14 freshmen in the field; Juel-Berg is currently eighth among them and is tied for 32nd overall.

Sophomore David Oraee shot an 8-over 80 for a 36-hole total of 151 (7-over), tying him for 34th; he had two birdies, eight pars, six bogeys and two doubles on his round. He was just 2-over on the front, parring the last five holes after back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 3 and 4, but then went through a stretch from Nos. 10 through 14 where he bogeyed the first four and then doubled 15. He bounced back to birdie 16 and 17, but he closed with a double on 18.

Senior Jason Burstyn also struggled to an 80, which gave him a 154 (12-over) total to tie him for 44th; he had the most birdies (3) but also the fewest pars (5) by a Buff on Friday, as he had nine bogeys and double in not getting anything going early. He was 5-over after 6 and 8-over after 11 before he made his first birdie in the round on the par-5 12th, starting a stretch where he birdied three of five holes.

Junior Johnny Hayes is tied for 68th with a 21-over 165 total, as he shot a 13-over 85 in the second round. He was 1-over through eight and seemingly in control of things, but a bogey on No. 9 followed by doubles on Nos. 10 and 12 and then a disastrous quintuple on No. 14 led to his high score. He had 11 pars but no birdies on the day.

Arkansas’s Austin Cook (72-68) and SMU’s Mario Clemens (70-70) are tied for the individual lead with 4-under 140 scorecards. First round leader, Illinois freshman Charlie Danielson, shot a 6-over 78 after a sizzling 65 in the first round that had earned him a three stroke edge at the time.

The final round is set for a 6:30 a.m. start on Saturday; Colorado is paired with SMU an UNC-Wilmington and will begin play on the No. 10 tee.

NOTES: The start of the second round was delayed approximately 30 minutes due to fog ... Ten Pac-12 teams are competing in the NCAA Regionals, six of which remained in the top four for the second straight day, including top-ranked California and No. 3 UCLA which are leading their respective events in Tallahassee and Tempe; a seventh is in fifth place and all are in the top 10 ... The average score in the field Friday was 77.07, up from 75.55 in the first round ... Fribbs played his 145th career round, now along by himself with the fourth most in school history; Burstyn played his 133rd, tying him for 12with Knut Ekjord (1994-99) ... Juel-Berg has now played 40 rounds, tying him with Michael Imperato (2008) for the second most ever by a freshman at CU; Terry Kahl played 41 in 1976-77 ... The Buffaloes had eight birdies Friday after 16 on Thursday ... Through two rounds, CU’s problem has been multiple bogeys more so than big number: the Buffaloes have 10 holes of double bogey or worse (eight doubles, a triple and a quintuple totaling 24 strokes over par); that’s tied for the third fewest holes and strokes behind Arkansas (five doubles, three triples, +19) and UNC-Wilmington (seven doubles, two quadruples, +22).

Haug was one of 12 student-athletes honored in District 7, which encompasses Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming.
Haug, a Business major, has a cumulative grade point average of 3.98 (all A’s and one A-minus). This is a repeat honor for Haug, who was named to the All-District team and eventually named third-team Academic All-American a year ago.

At the 2012 NCAA Championships, he was given the Elite 89 Award for skiing, given to the student-athlete competing at the NCAA Championships with the highest cumulative GPA. That season he was also named CU’s Scholar-Athlete Award winner, given to the top GPA amongst all sophomore student-athletes at CU.

He helped the Buffs to the 2013 NCAA Championship by finishing 13 of 14 races on the season. He compiled 12 top 20 finishes and four top 10 performances. He had his best outing at the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association (RMISA) Championships when he finished fifth in the giant slalom and seventh in the slalom, helping the Buffs claim the RMISA Championship, as well.

He is a three-time National Academic Award Winner as presented by the United States Collegiate Ski Coaches Association (USCSCA) for maintaining above a 3.5 grade point average and he is also a three-time member of CU’s 4.0 Club.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The University of Colorado men’s golf team opened strong here Thursday in the NCAA Central/Fayetteville Regional, with the Buffaloes in sixth place and definitely in contention for a top five finish and the berth into the NCAA Finals that comes with it.

No. 33 Illinois leads the pack with a 6-under 282 score, thanks to the efforts of two true freshmen that combined to go 11 strokes under what some call the “happy side of par.” No. 4 Texas is second (285), followed by No. 11 Oklahoma State (286), No. 22 Kent State (288) and No. 12 and host Arkansas (290).

The Buffaloes, ranked No. 58 by GolfStat and No. 67 by Golfweek, turned in a 4-over 292 to stand in sixth. No. 20 SMU is five back of CU, with the remaining seven teams in the field all at 300 or higher.

The top five teams out of 14 competing will advance to the NCAA Finals, set for May 28-June 2 in Atlanta, Ga., as will the top two individuals not associated with the five teams that qualify.

The four Buffs who contributed to the team score made the turn at 1-over; they had a collective hiccup on the first four holes on the front side (4-over), but played the last five at 1-under. The end result was Colorado placing four in the top 25 through 18 holes, matched only by Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas, three of the nation’s top 12 teams.

