Sirius Radio: Channel 106 (home broadcast)
Series vs. New Orleans: Privateers lead 1-0 (UNO, 67-65, Dec. 12, 2008 in Boulder).

QUICKLY: Colorado closes the non-conference portion of the schedule this season against New Orleans; last season the Buff s went 11-4 in non-conference play • CU opens conference play this Saturday against Utah and the first time in history will open conference play with three consecutive home games • Coach Boyle’s two-year CU record is 31-18 (.633); 23-3 at home (.885) • CU is 6-2 over their last eight games • Austin Dufault 105 career starts (third all-time) • CU has made at least one 3-pointer in 306-consecutive games dating back to the 2001-02 season • Carlon Brown (992 pts.) needs eight points to score 1,000 career points • Andre Roberson is in the top-5 nationally in rebounding (11.5).

KOA DEBUT: The CU men’s basketball team makes their debut on 850 KOA against New Orleans. Clear Channel Radio’s 850 KOA and AM 760 (KKZN), in conjunction with Learfield Sports and Buffalo Sports Properties, are expanding coverage of CU Basketball. KOA coverage will include most Pac-12 weekend games, along with an expanded pregame show, Buffs Warm-Up, will begin one-hour prior to tip-off. This season selected CU Men’s Basketball games will move to 850 KOA. KOA will begin its pregame coverage an hour prior to tip with Mark Johnson and Chris Lewis from the Coors Events Center beginning at 6 p.m.

FORMER BUFFS: To former Buff Cory Higgins (’11), who made the roster of the Charlotte Bobcats. Along with Alec Burks (’11) on the Utah Jazz and of course Chauncey Billups (’97) on the Los Angeles Clippers, that’s three Buffaloes on regular season NBA rosters for the first time since the 1992-93 season (Matt Bullard, Jay Humphries, Alex Stivrins).

SINGLE-DIGIT GAMES: The 1951-52 season was the last time CU opened the season with nine single-digit games in the first 11. In fact, that team started the season with 10 of the first 12 games in single-digits (3-9 record). For the season, CU played in 15 single-digit games, going 5-10 in those contests.

CLOSE GAMES: The Buff aloes are 3-2 over their last fi ve games and are averaging 63.0 ppg. compared to 61.8 by the opponent (+1.2). Excluding the 28-point home opener over Fort Lewis College, the Buffs average margin of wins/losses is even after 10 games. Average margin of six wins (not counting FLC) is 4.7 points (70.7-to-66.0); four losses is an average of seven points (68.8-to-61.8).

COUNTDOWN TO 1,000: Entering his final collegiate season, Carlon Brown has scored a team-high 138 points as a Buff (12.5 ppg.) giving him 992 career points. Brown scored 854 points in three years with Utah and in 109 career games played, he is averaging 9.1 ppg.

FRESHMAN SENSATION: Here’s a look at freshman guard Spencer Dinwiddie. He set a season-best 18 points against Texas Southern; fourth time this season being the team leader in points scored; led team in points for the fourth time in the past six games; sixth straight game in which he picked up at least 13 points. Against TSU: set a career-high for 3-pointers made (5) and attempted (6). He went 4-of-5 from beyond the arc in the first half. It only took him 6:09 into the game to accomplish this feat. His five 3-pointers are the most 3-pointers made in a game by a CU player this season. Nate Tomlinson hit four 3-pointers at Air Force; Shot 71.4 percent (5-of-7) from the field and 83.3 percent (5-of-6) from 3-point range, both season highs.

NEW ORLEANS: The Privateers played at North Texas on Tuesday bringing a six-game winning streak into Denton. UNO was 1-4 against Division I teams (losses to New Mexico, Rice, San Diego, Tulane) by an average of 28.3 points. UNO defeated Alcorn State at home (63-56). Junior forward Lovell Cook leads the team in scoring (13.3 ppg.), while senior forward Antonio Wertz is second in scoring (12.5 ppg.) and first in rebounding (8.7 rpg.). According to the NCAA - UNO will count as both a Division I and Division II counter during the 2011-2012 school year. Though all of UNO athletic teams will count as a Division I counter, contests against the Privateers will not count towards the Division I Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) in the sports where RPI is factored (i.e. volleyball, M/W basketball and baseball).

For those that skim these threads (and I don't blame you), the TL/DR version:
* Brown is 8 points away from 1,000 for his career
* The Mayor is awesome
* UNO counts as a D1 game this year, but doesn't factor in to RPI

Glad to see the games on 850. They will no be able to be heard in a much larger area.

