Positions targeted for next year's class?

I'm guessing OL and LB will be big areas of focus for the staff in the next recruiting cycle. Assuming that we have around 18 scholarships available (that's the number I've heard a couple times), how would we likely look to fill out that class?

My best guess, based on nothing more than a gut feeling, is that we'd look to take about 4 OL, 3 LB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 2 S, 1 QB, 2 DL, and 2 randoms to be used to get somebody special who might fall into their laps.

Thoughts from the recruiting masterminds?

I think you've got the right track. Although we may take 5 OL and 4 LB's! I want to see some major speed on the offensive side of the ball too!

I was thinking only 1 RB, and 3 WR or 2 WR and 1 TE. I am guessing we red shirt Creer and Crowder this year and use Ford, Jones, Payne, Abron, Norgard, and Powell in the back field in 2012. Adding Creer, Crowder, and one other guy in 2013 will give the Buff's a pretty crowded backfield.

I think you're really close with the #'s sacky. Wouldn't surprise me to see them sign 2 LB and 3 DL; Embo seems to like those DT/DE types. And based on what they've done this cycle, they may take 2 CB's since they can be converted to S if needed.

As I see it... our D recruiting will be 60:40, front-seven:back-end. Our O recruiting will probably look like 70:30, OL/TE: All other skill positions. Teams are still going to try and take the lid off of our back-end. We need more assistance getting ball-hawking safeties.

Mosley and Harrington could be those ball hawking types. Watching both of their films, you'll see that they love to hit too. Hall may also play safety and you can add his speed into that mix as well as the guys we took last year. I think our depth all over the DB positions will look good soon.

We may sign 1 safety next year at most. It's going to be all LB's on the D. Lot's of OL and play makers. And the QB may be more of the dual threat by the looks of who they're offering.

The number of OL they target is going to be highly dependent on how many of this years DL recruits end up on that side of the ball. The staff has expressed on more than one occasion (and shown us once so far) a willingness/proclivity for moving guys from the DL to the OL. I would not be surprised if at least one of this year's recruits moves as well.

Sacky, I think you are pretty close as well but it is hard to tell at this point. A lot will depend on injuries at certain positions that may put a kid a year back on the clock or that may put a kid out of contention for playing. We will have to see how our injured RBs respond. Another big issue would be if a kid or kids at certain positions just show that they likely don't have it to play significantly at this level.

On the other hand certain positions may be influenced by guys changing positions. If some of this years DL recruits move to LB or OL that could impact those areas. Also if we have DBs who successfully move to safety, if not we take at least a couple there.

Lastly it depends on the quality of the players we get interested in coming. It seems that Embree is less tied into filling certain positions that he is in getting the best quality athletes and football players and finding a way to get them into the line-up. If we run into a bunch of big, fast guys who are players who happen to be DL we could see another bunch like this year instead of recruiting a marginal kid who happens to play OL in HS.

We only graduate 1 OL. As much as I would like to see 4 or 5 in the next class, it wouldn't surprise me if it was 3 again (assuming a class size under 20).

Speed.

I also see us going after another TE. Embree is going to be after a great TE every year.

Yep. I could see 4, but 5 would really surprise me.

OL is one of those positions that needs a year or two to learn the system, IMO. Based on that, it's not so much how many we graduate next year, but the year after that that is the concern. And in any event, I said I thought we'd take 4, so that's pretty much in line with what you guys are saying.

Ditto to that Sacky. What remains to be seen is how deep are all those positions at a 4 star minimum by November of next year?

As an estimate, I agree with your numbers Sackman. I could see them taking a kicker and even a fourth LB.

I think we will go for at least 2 Safety prospects. Given the fact that we play teams like Stanford, Washington who like to bang, our DB's aren't built to take on pulling lineman and fullback. I see signing guys 6'2+ and 210lb+.

I don't think we have enough speed at the LB position to take on the spread offenses. During the press conference, Embree said in essence, he didn't expect any safeties to move to LB.

The Pac-12 is such a strange conference with the eclectic mix of offenses. It really requires a great deal of flexibility, in scheme, personnel, and coaching.

I am not going to throw out number but CU will bring in at least one QB every class. They are going to try to get some more OL depth next year. Linebacker will be a priority. But the number one priority will be a big time RB.

No disrespect intended, but there is no way we will have 18 scholarships to award next year. We have 84 total kids on scholarship right now. We only have 10 scholarship seniors. That leaves 11 spots open. I believe that extra one will go back to Vincent if he can get back in, putting us at 85.

We just signed 28, 26 will apply to this years class if everyone makes it in which means that someone else will have to grayshirt. We can only have 25 per class.

Now usually we have 2-3 players leave the team. To get to 18, we would have to have 8 leave and I don't see that happening. I'm estimating that we will have between 11-14 players sign LOI's next year. Maybe we get to 15.

If you want to know what are priorities are for next year, look at who we have offered so far.

Usually 6 to 8 players leave every year for a variety of reasons - injuries, grades, lost of interest, other trouble, transfers. I think CU will be 15 plus openings.
