Embree - "The Process"

I have heard Embree talk about "the process" for a year now and just kind of blew it off as "coach talk" after hearing all of Hawkins talk over the years. But I just finished reading the book The Extra 2%: How Wall Street Strategies Took a Major League Baseball Team from Worst to First.

Embree was on 104.3 the Fan this morning talking with Klatt and Evans and he mentioned "The Process" a couple of times. After reading the book it makes me feel a lot better about Embree, the Tampa Bay Rays(who the book chronicled) had a process that they developed, trusted and deployed. There were down times and bumps in the road but they believed in their process and didn't deviate from it at the first signs of hard times.

As fans it is easy and what we do best to freak out at the first sign of things going wrong, but it is nice to have a HC that has a plan, believes in it and is going to try to execute it to the best of his ability even when things don't go exactly as planned. You just have to trust the process........

It takes confidence and leadership to do this. It's the right approach.

As opposed to, say, changing your offense every year.

fify

It would have been an improvement if the coach who shall be unnamed had actually had a plan he stuck with for one year much less an extended time.

Seemingly the only plan he had was to try to justify playing his son at QB and making opposing coaches look like geniuses.

and also what the **** is wrong with Klatt? The guy used to be well-spoken, humble, and intelligent. Now he comes across as an arrogant fool on the radio. His go-to argument is that the other person doesn't know as much about football as he does.

so what is the process?

That is obviously the million dollar question. But I have heard him say that this year they are actually getting to coach this spring rather than having to teach intensity, attitude and the "proper" way to do things. So maybe step 1 was setting the proper tone for the program.

Very good point. I can be more patient as long as I don't see the "lets throw **** against the wall and hope for the best" approach. Embree got the job because he had such a great vision for where he wants the team to go, and already had a plan in place. I think that as long as he doesn't panic, we will be fine.

Really? I thought he got the job because he was cheap at a time when we had no money.

A reasonable assumption of "The Process" for CU football:

1. Changing the culture. This involves raising the expectations for practice, academics, and play on the field. We saw a lot of this last spring and into the fall. The intensity at practices was increased, the intensity in pregame and post-game speeches was increased, and the intensity on the sidelines was increased. The anger in the post-game press conferences was palpable. Essentially, the message sent was, "The last five years have been unacceptable. This coaching staff will not compromise our standards, you will need to rise to meet them." Probably the most notable example was the suspensions in the middle of the 2011 season. It hurt the team on the field in the short-term, but it also showed the team that there are no compromises, no matter the situation. Another important part of this process is to cultivate an atmosphere that allows player leadership to thrive. True player leadership emerges, it is not just authority or titles granted by the coaches. The overall process continues with the bluntness you hear from Embree on a regular basis.

2. Improving the overall talent level. The first part of this is setting out an overall recruiting blueprint. It is clear that the coaches are focusing on the PAC-12 footprint, Texas, and Washington D.C. (which basically happened by accident). This starts with going into the schools that the assistants have existing relationships with and figuring out which players are BCS quality. Most coaches will also give the coaches a heads up on players from opposing schools that are worth a look. This is a long process, but is vital to overall recruiting success. Sure, you might see some offers pop up outside of the footprint, but those offers are the exceptions. Another important piece of this is making early recruiting a priority. This includes making Junior Day a priority and pushing for early commitments. You are likely to lose a couple early commitments, but that can be offset by flipping players from other teams. The final piece to this puzzle is to have a clear understanding of what the recruiting board looks like. Not every offer is equal and not every offer is good through signing day. A CU offer has to mean something to recruits, it has to be special. Most importantly, thoroughly vet the character of each and every recruit that could be signed. Chemistry is always an important piece of winning football teams and it is hard to get it back once it is gone. Kids obviously grow up when they go off to college, but taking lots of character risks every year eventually catches up to you.

3. Winning on the field. This is not saying winning only matters after a couple years. It is saying that consistent winning may or may not happen overnight. If it does not happen right away, you do not veer from the plan. There needs to be a clear offensive and defensive scheme in place that is adaptable enough to fit players on the current roster. This also does not mean that changes are a bad thing. Roster turnover and assistant coach turnover cannot be avoided in college football. Evaluation is a constant and ongoing process. The players and coaches have to know that there are standards for the ultimate product put on the field. Quality depth means competition at all positions throughout the offseason and into the season.

