Could Cal be next in the NCAA's cross-hairs?

Serious questions brought up around its recruiting of players like Keenan Allen from the Greensboro, NC, area as well as the reported $5k paid to Willie Lyles. Article is from August, but just saw it. Given how long the NCAA takes to investigate things, this is likely active.

I think this was put to bed on the call boards before our game, they seem unconcerned.

There are some dirty looking references up in that article. How does Tosh land a 5* without ever speaking to his head coach at hs? Lots of smoke here.

None of this is shocking really. Nobody ever stops cheating, they just find different ways to do it. You aint cheatin, you aint tryin. Better believe it lol.

Cool...spill the beans on the specifics of JE/EB's cheating to land 4/5 * players.

Im not aware of any that we have, Dillon in some rankings I guess. I think it's probably impossible not to break some rules as ridiculous as they are. Sorry but im not gonna lump Embree and EB in with schools that buy players through street agents and other means. Besides, its not hard to spot schools that are doing just that. Id like to tell you that recruiting is clean with no nonsense but Id be lying. Also, I never even mentioned Embree and EB not sure why u brought them up.

That's an old, old article by Brooks who is a slime ball trying to generate traffic for his personal gain. There's no story there. It's interesting that Notre Dame is digging this up again. They are tweeting this to death right now. There's no story and Cal cooperated fully with the NCAA over what was supplied to us for the 5K by Willie. We were cleared a long time ago and there was no wrongdoing. A better question is...why in the world would Notre Dame be so interested in bringing this up again? Hmmn....I wonder what has them so concerned about Cal right now?

I think you said..."nobody ever stops cheating." Thus, I assumed we would be included in your broad statement....thank you for the clarification that our program is clean!

Id have faith that our program is cleaner than most because of who is running it. If you think schools dont cheat, then God Bless ya. You shouldnt assume things and u know why im sure lol. Flukes, maybe nothing there but even giving street agents money is a bad idea. It's just asking for trouble unless you have the clout to make it go away.

Well....thanks for the blessing....I never said schools don't cheat....just looking for clarification as to whether you think we are cheating since you said everybody cheats....I suppose I wasted a bunch of time with that contemplation....

No I dont think we pay for recruits and our players actually know where the classes are that they are signed up for. I think every school breaks rules here and there, maybe even unknowingly, some of the rules are ridiculous. However, the big money cheating is elsewhere and you would find it easy if u think about it. I dont think Embree would allow it, dude has too much integrity. We are in good hands, hopefully it translates to the field as well.

Agree! And I have thought about it....

I personally know guys that had classes that they never attended, at least physically, and yet never missed a game and passed lol. It happens more than u think.

I agree but he was running a recruiting service before WE dropped him. He splintered off another legitimate company we used to deal with and we paid for his recruiting package (it was cheaper and he was the old contact we knew from the previous company). Nobody at Cal knew he was or would later start whoring players out to the highest bidder. We got data and it was verified by the media. That's why the story disappeared. No recruits from his list ever joined the Cal team. There are over 25 threads on this on my site but a few gems on Lyles including SC and TN involvement are here:

http://bearinsider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48060&highlight=lyles (SC and TN)

http://bearinsider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45486&highlight=lyles (Cal cleared of any wrongdoing)

I'm sure many people wished they never shook Sandusky's hand, attended social events with him or donated to his charity-doesn't make them pervs. Paying 5K for legit recruiting info doesn't make the Cal program a cheating one either. The reason this is coming up again is because Cal is pissing off the big boys in recruiting.

Sounds like this is similar to Henderson's reahash of CU's dirty laundry two or three years ago during a critical recruiting period.

If everyone is cheating we sure got the short end of the stick when hawkins was here.

Well its not a good idea to piss off the big boys either. Ive always thought it was funny that Texas slightly got mentioned in the SMU thing. SMU 1uped them and got the death penalty. Dont know how else to say money runs college football and the people with it call the shots. You better suck a few years before u start pulling guys from everywhere and winning. If not, u better have the history and clout to back it up. People are skeptical of Oregon for a reason.

Nothing Im saying has anything to do with CU, just things ive been around. Embree isnt like these type of people, they do exist unfortunately. Im happy with who we have.

The rules are bent everywhere. We have a MNC. Don't think it hasn't happened here. What pisses people off is when they do pay and they do not see a return on their investment (cough, cough ATM).

The biggest thing that makes you go "hmmm" is that Cal recruiting had fallen off in the 2008 and 2009 with classes ranked in the 30s and 40s. With no significant changes to the coaching staff and mediocre season records, all of the sudden Cal was back right around a top 10 class in 2010... the recruiting year these allegations center on.

I doubt the NCAA will do anything...they are pretty much harmless lapdogs to any school that brings in the dough...if there is a larger group of hypocrites outside of DC, I don't know who they are.

Well that and 330 million in facilities upgrades kicked off.

Coincidentally, we also managed to remove the hippie Berkeley tree sitters off the property who were affecting the stadium rennovations and Student Athlete High Performance Center construction. The newly named Simpson Center will be housing athletes from several dozen Olympic sports at Cal in addition to having one of the largest weight rooms and nicest locker rooms young football players have ever seen-all right under the stadium area. After years of recruiting with a only a artist's rendition drawing and a "someday promise" to show recruits, we actually had something tangible to offer. If Cal wasn't so accomodating to every protester with a grievance in the world, we would have had world class facilities and top recruiting classes years ago. Of course, I guess we simply would have been accused of cheating years ago too . Check out this girl:

You have an interesting taste in women, flukes.

Snow, I think Cal Memorial Stadium is due to be finished in time for the 2012 season.

It looks as though the designers expect heavy attendance from visiting fans for the UW game.

Good to know. Stadium alone does not explain the difference in recruiting. See: UW.
