Exactly what does Tomlinson do for this team to get 28 minutes a game?

He did play good defense tonight.

On offense, I'm all for having a veteran point guard who settles things down, gets others involved and gets the team into its sets.

Those things should be appreciated about his game.

But he's also got to make things happen.

1 assist and 1 turnover. Only took 3 shots (and missed them).

I think his lack of playmaking puts way too much pressure on our 2s to fill that role. Carlon and Ski combined for 9 turnovers. A lot of that is on Nate because those guys are forced to try to do some things that our PG is supposed to do and they are not playing to their strengths.

only 1 TO? funny how that stat worked for him. he was horrendous on the offensive side tonight.

w/ the lack of his playmaking, especially in the second half, i don't know why TB wouldn't try chen or sharpe at the point at around 14-10 minute mark, to let him rest, regroup and have the coaches... coach him.... god i'm twisted and pissed about this loss....

you're pissed (every buff fan should be, not trying to single you out)? Imagine being there. Just depressing to see them come out flat at the half and give up 2 straight possessions.

Do me a favor and pull Jorge Gutierrez's line from tonight and post it to this thread... he is the best PG in the conference, and Nate guarded him all night. He didn't do jack on offense admittedly, but that was one of the most impressive defensive performances I've ever seen, he had literally NO business shutting down Jorge like that... if Jorge doesn't struggle so much tonight, this game is much, much worse.

Jorge shot 2-17, only scored 5 points, but he also had 4 assists to 0 turnovers and 1 steal. One reason he took 17 shots is because he was always open. That is one hell of a defensive performance by Nate since he was able to leave the best PG in the PAC open all game and still cause him to miss all of those shots /sarcasm. Nate forced 0 turnovers and Jorge did what he wanted to do, besides make his shots.

EDIT: Also, was Jorge guarding Nate? He shut him down pretty easily.

What about nates offensive game?

Nate played pretty decent defense on Jorge but it also looked like Jorge was really pressing on his shots, he did miss a number of shots that on most nights would be points in the book.

The problem with the Nate on Jorge argument is that while Jorge didn't score a lot Nate's D allowed Jorge and the rest of Cal to get into their offensive rhythum in the second half. Chen plays a much more agressive style of D, gives up some things but also takes things away and makes teams uncomfortable. At some point early to mid second half Chen should have been in there for at least a stretch to see if he couldn't get the momentum turned around a bit

I wondered about the lack of Chen in the second half - was that Boyle feeling that he was too much of a liability in a locked down "D" game? Chen plays with energy and makes things happen, but that can cut both ways. Frankly I think it would have been worth throwing him in for a couple in the second half to try to get a spark....but hindsight always makes other options look better after a loss.

Tomlinson - 36 minutes - Team - 50 points - Team Shooting % - 31.9

I LOVE WHAT THIS MAN DOES FOR OUR OFFENSE. THE SPACING, THE RHYTHM, THE CALM.

Go rewatch the 2nd half... Nate comes out of the game, we are quickly down 5 points... Nate comes back in, we are quickly back up 2 points... you have tunnel vision at this point, the kid runs our offense 10x better than anyone else, and Ski/Booker were terrible last night on BOTH sides of the court. At least Nate showed up defensively.

Carlon Brown had 5 turnovers and was 3-10... he's our leader... yet we don't blame him at all? We had 2+ turnovers and shot 31%, Nate is directly responsible for 1 of those turnovers and 3 shot attempts... seems to me there is a lot of blame to pass around.

You and I both know that 1 TO stat was BS.

And Carlon does get some of the blame. But I don't want to hear about how great Nate is for our offense after that display.

totally agree w/ you... and here really was a perfect time (at the 15-10 minute marks in the second half) to see if Cain could affect their bigs....if you look at the stat line, jorge and crabbe were almost non existant in shooting, but thier 2 bigs saved the day... would have been interesting to see cain in for a 4-5 minute stretch w/ chen....imo

I was kinda pissed that I missed Cain coming in the game. I didn't even notice him. Is he any good?

It would be interesting to see this team without nate. Lets hope he gets hurt at practice.

It's all good. I also dont use the sarcasm font. I think it is stupid. I would never hope for one of our players to get hurt even if it benefits our discussion.

That's why that comment confused me, your not that big of an asshole.

My question still remains. If Tomlinson isn't getting the minutes then who should get them instead and what is the upside/downside of that change?

Ummmmmm, false.

U r impressed when someone throws up a bunch of bad shots like Jorge did and misses a lot? Let me tell u Nate had little to do with Jorge's bad offensive game