“It was definitely a good start, which we chalk up to our primary focus today being was to be patient and have a great attitude,” head coach Roy Edwards said. “The guys were phenomenal with that. I’m really proud of them, and that’s really the main reason we enjoyed a solid round.

“We need to do the same thing for tomorrow,” he continued. “That’s to be patient, take it one shot at a time. Right now, they’re only thinking about their first tee shot (Friday). You cannot get ahead of yourself here. It rained overnight and the course was really soft, so it played as easiest as it’s going to get today. The scores are likely not going to be as low, so the emphasis will be on the importance of being patient. That’s what we’ll stress.”

Sophomore David Oraee led the Buffaloes with a 1-under 71, which has him tied for ninth individually. He had a steady round with four birdies and 11 pars against three bogeys; the four birds tied for 10th most in the field. Playing to even par much of the round, he finished with birdies on Nos. 7 and 9 with a bogeys sandwiched in-between to get it into red numbers on the 7,251-yard, par-72 The Blessings Golf Club course layout.

Freshman Philip Juel-Berg continued his stellar rookie season, posting a 1-over 73, which has him tied for 20th. He had three birdies, 11 pars and four bogeys on his day, as he made the turn at 3-over but played the front side at 2-under, thanks to birds on Nos. 6 and 9.

There are 14 freshmen in the field; Juel-Berg finished currently is seventh among them, with three of the six ahead of him recording even-par rounds of 72.

CU’s No. 1 player and stroke average leader, senior Jason Burstyn, fashioned a 2-over 74, tying him for 25th; he had four birdies like Oraee, along with nine pars, four bogeys and one double. The latter came on No. 6, a 418-yard, par-4 that played as the day’s fourth toughest hole; that pushed him to 4-over on the day, but he bounced back and closed with birdies on Nos. 7 and 9.

Senior Derek Fribbs also shot a 74, with three birdies and 11 pars against three bogeys and a double. He got off to one of the hot starts of the day, standing 3-under after he birdied Nos. 12, 13 and 15 – a par-5, a par-4 and a par-3, respectively – but came back down to Earth with bogeys on No. 17 and then on Nos. 1 and 4. He was cruising along at even par until his final hole of the day, the 535-yard, par-5 No. 9, where he doubled after hitting his drive into a hazard. It was his first double bogey in six rounds.

“I was hitting it in their close and utilizing the slopes,” Fribbs said of his start. “But after a while, the putts weren’t falling. I still had opportunities on the back nine, I just couldn’t make any putts to take full advantage of things. The course played a little easier today than expected because you could hold your shots better than we thought, but we also had good course management today.”

Junior Johnny Hayes shot an 8-over 80, tying him for 60th, as he recorded two birdies and nine pars against five bogeys, a double and a triple. He scored the latter two in his first four holes to get to 5-over quickly, but settled down over the final 14 holes.

“Johnny had a rough start, but regrouped and then held it together pretty well for a bad start,” Edwards said. “For the most part, any time anyone made a mistake, they worked hard to make a bogey and nothing worse.”

Hayes certainly wasn’t alone in his struggles; the average score by the non-scorer for all 14 teams on Thursday was an 81.6; he actually tied for the fourth lowest as only three managed to break 80. Despite his troubles, he played the par-3 holes at a collective 1-under, tied for eighth best in the field.

Illinois freshman Charlie Danielson turned in the best round of the day to take the individual lead, as the 2012 Wisconsin state high school champion opened on the back nine and shot a 30, including five birdies over a seven hole span; he added two more birdies on the front side to finish with a 7-under 65. Freshmen dominated the top of the leaderboard Thursday, with Oklahoma State’s Jordan Niebrugge tied for second (67) and Illinois’ Thomas Detry fourth (68).

The field has been re-paired according to score for Friday’s second round; Colorado, the No. 10 seed here, will tee it up off the No. 1 tee beginning at 7:20 a.m. MDT with Kent State (No. 5 seed) and Arkansas (No. 2), who occupy the fourth and fifth spots ahead of the Buffs. The final round is set for a 7:50 a.m. start on Saturday.

NOTES: There are 10 Pac-12 teams competing in the NCAA Regionals, six of which are currently in the top four after one round, including top-ranked California and No. 3 UCLA which are leading their respective events in Tallahassee and Tempe ... The average score in the field Thursday was 75.55 (75 rounds) ... Fribbs played his 144th career round, tying him with five others for the fourth most in school history ... The Buffaloes had 16 birdies and 51 pars, or 74.4 percent of their holes played at par or better (14 and 42, by the four scorers, or 78 percent) ... Edwards has emphasized the importance of patience and playing smart to keep the Buffs from a lot of high individual holes; that emphasis paid off Thursday, as CU had just three doubles and one triple by its five players, or big numbers that added to 9-over par; only Kent State (two doubles, +4) and Texas (one triple and one quadruple, +7) had fewer holes and strokes of double bogey or worse in the field.
BOULDER – University of Colorado women’s golf coach Anne Kelly has announced that Victoria Glenn will continue her education and play golf at CU.