This all may sound like fluff, but there are no shortcuts here. No commitment to a plan = little hope for success. It remains to be seen if Embree will work out at CU, but if you go back and look at the three steps, you find several examples where Hawkins failed.

That's was probably some part of it, but he wasn't the only candidate who was cheap at a time when we had no money.

He was by far the most prepared for the interview and knew who his staff would be (i.e. vision). McElwain, by contrast, did not bring a list of assistants, just talked about how he knew how to recruit.

Hello, fans. Funny style of banter on this board. I cant help sticking my nose in.

They hired Embree for his swag, imo. He's got swag to spare. Many of us thought 4-star ballers would be flocking to Boulder. But it didnt happen. Two 4-star players in two years of recruiting, right? I believe Stanford has 15+ 4- or 5- star players in the last two cycles. 2 is not going to get the job done. Does he have the ralent to get over the hump before he gets fired?

Klatt is definitely a know-it-all about football and baseball. You do know he played both professionally?

Also, being paired with Mike Evans is the kiss of death for sports radio.

There is no magic bullet for the BUffs. Recruiting wasn't going to turn around on dime unless CU hired a BIG BIG name coach, with some BIG cash.

I think he's done a good job recruiting. I expect more from him as the years progress, but he brought in some talented players each of the last cycles, and I think the talent level is going to be clearly improved in 2013.

He also seems to be extremely adept at talent evaluation.

I think everyone knows there needs to be more blue chips going forward.

But Embree has done a very good job of attracting Tier 2 guys (just below elite) thus far. You can win with these players. The talent gap is being closed while Embree and his staff repair a lot of relationships in Colorado, California, and Texas.

Klatt played professional football? I thought he never made it out of camp. In fact we have the exact same stat line.

0 TDs, 0 INTs, 0 Yards

Stanford is peaking. Look at how they were recruiting prior to Luck starting and that is a more accurate comparison.

Rivals says 17 4-star and three 5-star players for the Cardinal in the last two cycles. I am surprised Embree has pulled in just two. I thought he was going to turn CU back into USC pretty quick. Back in the glory days, CU had more swag than USC.

I liked Ringo's idea of going uptempo, no-huddle like Oregon or Auburn. Use the altitude to max advantage. Altitude is best for training endurance, but bad for training power. Distance runners go to altitude, sprinters do not. AJ Hawk uses a hyperbaric chamber (even more O2 than sea level) to speed muscle recoveru and healing. I think we gotta try being one of these high tempo teams if Embo dont work. If the opponent is worn out and you arent, he's a 2-star and youre a 4-star. Uptempo offense!!!

Again, stop looking at the last 2 cycles. Stanford is winning based on the cycles before that.

You did not seriously think Embree would be recruiting with USC right away.

We already have a 4 star commited early for 2013

Crawley was borderline 4 star and Dillon was a legit 4 star until he commited to us. That being said, star ratings are nothing more than a way for those pay sites to increase viewership. They are more linked to who is recruiting a player and where they commit then it is actual talent. Now most 4star and 5star players do perform at a high level in college, however there are plenty of cases where kids with 0 1 2 3stars come on to be stars once the reach the college level. It is more about coaching, scheme, and talent evaluation by the coaching staff then it is about stars given by rivals or scout.

I think you'll see more of the up-tempo stuff once the coaches trust that the offense can generate 1st downs consistently. Last year, if they had tried what Ringo had suggested the defense would have been on the field for 45 minutes a game. Embree has to play it close to the vest until the talent comes up. Keep the game winnable in the 4th quarter and expect that by being the tougher team we'll win more than we lose.

Jesus, let's not have this debate again. fify to lessen the weakness.

Go clean the bathroom, private. You have 10 minutes.

it took all of 3 posts!

it is ok to be a cardinal fan here. we don't mind. hell, we even keep a few dumb-arse fuskers around as our message board gimps. but, if you are going to troll because you love another team, like stanford, for example, let's try to be upfront about it.

yeah, CU was going to be competing with usc for talent, out of the gate, with embree. that's a credible statement.

Who wants those players?
