Pre-Spring Depth Chart

Man, talk about ugly. We are a couple good classes away (not including 2012) from having the depth chart of a decent to good BCS team. Hopefully there is some healthy attrition after the spring because there are some guys buried on this depth chart (before true freshmen report), which means they will never make an impact here.

Spring is going to be limited no doubt about that, will be shocked if they even go full pads for more than 2 practice all spring.

Damn, Prich needs to add weight. 170lbs at 6'1"? Really? Guy needs to add 15-20lbs to his frame.

I guess I understand the reasoning behind having Harrington running 2nd behind Moten, but I'll be really shocked if the season opens up like that. Isn't it pretty well understood that Moten will likely be moved to Safety once Fall camp begins?

It wouldn't be a huge surprise if both of them moved. We really need either Crawley or Wright to hit the ground running and duplicate or better Hendo's performance from last year.

After looking at that my takes:

Jarrod Darden as 4th string WR - major disapointment so far. Hope he picks it up.

Dannewitz at RG?? - I am a bit surpised by this. i hope it works. I though harris might slide inside and Mustoe/Nembot would battle for RT. I know the coaches also talked about moving Bahktiari to LG and Lewis up to LT, which I would guys might move Munyer to RG. Anyway it looks like the line is a work in progress as they tinker to see where players end up.

God I hope Kasa works out at TE. It would be great knowing Wood could have a 6' 7" target roaming the middle of the field as an outlet. It would also be sweet to see Nembot in as a double TE on goal line with Kasa.

Kirk Poston as a 3rd string DE? I know we signed him as DT and that hasn't worked, but he is now 3rd string on the end behind a walk-on freshman.

DT is scary thin. If one guy goes down EB might have to put on pads and fill a spot on the line. I hope Richter has been doing some sort of yoga to become a bit more flexable. If not it's the Will "light my fire" Pericak show until the freshmen show up.

I would kind of like to see all the SAM linebackers on the field at the same time. I now kinda see why LB wan't the most important position in the last recruiting class given all of the other gaping holes, but we will need to add a few this year.

I may be the only one, and it may be due to the fact I am thinking of the depth chart against Oregon and Stanford, but I am OK with the DB depth chart. Having Smith backing up Polk is nice, and Orms/Vigo helping at safety will be good as well. Having Harrington push Moten will only help, and we still have Bell coming back. That doesn't factor in the freshmen either.

Hey, I just saw that O'neil can kick with both his right and left leg. I never knew that.

Did you mean Dannewitz at RG? Not surprising to me at all that he is being moved inside. He is not a tackle at the college level.

The OL gets better in a hurry if Harris can stay healthy. Mustoe is a guy who needs at least another year (probably two) in the program before he is ready to be a full-time starter. Nembot is probably a year away as well.

You can't bury a scoop like that in small font....

Looking at the depth chart we desperately need Bonsu and Rippy back healthy in the fall. A healthy Bell would help as well although we have more talent there.

We recruited a lot of DL but expecting true FR to compete on the D-line would mean we are in trouble, we are also thin at ILB.

Lots of guys on that chart who have 2 or more years remainding who look like they may never make a tangible contribution. Do we see a bunch of attrition coming up.

When you graduate that many seniors and can't recruit JUCOs, you're going to be young and have holes in the spring.

It's really not that bad, though. Looks worse than it is since Bell, Bonsu, Creer, Hirschman and Rippy aren't participating.

Great opportunity to build depth and confidence for some guys. Hopefully Moten can develop this spring along with Daigh. Maybe it gives Richter the opportunity to become a productive member of the DT rotation. Kasa and Slavin need the reps, as do all the guys battling out at X. Tony Jones needs to establish himself and make someone earn carrier from him in the fall. Wood needs to prove that he's capable of leading the offense and getting us Ws.

Maybe I'm not reacting as much since I follow it so ridiculously closely, but it is what I thought it was. We just need to establish a good sense of which guys can be counted on to be in the rotations this fall and find out who the playmakers and leaders are. Then, fall camp is where we've got to hope that players we think of as "fillers" and rotation guys from the spring can get their jobs taken by our injured guys and true freshmen.

We've got the makings of a team. Potential playmakers at every level. Just have to have a lot come together to find 22 quality starters and a reliable 3-deep.

We need a Juco transfer at DT for fall camp. We have no depth at DT, even Pericak is questionable with is off the field antics, trying to set trash cans on fire. Bonsu is oka, nothing special, We have nothing at DT, we are in a state of emergency.

We should just put an advertisement out to all the students, see if we can get a fat guy to sign up

By fall we will have 4 more DT's (hopefully) in practice

I agree that the outlook at DT is not rosy, but the solution is not to reach for a JUCO late in the process. We will take some lumps there in 2012, although Bonsu staying healthy would be huge. Take our lumps this season and sign two more in the 2013 class and suddenly the depth chart looks pretty young, but talented.

Asking for a couple freshmen to step up isn't that much of a stretch. Hypolite came in as a low 3* fullback without any other offers and made a huge impact as a true frosh. Cunningham, as a much more highly regarded 3*, solidified a good veteran group at DT by playing over 100 snaps as a frosh. With Pericak a solid starter, I think we can find another starter or at least a couple 100+ snap guys out of this big freshman class. I think it's going to be a group we can win with. Richter gaining flexibility & learning to stay on the balls of his feet + Bonsu getting healthy could actually give us an average Pac-12 line when it's all said and done. With our LBs and DBs expected to be at least average, we could have a pretty solid defense.

Edit: I used the Hypolite and Cunningham examples because we're not even talking about guys who ended up being NFL draft picks, so I didn't think it was much of a stretch.

I feel okay about the DL if Pericak and Bonsu stay healthy because I agree it is not a stretch for a couple true freshmen to make an impact. The defense actually looks okay in that scenario.

We have to look at every option available, Bonsu will have to raise his game when he comes back.Pericak faces possible suspension, he is also questionable against the run. A bowl game will be huge with recruiting. If we can get a 5th year DT or a stud Juco DT or a transfer that can play right away, we should do it. We are in state of emergency, we are not okay at DT even with Pericak and Bonsu, in my opinion.

lol - Where are we going to find a stud Juco at this stage?

oh - Sweet - I was worried you were asking something unreasonable

The problem is those DTs are not out there at this time of year. Unfortunately, we are paying the price for Edward Nuckols not making it in and then neither Poole nor Poston being able to do anything in the next class. We are going to have to build back up depth over 2-3 classes.
