MWC Expands - End of the WAC?

As I'd posted a couple weeks ago, the MWC/C-USA merger wasn't looking good and each conference was likely going to expand through other options.

MWC just snagged Utah State and San Jose State from the WAC.

C-USA just swiped UTSA, which will join them instead of the WAC.

Starting in 2013, the league will be the following 10 teams:

Air Force
CSU
Fresno State
Hawaii
Nevada
New Mexico
San Jose State
UNLV
Utah State
Wyoming

Unless the WAC can add someone, that drops them to 5 football teams. Minimum to have a conference is 6.

Not done yet, but it's about done.

That is a whole lot of suck. We could have dominated that conference.

What is going to happen once CSU leaves?

Why would they leave? With a home date against San Jose State, season ticket sales should go through the roof. I think they're going to need a larger on-campus stadium than previously planned.

I wonder if Boise State/SDSU want back in

Boise and SDSU went to the BE under the assumption that the BE was going to be an AQ conference with the associated $$$. Now that is off the table with the announced end of the BCS alliance (although we still don't know what will replace it long run.) The BE will still do much better than the MWC in terms of media money simply based on having much larger media markets but it is unlikely that they will get the windfall that the schools expected.

With the additional expenses for travel and the disconnect with the conference schools being all the way across the country I doubt that Boise and SDSU stay there in the long run.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the remainding WAC schools. Do they expand with some FCS schools (Big Sky) moving up? Do they merge with or steal from the Sun Belt?

With the new finanicial world of major college football the differences between the haves and have nots has never been greater. Tough decisions for some schools to decide if they want to pretend to be big time while being whipping boys for the major conferences or step down to a lower profile where they have a real chance to compete.

From private sources I know (has been in the CU AD in the past, knows people in all CO departments) the WAC is almost dead, and Denver is looking to jump to the West Coast Conference instead of their planned WAC move. This makes me happy because I'd get to see my alma mater playing in Denver.

Makes sense. WCC is a better spot for DU. It's basically the "western cities conference" anyway.

damn. just from an academics perspective, i feel horrible for air force. look at that lineup of craptastic safety schools.

air force ought to try to go independent, rather than associate itself with this list of the feeble and infirmed.

AFA to the Big12? I would think that they would be a better fit than CSU

Sure. To the Big East. They would accept a Big 12 invite.

Meh - I'm not so sure about that. The same things that made us leave would be unattractive to them as well. They aren't interested in kissing UT's ass, and they don't need money.

The UT shadow is big, but just as big is the suck factor of the MWC.

Problem for Air Force is that they know what their level is. They would like the Big XII money but for them money isn't the driving factor. They also know that they will never get the kind of athletes that will allow them to compete with OU, UT, OSU, etc.

Air Force is not going to get a lot of the guys who are getting offers from top 25 programs, they aren't going to get the guys who are being told that the NFL is a possibility in their future and believing it. They have to recruit kids who would otherwise go to FCS or even D2 schools and hope they can develop them. They also have to be able to get in and handle the academic load and lifestyle of the academy. The advantage they get is that they don't have scholarship limits. They can bring in 50-60 kids a year, play them on the freshman team, and hope that 20 of them develop into contributors.

Air Force can compete with that model in the MWC. They will face individual players who have pro talent but overall the teams aren't talented enough to smash them week after week like they would face in a major conference.

Air Force could very well join the Big East down the road. The idea of being in the same conference as Army and Navy has a lot of appeal if things break that way.

Might see the BE go the way of the old WAC, expand to an unsustainable point then collapse on itself. In this case a conference with the service academies along with 5-6 other schools that are a notch below major conference would be logical. Pull in a couple of the better academic schools from the BE, same from C-USA and they would have their core. If they could get Notre Dame to look at it their dreams would be answered, they might even look at BYU.

Nope

"Know what the biggest shocker in Air Force's decision might be?

Given an opportunity to join Oklahoma and Texas in a revamped Big 12, the Falcons have said thanks, but no thanks.

"We were approached by the Big 12, and I told them we're not a good fit for that conference. In the Big 12, geography makes sense, the economics make sense, but recruiting makes no sense for us. I can't recruit against Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State," Mueh said.

"That's why I turned down the Big 12. I can't do that to my kids, because they'll get beat up. I'd love the extra $12 million or whatever it would be per year from the TV money. And I know how I'd spend the money. I'd build a new soccer stadium, and I'd build a new baseball facility, all in one year. But I can't do that."

WAC is done.

They had been down to 5 teams with the MWC move and C-USA taking UTSA away from them. It just got worse for them.

Now, they're also taking LA Tech.

Worse, Texas State decided to join the Sun Belt instead of the WAC.

WAC is reduced to Idaho and New Mexico State in 2013, so this looks like it will be the conference's final year. Will the MWC take those 2 programs? Will NMSU and Idaho have to drop back to FCS and join the Big Sky?

This is kind of a bummer. I grew up in WY in prime WAC territory and I will miss it even though none of the teams from my youth are in it anymore. I kinda always think of the MW as the WAC anyway.

Should we start calling TCU the "conference killer"? They were members of the SWC, WAC, Conference USA, MWC, Big East (technically), and now the Big 12, and all of that within the last 15 years!

As an NMSU alum as well it pains me to hear the news. Walker was starting to show promise at NMSU too and was recruiting above what NMSU typically does. FCS is probably the best for the school as long as they can keep up bball. The school has always been more of a bball school and bball town than football, except HS football. :(

So, you're saying, the BigAlgebra conference is next?

Maybe it will help UNM build a better football program and take them to the next level. I would really love to see them rise to the level of making sense if and when Pac-12 expansion happens again.

Without question, Idaho was overmatched at the FBS level, even in the WAC. They truly will find better peer schools in the Big Sky. NM State was borderline but I bet they still have hope of landing with the SunBelt as that conference will still have a Texas presence that doesn't make them such an outlier.
