Chance Andre Leaves after his Junior year for the NBA.

I have been looking at the 2013 NBA mock draft on NBADRAFT.NET and keep seeing Andre go up and down in the Lottery. I hope he stays until his senior year, but what are the chances he takes the chances of becoming our next lottery pick. Also if he does so, would the outcome ultimately hurt or help our recruiting/team in the following year. It would open up a second scholarship for next year, maybe helping us to not only sign a PG/SG such as Hamilton but also a postman such as Torren Jones. Just seeing what your thoughts were.

It would absolutely hurt the team. Not very many people can get to the ball like Dre, the rebounding and blocks he brings to this team are priceless. IMO even if we got a top 50 scorer we wouldn't be better off.
 
One thing that I think we are going to have to start getting used to around here is that, the type of guys boyle is bringing in are talented. very talented. I dont think we have any one and done guys yet but it could be that way. We have got to start learning how this reload thing works with our basketball team. Tad is not just building a strong program, if it keeps up this way, we will be a great program before too long. The way fan support is exploding, AD support is exploding, attention is exploding, CU admin is backing this finally as well, and the amount of talent on our roster is about to jump to a level we may have only seen once in the history of this program. Get used to people leaving early. Get used to the heartache and the what if's when it happens, but be ready to embrace and be excited for the talent that will be coming the next season.

This is going to be fun to learn.


I just wish we had a baseball team to take away some of the anxiety that lasts from april until august without anyother sports going on
 
As long as current rules stay the way they are, people leaving early is something we'll have to deal with.

Andre's been projected as a early lottery pick for at least a year now, (I've seen him as high as #3 at one point), I can't imagine he'll stay after next year.
 
I think there's a really good chance he'll be gone after next year. And that will hurt the 2013 team without an immediate lift to recruiting. Unfortunately, by the time early entries declare, it's well into the spring and most of the top talent has already signed. I'll guarantee the staff is already preparing for him to leave, though, so they'll be ready if/when it happens.
 
I hope for both the Buffs and Andre's sake he stays the extra year. He is certainly a gifted athlete who would be interesting to the league as a rebounder and a guy who can defend the 3, including the more physical 3's that you see on the pro level.

On the other side as good as he is at certain elements of the game Andre is far from ready offensively. An extra year with quality coaching and playing at the college level could let him develop an offensive game that would take him from a role player in the NBA to a potential starter. He simply doesn't have the offensive game right now to be a full-time player in the pros.

As much as I would like him to stick around it is hard to pass up the money that the NBA offers. I also look at Andre's deficiencies and see player in the NBA who have more glaring weaknesses than he does. Makes for a tough choice on his part.

If he leaves he will be missed. We have recruits coming in that are superior to what we have been used to around here for past years but Dre' is a special player. His intensity as a rebounder along with his overall athleticism make him a game changer. We can project recruits but Andre has shown it and been the difference in a number of games for us.
 
I'm sure that the feedback from NBA scouts is that he needs to develop a more consistent offensive game. If that happens next year, I'd expect him to go get paid. As long as the player is a lottery pick I agree with the decision to leave early.
 
Not until he can develop an outside shot/offensive game besides layups. Until then he'll be a shorter Chris Anderson imo
 
Just dreaming a bit, but has CU ever had four players in the NBA at the same time?
 
Either way, I'd be surprised if Cory Higgins remains on an NBA roster after this season. Charlotte is terrible and I'm guessing his pops gets fired (4-28 this year)
 
If he has a chance to be a lottery pick he has to jump ship, I get the value of a college education and being a kid, but staying an extra year for the love of being in college doesn't do much for you if you blow out your knee and kill your earning potential.

All that being said, his offensive game needs to dramatically improve. He needs to be able to create his own shot and and get a more consistent jumper. I am a huge fan of Dre, but Alec was picked 12th, not sure if I see Dre in that same caliber without a big jump in his offensive game.
 
Dre might also be seen as to much of a tweener, a power forward game locked in a small forward body. He doesn't play well enough away from the basket and is much smaller than the guys he will be competing against in the paint.

In some ways he is a smaller Kenneth Faried who was a bigger, better rebounder in college and has still had some adjustment issues in the pros.
 
So he has things to work on as do a lot of players. Would the college game help him or would playing in the developmental NBA league be a better fit? You play more games in the developmental league than in college bball, but it definitely isn't as fun and no one watches it anyway.

When you are a good player it's difficult to say. If he's a guaranteed lottery pick he has to go.

I think he will make it to that point...isn't he the ONLY Pac-12 player to be averaging a double double during conference play? If he can add four to six more points per game in addition to maintaining his rebounding edge, he's as good as gone after next season. Just four to six more points would do the trick.

He doesn't HAVE to go. No one has to go. I bet there is a part of Burks that wishes he was still at CU this year.

And millions of parts that are happy with his decision.

If someone had wanted to pay me $4.3 million for 2 years of work, I wouldn't have chosen college instead.

Me neither. But my point is that he doesn't HAVE to go. People have stuck around it has worked out for them.

and they have also stuck around and watched their stock fall (Sullinger, Perry) or they can get hurt. But yeah some guys stick around for another year and work on their game and help their draft chances, but those are guys that move up from a 2nd round pick to a lottery pick, not moving from a lottery pick to being a higher lottery pick.

I hope he stays for four years, but it is pretty hard to pass up on being a lottery pick.

This. He has a LOT of work he has to do on his offensive game. And NBA GM's that draft in the lottery are usually in the lottery for a reason and don't use those picks on players that provide defense & rebounding. They need the flash of a potential 20 ppg scorer -- which Dre isn't.

I do have a good paying job myself thanks to my college education but passing up million of dollars just to stay in school? If I did that and missed out on that, I'd be the biggest idiot in the world. You do not pass up $5 million...that's nearly 20 years of good paying work in just one year.

still only one post? you just come in here and try to freak everyone out and that's it? don't steal my thunder, Hawaii
 
i have to disagree with what a lot of people are saying. GM that are drafting in the lottery, and more so even in the top 5-10 picks, will draft on potential first and foremost and secondly based on stats. There is a reason why no senior has been drafted no 1 overall since Kenyon Martin. NBA franchises would rather take a young player with potential and develop him for 2-3 years than have him stay in college and refine his game and come out at 22-23 years old.

Also Goose i have to disagree with your statement about the lottery GM's looking only for 20 ppg potential. I will agree that is the case with SG and SF that are drafted in the top 5. It can be debated about where Andre will play at the next level but I think he'll be an SF/PF tweener and if projections hold true will be drafted in the late lottery. Looking at past few lottery drafts, we had Biyombo drafted with no offensive game, Kawhi Leonard at 15 last year ( i think Dre could be the next Kawhi, double double player), Tristan Thompson and Morris twins no threat to ever average 20, Favors and Udoh(rebounding and defense), Cousins could be 20ppg, and the list goes on and includes Aldrich who might not even play.

I think Andre's has serious skills and potential and he would be wise to go if he was given a lottery grade. Every team needs rebounders and hustle players and he could carve out a nice niche for himself even if he doesnt ever develop a great offensive game
