I have no dog in this fight, but this has all the appearances of a smear job. The lead story in the Denver Post with a headline of "Report: Mullen football program was out of control under Dave Logan" Out of control? For illegal fundraising? Letting kids stand on the sidelines? An assistant coach had contact with one youth player? Hell, my kid was a freaking soccer player and she got recruited by three area high schools. This qualifies as "out of control?" Not only that, but the school hires one of the best and most expensive law firms in the state, Holland and Hart, to conduct the investigation?

Something smells really rotten here.

It is a smear campaign, and i don't see it ending well for Ryan Clement. He's messing with the wrong guy.

This.

Logan has to much history in the area and way to many friends in the media. If you are going to go after him you better have a lot more than what is reported in the post in terms of charges and evidence.

I can state for fact that a Mullen coach went to several Jefferson county football games that I coached. He spoke to the player after the game as well. This coach attended practice as well.

He is the kids father.

I have two nephews playing HS football now. Neither has been recruited by other schools. A teammate has been recruited by Mullen, Regis, and Valor after he was enrolled at a public school.

I think that some think that this cheating is common place, but it is not. Although I am a CU Alum., I can't stand Dave Logan. I have met him several times and he is an *****. A lot of people here will disagree, but do not be blinded by Colorado ties.

I'm not sure what your point is, here. I happen to think Logan is an entirely overrated football coach. I've seen him coach up close and personal, and I'm not impressed. It's a fact that his assistants do most of the coaching and that he's little more than a figurehead. That doesn't change my opinion of what's going on here, though. For some reason, Ryan Clement thinks he needs to smear Logan in order to justify firing him. In reality, he needs to do no such thing. He should have just let this go, as there isn't much to the allegations anyway. Whether Logan is a good coach or not or whether he's an asshole or not isn't relevant, IMO. What is relevant is that he's a well known celebrity in Denver. He's earned a high level of respect from the community, the media, and the casual fans. Logan grew up in Wheatridge, played three sports at CU, and ended his career as a Denver Bronco. Ryan Clement wouldn't give CU the time of day, went to Miami, was a mediocre QB, and hasn't earned near the respect that Logan has. As I said before, he's messing with the wrong guy. This is not going to end well for him.

Kind of off topic, but is Mullen considered a good school academically?

I was curious about this Ryan Clement fellow, so I looked him up. His credentials seem rather light for a high school president. So far as I can tell, he bounced around minor league football for most of the 90s and early 00's, then went to law school at the U, graduating in 2005. Not much else is mentioned before he becomes president of Mullen. Does he have any background in education? I couldn't find any. Bizarre.

edit...found his linked in profile. Wow, that is a damn thin resume.

I do not disagee with you. You made some good points. For a change. Sarcasm. I just know that the private schools recruit. I have talked to younger HS players that have been contacted by several private schools. It is against the rules, but they see college coaches cheating all the time. So why can't they do the same thing.

Maybe real enforcement would be the answer.

Sure, private schools recruit. That's not even what is at issue here. What Mullen is stating is that Logan broke some rules in the way he recruited. I'm still baffled by that one. This whole thing is ridiculous and it's going to make things much, much more difficult for Mullen going forward.

Not that I care. Screw Mullen.

Semi-OT:

How cool would it be to see him at Boulder High? I'd love to see them return to some kind of relevance football-wise.

Not sure if serious...

But yeah, I'd like to see that as well. I've run the chains at BHS games for 11 years now, and haven't done a single playoff game in that time. The few times BHS has been in the playoffs the games were road games.

I know he's a polarizing figure among most Buff fans, but I'm tired of seeing BHS suck year in and year out. Time for them to get serious and make FB a priority. It would be fun to see him take over in Boulder.

You know he's already been names the head coach for Cherry Creek right?

Mullen is considered a very good school academically, for the prices they charge they had better be. They take a lot of pride in the number of their students who get accepted to Ivy League and other top tier schools, also the number of students who get prestigious scholarships and other awards.

This may have been a part of the rub against Logan and the prior administration. They want to have athletic success since it gets the name of the school in front of the public. The problem was that a number of the athletes who went to Mullen to play for Logan and get exposure athletically either didn't have the academic ability or motivation to succeed at the level of the majority of Mullen students.

Apparently, and I am not an insider so this is second hand, a number of influential parents and donors believed that the same athletes who were raising the profile of the school in sports were soiling the reputation of the school in the classroom. They felt that excessive compromises were being made to admit and accomidate these athletes which were not in line with "a school of the quality" that they wanted or saw themselves as being.

The rumor has it that when Clement was brought on board he was tasked with finding a solution to this situation. There is no question that he did just that. The problem is did he make a bigger mess than he cleaned up. That is still to be seen.

Not long after Sal Aunese died, some nubraska fans marched thru the Keg with a sign dissing Sal ( can't remember if it was "Sal is dead, Go big red" or another). Logan went up to them and physically took the sign away , after many had done nada. It's been a lot of years, but he's 100% a Buff and I support him regardless.

was he a BB announcer back then?

Unpossible! Nubraska fans are the classiest fans in the world. They say so themselves!

This thing is scummy all the way around....I think Clement is promoting his own agenda - rumors of him wanting to Coach the QBs and being told no by Logan seems to have a little ring of truth to it. He did coach the QBs before Logan got there. He also founded an Organization that emphasizes Athletic performance - http://category5sports.com/football-training-instructors.html while at the same time is trying to de-emphasize football at Mullen.

At the same time Logan does recruit players...The whole Dave Logan and his posse thing is getting out of hand on the Colorado HS football scene. Logan's tenure at Mullen has resulted in a huge chasm between the academic side of the house and the football program. Kids were brought into the school that had no business going to school there...Maurice Greer is a good example, a football star at Mullen who could not even get into college. It was causing a lot of concern with parents and faculty that winning at football was coming at too high of an ethical cost.

That being said - Ryan Clement has handled it worst than badly - he now has become the face of the firing and it is a mess.

Put Ryan Clement in the long list of screw ups. He messed with the bull and got the horns...Dave Logan > Ryan "Almost made the pros" Clement. Good luck at your next gig Ryan...
