If you were Larry Scott, what would you do to the Pac-12?

Here is what I would do if I was the man:

Add more sports for sure.

CU recently announced that they would be adding women's lacrosse and the Pac-12 is one school away from being able to sponsor that sport unless you want it to stay in the MPSF. It is one of the fastest growing sports out there. We should bring in men's teams as well. That would mean football stadiums that are not used during the spring would get some use and that means $$$.

Women's rugby is another fast growing sport as well according to USA Rugby which is headquartered in Boulder which is where one Pac-12 school is located.

I watched youtube clips of rugby sevens this morning and couldn't help but think about how that sport is about to explode in popularity. It's getting so hot that it will be an olympic sport in 2016. I believe there is a women's version of the rugby sevens. I think this conference needs to get serious about rugby and that would be music to the ears of Cal fans who has the best college rugby program out there in the USA.

Again, another use for those football stadiums during the course of the year. Some of those schools might be able to use nearby MLS venues instead of the football stadiums.

I believe that men's soccer needs to be at every Pac-12 school because I'm sure someday it might be the most popular sport in the USA especially if latinos end up becoming the biggest ethnic group by like 2050. Just imagine UO and OSU squaring off in Portland at where the MLS Portland Timbers play at. I think the sport futsal would be very popular as well.

If that happens, I'm sure Larry Scott will be talking about a second channel for the nation/regions.

CU-Arizona rugby:

I'm kind of dumbfounded why rugby isn't as popular as football in this country.

Move to the UK....rugby will be right up your alley. Otherwise, you are living in a fantasy land.

**** all that nonsense. If ima Larry I do whatever it takes to make the 12pac the best football conference.

In response to the OP. Lacrosse could be played on our practice fields, but not at folsom. The field surface is too narrow for a regulation lacrosse field

Sidelines need to be wider for football than lacrosse, though. I'm pretty sure there's room. A football field is 53 1/3 yards wide and a lacrosse field is 60 yards wide. I would be that there are 3 yards on each side of the field that could be used for lacrosse. Heck, the restraining line the bench players and coaches need to stay behind is 2 yards off the field.

Sad that you blokes diss a sport whose national headquarter is in Boulder. CU's own rugby team plays in polos and shorts with snow nearby...in Feburary or March.

Ive heard from lacrosse folks that there isnt enough room for the field, and the "benches" on each side. The field is very narrow at folsom

From experience, I've seen multiple lacrosse games played at college football stadiums before (UVA's Scott Stadium and UMD's Byrd Stadium) and the Lacrosse Final 4 is often played at the Baltimore Ravens' M&T Bank Stadium and the Gaints/Jets MetLife Stadium. Pretty sure there would be room in Folsom for lacrosse.

Would not fit.

Folsom has maybe two yards of grass on the boundaries. The rest is concrete.

Those stadiums were built from the ground up to be football stadiums, and have ample room along the perimiter. Because Folsom was retrofitted to add more seats in 1967, and the field was lowered when they removed the track. I am pretty sure folsom meets the minimum restrictions for an NCAA regulation football field, barely.

Shldr2Shldr,

That would be too bad about rugby, soccer, and lacrosse at Folsom Field. That would have been awesome if it could be done. I guess that means those sports would have to be played at Prentup Field.

Hockey before EVERYTHING.

We have good teams in the region, so it shouldn't be hard finding games. And I'd much rather have hockey than all of the baseball talk that always comes up. Makes a lot more sense for the region.

Well nik, pulled up an interesting article. They have played lacrosse at folsom field before. I am not quite sure how, since it appears there is not enough grass, but it has been done. What that means for the future, I dont know.

Very true...I'd love to see CU have hockey down the road but the issue will be start up costs. I'm seeing rugby as a good spring sport and given that it is similar to football, I'm thinking why not have rugby during the football offseason?

If people will spend 10 minutes watching rugby, one should be dumbfounded in how it is not popular in this country and football came from rugby.

Oh, I'm with you on rugby. I think it'd be great. I just don't understand why everyone ignores hockey and instead brings up baseball.

I'm with you about baseball...I'd take hockey over baseball too.

And for anyone who doesn't think rugby can go into Folsom Field, Wikipedia has this:

I'm sure the local businesses would be very supportive of rugby at CU if it was to become big or if Boulder was to get a rugby franchise for a professional rugby league.

Nash,

Good to have a fellow rugby lover on board.

I don't think rugby could fit in Folsom, particularly not 15s. The field is wider than a football field and it would probably be better off being played where soccer is played, as is common in the UK and France. Technically there are only minimum and maximum playing dimensions to the field, but 15s looks terrible if it is played on a field that is significantly less wide than the maximum. 7s you can get away with because there is already so much space though. So maybe you play 15s games over where soccer plays and you could hold a Pac 12 7s tournament at Folsom.

I also agree wholeheartedly with your dumbfoundedness about rugby's lack of popularity in this country but I ultimately think it's because it's a game with complex rules and gets little air time on TV. This is changing and the sport has grown tremendously in the 9 years I've been following and playing it. It has a bright future in this country and it's great to see. I went to the USA 7s in Vegas and there were 30,000 people there on the Saturday and it was just an amazing vibe. Get out there for it next year if you get the chance.

Hockey start up costs wouldn't be as bad as is being predicted. They could play at the Broomfield center, which means no new facilities costs. I'd be first in line for season tickets.

Of course, the issue is that we're adding sports that aren't officially sanctioned Pac 12 sports. That wouldn't sit too well with the folks in Walnut Creek.

I'm not convinced that is an issue. Bohn has stated that it's not really a consideration.

It's only an issue if there's a problem with televising those games on the Pac 12 network. If we're part of some other affiliation for hockey, but allow the Pac 12 network to televise the games, I think it's all good. If not, I would be surprised if there isn't some resistance from the conference. They don't want us using their big fat network checks to participate in sports that they can't televise.

If they ever actually get the NW rail line completed, it would provide a very nice connection between Boulder and the Broomfield event center.

Just sayin'.
