Mikayla was recently named an All-American for the class of 2014 in the PeachStateHoops.com Elite Basketball Academy camp. They have a brief write-up of the camp as well.

From the sound of things, Mikayla is a serious top-level recruit for 2014 and would be a huge get for Coach Lappe. Carolina Scouting Report has her as the #25 recruit. Next Level has her as the #43 recruit right now. I've also heard that All-Star Girls Report has her as the #18 recruit.

Hopefully we can keep her home. That'd be huge.

I'm positive that Mikayla has an offer from CU, but haven't seen it "officially" on any of the major sites so I'm not listing it above yet. I also know that we're not the only offer she has. She is going to be one of the top recruits in her class and would be a HUGE get for the program. Lappe is positioning herself well on this one, but it's going to be a hard battle as pretty much every school in the nation is going to be going after her.

I like to hear that. Would love to see us get Mikayla....

This would be huge to get Mikayla, nice to see us back back in the conversation for recruits like this.

I love Ceal, but one thing I never quite understood about her was her lack of locking up CO HS bball players. CO is a great state for CO girls bball and soccer, yet we rarely land the top CO players in bball. Ceal had a top program at one point, yet we still weren't getting the girls up to Boulder. I hope Lappe changes this. We can be a very competitive team relying on CO talent.

I think Ceal's best teams and CU were always built around instate talent with out of state kids around them as well. Britt hartshorn, Jenny Roulier, Erin Sholz, etc. But near the end of her run she didn't land as many top kids. Lappe is determined to put a fence around the state for BCS kids and her confidence is attractive to prospects in state and out.

Just by little bits I'm hearing, I think that's one of Lappe's highest goals. And looking over the next two years, there are some phenomenal players that we need to keep in state. Next year we have Jacqueline Malcolm-Peck (who I like our odds with) and then in 2014 we have Mikayla, Diani Akigbogun and Ciera Morgan - all three of which are on the HoopGurlz watch list for that year already.

EDIT - and UDY beat me to the punch.

I agree with dyemeduke that you can definitely win big time with instate talent in wbb, soccer and volleyball.

No doubt (plus distance running and skiing).

In-state talent could also quickly form the foundation of a solid program in women's lacrosse if that's the next sport we add, as expected. Lots of great women athletes in Colorado.

HoopGurlz has an updated report on Mikayla:

EBA All American Camp-Sept. 11: With a talented cast of opposition, the camp was telling for Reese. It showed that while not the most athletic player in her class, she knows how to make plays. Her ball skill, shooting touch and court vision allowed her to compete with this high level cast. She's the ideal second perimeter scorer to a higher volume lead guard because she can make an impact with other parts of her game besides shooting the ball. The biggest challenge right now is keeping the explosive players in front of her on defense. She wants to apply pressure but learning what the appropriate cushion is and which players she can't overplay will help her greatly as she strives to play against the elites of the circuit. (Hansen)

I know CU is going after her hard, so here's hoping we can keep her home!

Mikayla will be making an unofficial visit to campus this weekend.

Mikayla was named an Honorable Mention All-American by the Sporting News, regardless of class. She is now a two-time Honorable Mention All-American, the first Coloradan to do that since Abby Waner and Carlie Needles. Other Coloradans on the Honorable Mention list are Hayley Blodgett of Golden, Ande Lampert of Boulder, Katie Heckman of Regis and Lauren Huggins of Heritage.

Coach Lappe has stated she will bring in kids or try to anyway bring in kids who will turn down top BCS schools to come to CU. She's on the right track and has a bead on the top kids not only in region but across the country.

OK, I was just able to get some info on Mikayla. The schools listed above are only the ones that I can confirm, but reportedly most of the Pac-12, Big 10 and Big 12 are looking around (if not offered already) along with national powers Baylor, Maryland, Notre Dame and Tennessee all showing some HEAVY interest.

The good news? CU is in a good position. It's a long battle, and it won't be easy, but they have been letting Mikayla know how important they consider her to the program and how much they want her to stay in state. Lappe & her staff have decided that they want to do what many coaches have attempted to do and close the borders. The difference is that with Lappe it's not just talk.

Mikayla could be a HUGE national recruit in 2014, and hopefully CU will be able to land her.

Lappe and staff continue to do a very nice job on the recruiting trail.

Mikayla would look good in black & gold.

Ceal's highest ranked teams in the early 90's had very little in state talent in the starting 5. Erin came along at the end of those teams. I think Hartshorn and Roulier were right after those teams. Ceal was unfortunately the victim of negative recruiting by the coach of the Colorado Hoopsters, Rick Lopez. Supposedly he told his players (Jamie Carey, Abby Waner, etc) not to go to CU. Lopez was later accused of sexual impropriety with some of his players and committed suicide before his trial.

I would love to see Mikalya as a Buff and I hope Lappe can land her.

IMO, with the kind of record CSU has this year, going there would be a big mistake.

Reese visits in-state
In previous recruiting classes, the talent pool in the state of Colorado has been thin at best. While the state typically produces one or two top 100 caliber players, there is a certain lack of depth in the state talent-wise. As a result, for a school like the University of Colorado, keeping the quality talent at home becomes paramount for a staff as they attempt to succeed on a national scale in a conference like the Pac-12.

This week Colorado made a step in this direction when they scored an unofficial visit from Mikayla Reese from Sand Creek (Colorado Springs, Colo.). Reese is one of the better prospects in the state of Colorado from the class of 2014 and keeping her home would be a big deal for one of the Pac-12's newest programs.
