He´s in Boulder taking classes on his own dime, but won´t know re: gray shirt till August.

That is unexpected - was he the one whose suffered the knee injury in his senior year?

If the knee isn't responding might make a lot of sense. Give him another year to rehab. I also think getting an extra spring practice in is huge for some kids. He can come in and learn the system in spring, RS for the fall if he needs to then come back the following year healthy and with a complete grasp of the offense and four years to play.

I hope for our sake that Tyler McCulloch is a lot better than I think he is, otherwise it might be a very bumpy ride the first half of the season.

I thought once you started taking classes the clock started, regardless of whether or not your practiced with the team.

having a hard time "catching" a break here in Boulder... need receivers to step up big time

I'd be pissed if I was Peyton. Accept a college scholarship, then pay for my own classes? Then to not find out about greyshirting or not a month before his freshman year? Big boy football I guess

Our coaches break the news in a classier way, so it's all good.

I don't know the circumstances, and generally I would agree with your premise, but are we sure he's being forced to greyshirt? If his family has the coin to pay for the classes it may be his choice to greyshirt to stall the clock running on his eligibility if he's not going to be healthy enough to compete for playing time this year.

I thought once you started taking classes the clock started, regardless of whether or not your practiced with the team.

As long as he is taking 6 hours or less per full semester he is considered a part-time student and the clock doesn't start on him.

I'm guessing that his injury isn't responding as quickly as he would have liked.

It makes total sense if he's not ready for camp. A freshman isn't going to earn a spot on the depth chart if he can't participate in camp. If that's the case, he may as well save the year of eligibility so he wouldn't lose a year if he got injured some time over the next 4.