“We are very excited about adding Tori Glenn to our roster next year,” Kelly said. “Tori is a young golfer, but has an amazing amount of talent and the work ethic to take advantage of her talent. She brings with her a lot of enthusiasm and excitement about attending CU and playing college golf. We certainly are looking forward to working with Tori and watching her college career take off.”

Glenn, a 5-foot-7 Castle Pines, Colo. native, will join fellow incoming freshmen Claudia Davis and Natalie Vivaldi, who signed National Letters of Intent in November.

A former state champion gymnast, Glenn turned to golf after a serious injury ended her gymnastics career after her freshman year. Glenn says that once she found golf, she also found a new direction in life, and the proof is in the numbers. In three varsity seasons with the Valor Christian women’s golf team, Glenn and the Eagles won three straight Colorado High School 4A Regional Championships and back-to-back 4A State Championships in her final two seasons.

In just her second season playing varsity golf, Glenn cut 20 strokes off her first year average. As a junior, she was named the Jefferson County MVP. She placed first individually in the Jeffco 4A League, had a top 10 performance at the state championship and earned seven first place finishes through 4A league and invitational play. She was also named first-team all-conference and a Valor Christian Champion of the Week.

She continued to improve in her senior season, recording top five finishes in all of her team’s 4A and 5A invitationals, including four first place finishes. She also earned her second Valor Christian Champion of the Week title.

Glenn also had strong performances in amateur tournaments in 2012. She came in second place at the RMJGT Tournament of Champions and won the match play round at the RMJGT Ryder Cup, both in Scottsdale, Ariz. She also received the RMJGT Sportsmanship of the Year Award in December 2012.

At her home course of The Ridge at Castle Pines North, she shot a personal best of 69, while her best round in competition was a 71 at the Poudre Invite at Timnath, Colo.’s Harmony Golf Club.

Glenn has also excelled in the classroom, as a summa cum laude her freshman year and magna cum laude her sophomore and junior years. She is also a member of the National Honors Society. At CU, she hopes to study integrative physiology in pursuit of a career in the medical industry.

Victoria Sheridan Glenn was born on December 13, 1994 in Littleton, Colo. Her parents are Geoff, the CEO of Three G Body and Paint Incorporated in Littleton, and Rolinda Glenn, an accountant. Glenn has one younger brother, Tanner, who currently attends Valor Christian. Glenn enjoys skiing, scuba diving, riding all-terrain vehicles, playing piano and traveling. She says an interesting fact about her is that her grandmother is Japanese. Though Glenn had contact with six other schools, she chose CU because she loves Boulder, felt welcomed by the team and comfortable that the coaching staff could take her game to a new level.

( MARK LEFFINGWELL )

After a four-year absence, the Colorado golf team is thrilled to be back in the NCAA Tournament.

Beginning Thursday, the Buffaloes will compete in the Central/Fayetteville Regional at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.

"We're definitely excited," Buffs head coach Roy Edwards said. "It's a goal we have every year and it's one of the goals that we met this year.

"It's where you want to be, especially after last year. We really feel like we did everything possible to get in (in 2012) and just weren't selected."

Teams are selected for the NCAA Tournament much like they are in basketball. CU had a good year last year, but played even better this spring.

"It was nice to not sweat it too bad during the selection knowing we were going to make it," Edwards said.

CU's last trip to the regionals came in 2009, when it finished 13th -- the highest regional finish in program history. That was Edwards' third season as head coach and the Buffs had made it to regionals every year to that point.

"After that, we started rebuilding with a lot of the guys that are on the team now," Edwards said.

Going through the rebuilding process makes this year a satisfying one for CU's two seniors, Jason Burstyn and Derek Fribbs.

"It's my first time in postseason and it's a great opportunity to do some big things," Burstyn said. "It's pretty exciting. It's definitely what we all work for every day, to get to the postseason. We've finally done it and it's a great accomplishment.

"At the same time, it's no time to sit back and relax. We just want to keep going."

The Buffs have a goal of getting through this tournament and into the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 28-June 2. To get there, the Buffs need to finish among the top five teams this week.

"What I understand, apparently it's a very difficult golf course and it puts a premium on hitting the ball in the fairway," Edwards said.

"I'm sure mitigating mistakes is going to be big and the five teams that do that the best are probably going to be ones that advance."

Considering how well they've played most of the year, the Buffs believe they can be one of the five teams that advance.

"I hear the course is very difficult, so if we play smart, we can probably get one of those five sports," Burstyn said. "I like our chances a lot. I think a hard golf course helps us."

In addition to the two seniors, junior Johnny Hayes, sophomore David Oraee and freshmen Philip Juel-Berg are slated to play for the Buffs this week.

Of the five, just two have NCAA regional experience. Hayes went there with Towson in 2010 and Fribbs qualified as an individual player in 2012.

Regardless of the experience going in, the Buffs are excited with where they are going as a program.

"Definitely feel good about where the guys are and where the team is headed," Edwards said.