In after missing the last two due to illness and weather.

The roads weren't too bad getting to the Texas Southern game.

I was still kinda sick, so I wanted another excise to justify not going.

since most of you were gone and I don't know if the Texas Southern game was on tv, here is a recap from what I can still remember from last week.

The game started out good for us for the most part, our starters were Nate, Brown, Dre, Spencer and Dufault. TS played the entire game in a zone defense and Spencer really lit them up from the outside and practically put TS away by himself in the 1st half. We were doing so well that Boyle emptied the entire bench (expect for Ski who was sick, Mills, Cain who has a concussion and the Beaus). TS looked really really bad in the 1st half, like bad high school team bad. They looked very athletic and quick, but they shot terrible and just made poor decision: dribble off the leg, travel, bad shot selection, you name it they did it. Well something clicked for them defensively and they did a half court trap on us. They would let us inbound but have 3 guys waiting near midcourt to trap the ball carrier. As I stated earlier Boyle was screaming at Nate to press up the court to beat their setup, but he rarely responded but we didn't have too much trouble in the 1st half with that trap.

Here is basically what their zone looked like:

3-2zone1.gif

Our zone offense consisted of 3 wing players, a high post and a low post, which is a new look for us I believe since we typically show a 4 wing, high post offense. We ran into two problem areas against their 3-2 trapping zone.

TRAP #1 - when who would swing the ball into the corners we would ALWAYS dribble parallel sideline so three guys would move to trap the ball. Player 1 would move to keep the ball carrier from dribbling toward mid-court, Player 3 would keep the ball carrier from moving to the basket and player 5 would trap the player from going to the baseline. We would consistently get ourselves stuck in this trap because guys would try to dribble around the zone instead of pass around it and if one guy is dribbling into a trap the other guys would just freeze instead of cutting through the open spots in the zone. We had a lot of turnovers in the 2nd half when they did this trap against us.

TRAP #2 - in this trap, once again we got fancy and tried to dribble the ball too much. Basically this trap they would try to trap us with the sideline and the midcourt line. This wasn't as effective since we were able to dribble around this trap a few times, but I think we still made a few turnovers here.

Since we played our 4 wing, high post or 3 wing high-low post offense, the high post was always open and TS did some really strange things on defense. I saw SHT play the high post a bit and if he got the ball, the defense player would just back off him and go defend the basket. SHT actually made a mid range jumper, but we don't have a player that can consistently hit that shot, so that play is essentially useless against the zone.

More and more teams are just going to throw the zone against us and as teams get better in the PAC:12 we are going to see some really bad scores since we just can't seem to execute our offense properly against it.

A few player notes:

Dinwidde: such a stud and carried the team in the 1st half, gave us a good cusion or else we might have lost the game. TS really figured out who to key in the 2nd half and we are sorely missing having another scoring threat or two on the team.

Nate: never prepared to shoot and if he misses his first shot I think he starts to over-think every shot he takes after that. I think I figured out what I don't like about him: He plays basketball like me. He knows what to do in every situation, but he doesn't have the athleticism to pull it off. I think he has a D-1 baskeball IQ, but D-3 basketball athleticism.

SHT: he actually scored four points in the 1st half on something like 2-3 shooting, but doesn't look smooth on offense, have no jump and keeps his hands way to rigid to receive a pass. For being 250 he was getting pushed around by a 220 lb player pretty easy. It may be bad footwork or position, but he gets moved pretty easy.

Dufault: not aggressive enough on offense and a total liability on defense. He loves to come out an chip the guards on a screen, but he seems to always lose his man when he needs to get back on defense.

Dre: I know he had 16 boards, but several times he tipped the ball to himself in the same position. He is great at grabbing boards, but he needs to get better at finishing around the basket.

Chen: He looked pretty awful out there. He seems to have a good game and then several bad games.

Brown: the worst thing is that he was so unforgettable for me again. I can't remember if he played good or bad.

Sharpe: where are you? what happened? I thought he was starting to turn a corner last year but he looks like he regressed both offensively and defensively. I think his knee is bothering him more than he is letting on.

Alright Buffs let's turn in a full 40 minute performance tonight. We lost to these guys in 2008 in Boulder. While they're in the process of moving down to DIII, they still are the caliber of a lowel level D1 opponent at the moment (for example, they've defeated Alcorn State this year). Let's win by 20+

Go Buffs

Anyone know why we're wearing black for a home game tonight? Is it a Blackout game or something (wouldn't think so since the students are out of town).
