State of the CU Athletic department.

Another school year is closing, and it's appropriate to look at the state of the athletic department as a whole while looking at the individual sports that make up the department:

Football - needs work. A lot of work. The suck-hole created by DII Danny is deeper than we feared. It took an entire year just to beat the puss out of the football players. They finally showed up at the last game of the year. We can only hope that they continue to make that kind of progress. They have a long, long way to go, but progress does appear to be made. Grade: D

Women's Volleyball - Needs a lot of work. A once very solid squad looked terrible last year. The move to the Pac probably impacts this particular sport more than any other. In the Big 12, there was Nebraska and a bunch of other schools that might be OK. In the Pac 12, there's 4 teams that are just as good as Nebraska, and another 4 teams that are just a step below (my guess). The new practice facility should help, but they have a lot of work ahead of them. Grade: D-

Women's Soccer - Fired the coach. That's not good, usually. They should be better than they were this year. Grade: C (They were the first CU squad to win a Pac 12 conference game).

Men's Cross Country: I don't know a damn thing about this, but I know we won the Pac 12. Grade: A
Women's Cross Country: Ditto. Grade: A

Skiing: Finished 3rd in the country as defending national champs. A bit of a let down, but when you're at the top, the only way to go is down (skiing metaphor/pun intended). They didn't go down much. Grade: A

Women's Basketball: Started out great, then ran into a very tough Pac 12 schedule. Managed to hold their own in a tough conference. Lappe is recruiting like a woman possessed. Second year into the NIT. Grade: B

Men's Basketball: Dude, second round of the NCAA and Pac 12 champions. Nuff' said. Grade: A (would give a grade higher than A if I could.)

Track: Well, again, I don't know much about this, but I'm pretty sure we did OK in the Pac 12 championships, and have a few folks who won individual championships. Probably could be a little better, but we're at a distinct disadvantage against schools like Oregon. Grade: B

Women's Tennis: Hell if I know. They never get much attention. I suspect if they were really good, I'd hear about them. Grade: C

Women's Golf: First trip to the NCAA tournament ever. Beat Baylor in the regionals. Finished strong at the regionals. Won a couple tournaments this year. Very strong field. Grade: A (based on beating Baylor. That gets you an automatic "A")

Intangible Athletic Department stuff: Bohn continues to be a champion for CU athletics. He'll go anywhere, anytime to talk about the Buffs. Taking the 50 kids to the Pac 12 championships was a stroke of genius. I don't know if it was his idea, but I give him a ton of credit for doing it. That's a game changing move right there. We'll see other schools copying us. Any time you do that, you are doing well. The Lappe and Boyle hires are looking very strong. There's a lot of smoke about some major facilities upgrades on the horizon. Attendance is up. Revenues are strong. The standing of the department in the community is strong. For the not-so-good stuff: Parking at basketball games is a nightmare. The CU/CSU game in Denver is a disaster, and he has no answer for how to fix it. The ticket office still has a lot of hits and misses. You never know whether the person answering the phone will have the first idea of how to take care of your question. Grade: B+.

Overall GPA: 2.8. Improve football and volleyball and we'll make the Dean's list.

Apologies for placing this in the football forum. Mods can feel free to move elsewhere if they desire. I put it here for the simple reason that football drives the entire department.

Heh, great minds... I was going to do a similar thread. One thing to change is women's tennis gets a F. Winless in the PAC-12 and do not believe anyone advanced out of the first round in the conference tourney.

Bohn has done a really good job with some great hires. He was on my sh*tlist when the whole DII Pigeon thing was imploding, but he pulled us outta that tailspin.

Geez, really? Wow. I had no idea. Like I said, I really don't have any idea about the women's tennis team. That changes the GPA quite a bit.

Yeah, but CU's major is in football. So we may have a 2.8 GPA overall, but a 1.0 in our selected course of study.

The track program is a mixed bag. Coach Wetmore doesn't have the resources to build a complete program like Oregon or Arkansas or A&M. The 8th and 9th place finish at last weekend's PAC12 meet in Eugene was frankly disappointing.

The good news and the strength of the CU track program is that superstars emerge in specific disciplines. CU is the team to beat in the 3000M steeplechase. Jennie Barranger Simpson, Emma Coburn and Shalaya Kipp set the national standard in college steeple. The 1500M, 5K and 10K are all events we can expect to see Buffaloes at or near the front of the pack.

We'll see a heptathelete or 400 guy or a hammer thrower stand out every now and then. But there isn't a consistent tradition of excellence in the sprints, hurdles, jumps, relays, and field events.

This is probably a factor of scholarship offers and funding, not an indictment on Coach Wetmore. It is fun to speculate on whether CU track could become a complete program given enough resources, and what might be in store with a winning football team and lots of P12 network exposure.

CU hosted the B12 conference championship in track a few years back and won that meet. But there is not year in and year out support. Usually CU track finished middle of the pack against peer schools.

I give Wetmore an A for prioritizing and picking his battles wisely, But I give the Track program as a whole a C this year. For an Olympic year, it would be nice to have more buzz and see the Cross Country success carry over into the spring.

The Men's team doesn't have any superstars on display. Grad school transfer Jessica Pixler Tebo is the face of CU track this season. Shalaya Kipp is making a mark. There is a fall off from there. Van Halen is a good story, but he's not going to be an Olympian.

I keep waiting for our men's 10K light to turn on, but haven't seen it yet.

CU's track facilities are awful. We are well known for our distance program. But the speed and field athletes probably prefer warm weather and/or a nice indoor facility.

That was nice of you to mention the indoor facility. Running around the indoor track in balch is old school. And not in a good way. There are beer stains on that floor that are older than you are.

I'm privately holding out hope that the indoor football facility also incorporates multiuse functions for indoor track. Boulder is Colorado's runningest city, and given the number of national champions and olympians who have matriculated at CU, the track and XC teams have earned some somethin' somethin'.

I've heard from some birds that it will be multi use.

One thing that is very positive is that while tennis and volleyball aren't performing up to standards, both did very well in recruiting. Things are looking up.

Also of note and I don't think it was mentioned... we added a sport with women's lacrosse. That's a big deal. CU had done nothing but cut sports for the past 25 years.

2009-2010 was horrible

Football: 3-9
MBB: 15-16. 6-11 in Big XII
WBB: 13-16. 3-14 in Big XII
Volleyball: 6-22. 2-18 in Big XII

Didn't bother looking at the other sports

CU requires a 3.5 for the Dean's List. Don't lower the standard.
