This year, they had a good FB team and the Heisman winner.
BB is top-notch: men and women's
I think they have other succesful teams
And all this is happening in Waco

Seriously, how can this be? are they paying people off? is it an excellent academic school?

within 3 years, we should be kicking thier ass in FB and BB

They cheat.... at least in basketball. If it isn't outright cheating, they operate very deep in the 'gray' area of college recruiting

I don't want to make accusations.

I'll just say that they don't have as good tradition in any of these sports as other Big 12 programs, they hadn't had as much recent success in any of these sports as other Big 12 programs, and they don't have nearly as good facilities or fan support as other programs in the Big 12.

Draw your own conclusions.

Clearly it is simply Gods will that they win....

They took a chance on hiring coaches who were on the verge of making huge names for themselves and became an alternative choice for recruits in a 200-mile radius of talent rich areas to go and be somebody instead of get buried on the depth chart somewhere else. And these gambles started working out, and now they're becoming every bit in the conversation for more elite players as the schools they were previously just getting castoffs from.

So I think the coaching is getting overlooked because everyone who's not Baylor is explaining it with "cheating." But I also think by the end of this decade we'll know a lot more about what's been going on at those programs there, and a lot of it's not gonna be good.

Which is quite a statement, considering the decade they just had.

Roughly 9 years ago Baylor was synonymous with Dave Bliss, Patrick Dennehy, awful football and a couple of immature baseball players who I think found a stray cat and skinned it. Really a mess of an athletic department.

Fast forward to today when the big 3 programs on campus have all risen to national prominence at least for the time being. All with great coaches who can recruit, but like any programs showing a metoric rise to success something's bound to come out from a former player or booster about some Josh Luchs-type stuff, maybe not a whole lot that gets real due process but the school will start to self-report and the media will start slapping asterisks on seasons and we'll all be left saying "Oh, that's how they did it." I don't think Baylor's a true Death Penalty headcase waiting to be unraveled, but like Billy Donovan when the rumors of cheating follow you around for as long as they have, you can't help but sit and wait for everything you've heard rumored about Scott Drew to come to light in an official capacity.

I like the 2009 class at Baylor

And even better judgment would be not to even mention that you were considering to say something racially. I mean, why mention that?? That makes you (and the rest of us) look bad, okay?

Quit being a McAsshole and get the **** off my case for everything.

It's a Devil's bargain. What WOULD Baylor offer to Louis Cypher in exchange for glory? This was my first inclination.

But it's not rational. Simple case of freemarket working better than socialism.

Baylor is a private school with leadership who are highly motivated to build a top tier athletic department.

As a private school, Baylor is not beholden to voters and socialistic state regulatory red tape.

They are free from AAU certification. They are held in check by the Baptist convention, which hardly has the same dogma as the Catholics. In short, Baylor is more adept at turning on a dime than their state affiliated bretheren.
Do you want to hike tuition? NO problem. Kenneth Starr asks regent Buddy Jones. Is Buddy Jones going to say no?

There is not some cumbersome legislative process with state caps mandated on the percent increase in tuition, or percent out of state students, or percent funding to be contributed by the state. On the contrary, Baylor does not answer to the state, but oddly enough, has alumni who pull the strings in Austin, while being out of the state's jurisdiction.

As a private institution in Texas, with a long relationship of being in UT'S shadow, there is an understanding by Baylor alumni that donations are expected, and come with the diploma.

A Baylor grad is much more likely to give back to the school, as it's just part of their culture. It doesn't hurt that the religious half of the alumni base come from a tradition of giving, and the legal alumni who reside in law firms and courtroom chambers across Texas have the means to donate. Baylor has made a priority of building a $1B foundation endowment over the past decade.

In Colorado, by comparison, the instate alums may percieve donations are not necessary because it's covered by tax dollars, and nobody wants to pay the government more than the bare minimum. The out of state alumni feel cheated by CU for subsidizing the instate peers. All the while, Bruce Benson is handcuffed by political forces, and is not comfortable declaring that NCAA championships are a priority. This is not the case in Waco.

It also doesn't hurt that Baylor is in a recruiting hot bed. It's just down the road from Houston, DFW, and Austin/San Antonio. Kids can get a scholarship worth $25,000+ per year (vs the instate $12,000 at state schools) and you pitch to the parents about the safe religious based environment far from the outrageous decadence and excess found in the big city. Sold.

An other example of a private school doing exceedingly well athletically amidst these tough economic times is Stanford.

Back on topic. Baylor's had a nice few years, but nothing more. It happens.

Remember when ****ing Kansas went 12-1 in football? :wow: Where's that football/basketball juggernaut now?

Baylor will fade to the middle of the Big 12 in football now that RGIII is gone. They've never won a Big 12 Championship in football or men's basketball and I don't see one in the near future.

They still suck

What's with all this Baylor envy from many of you lately?

I didn't think Colorado fans would stoop to that.

Baylor is Baylor, that's all there is to say!
