On The Futures board, I see a lot of kids with CU offers and many with no offer. So, my question is, "How does this work?" Do we offer every kid we like? Or do we send letters of interest and only offer to kids who reply that they are seriously interested?

Are you asking about how the AB database works or are you asking about how CU decides on offers?

The latter. I mean, we can't just offer everyone. I wouldn't offer unless there were interest.

Part of the coaches job is to get kids interested. If we only offered kids who showed real interest right off the bat, we would have issues.

The coaches choose who to offer in any number of ways. Mostly, it comes down to evaluation in person or watching film, either watching it at the high school with the coach or watching highlights shipped to Boulder. We also may have a previous relationship with the school and are alerted to prospects by that school's coaching staff. High school coaches in a particular area also will tell the coaching staff about players at other schools as well. Then there is the spring evaluation period where we actually get to watch/talk to players in person.

I'd add to what BB said by differentiating a year like 2013 when we have a small class to a year like 2012 when we were bringing in a 25+ class.

With a larger class, you're looking at a number of positions where you are looking to bring in 3 or more guys. In order to pull that off, you need to offer your "Plan B" guys early. Success rates on guys we offer is going to be under 20% and we can't afford to sit around hoping that we bat 1.000 on the Plan A guys we offer. We also have the flexibility to offer some developmental players that have high character and upside but may not be ready to contribute for a few years. This flexibility exists because we have 1 or 2 guys in the class at that position who are expected to be ready to play early.

With a small class, many positions are going to be limited to accepting only 1 commitment. Given that, we may only offer 5 or 6 guys at a position and those would be the top guys on our board. First to commit gets the spot and then we move on unless one of the others is so good we're willing to use up a "best player available regardless of position" spot on him. There's not really room to take developmental guys or early commitments from Plan B types who we would otherwise generally be happy to have as part of a recruiting class. On this note, the biggest sign to me that Neuheisel was in serious trouble heading into last season was that he was accepting Plan Bs during the summer despite looking at a class size of 14.

For me it was the inability to show up against USC, being despised by alumni and his, now infamous, cabo vacation in the offseason when he should have been solidifying his staff.

Thanks guys. It can get pretty complex, it seems, if you have a couple of highly ranked guys holding out to the end. Listening to Embree's post LOI day presser, it sounds like he has a good recruiting philosophy and plan in place. He came across as very comfortable with the process.
