If you had asked me who I hate the most right now... it would probably be Nebraska. But we don't have a rival anymore. Should add UU to the poll btw.

Rivalries don't happen unless there is something at stake and the other team has cost you something.

Right now we are in a new conference and we haven't yet played any games that had big rewards attached to them. Once we start playing those kinds of games then a rival will naturally happen.

Something I was thinking about on this is that a rival is very important.

Every program needs to have another as a measuring stick.

I don't think it's coincidence that as Nebraska went down so did CU. In the case of CSU, their level is determined by CU. When CU is great, they are able to ride the wave to be pretty good and when we're bad they sink to the depths of D1 football.

We need that measuring stick a good rival provides. It isn't now and can't ever be CSU for us. It probably can't even be Utah. Utah can become a rival, but not the rival. I don't know if USC will ever fly since it would be one-way (they've got Notre Dame and UCLA plus Cal and Stanford to feel passionate about - with the rest of the conference going on and off their radar based on how good of a run the team is on).

I'm thinking that we're going to end up having to focus on UCLA or Arizona State. UCLA makes more sense to me.

I think none right now but in the future I kind of think that it almost has to be Utah. To me, it's got to be a team that we meet every year no matter what so that just leaves the teams in the South. USC has too many rivals, the Arizona schools seem to hate each other too much to care about any other team, which just leaves Utah and UCLA. Since Utah is in the same position, I think it would make sense to be them.

I think it's Arizona St right now. In recruiting we're fighting for the same pool of 3* guys who are willing to leave Cali. Beyond us, they're the team most likely to finish in the South division cellar in 2012.

If you are going to put CSewe on the list, you might as well put UNC, Mines and CSewe Pueblo on there too.

At this point, we do not have one. Utah may develop into one. The win last year on their home field was a good start. As for a "Red Letter Team", it needs to be the big guy on the block we will play most years. SC should be the measuring block. They are as big a hurdle as Knu was when Mac callled them out as our rival.

It's CSU whether we care to admit it or not. We play them every year in just about every sport.

I should add that it's a sh*tty rivalry. Very one-sided and completely irrelevant on a national scale. The games have no bearing on any conference title. The football games are held in a soul crushing gulag.

A real rivalry will develop when we repeatedly play meaningful games against an opponent. We can pick a team that we want to emmulate, but ultimately, unless you play games that really mean something against them, it won't be a rivalry. That's why NU became a rivalry. It started as a model program and became a rivalry as we started playing games against them that mattered.

I think we'll develop one with someone. But it will take time (oh, and us not sucking).

How's the saying go? Even a blind pig finds a nut every once in a while. CSU is, IMO, the closest thing we have to a rivalry at this point. It's a crappy rivalry, though. That's the cost of leaving the Big 12. It's not a big loss, IMO. Rivalries engender hatred from both sides. CSU certainly hates us. Based on some of the posts directed at CSU on this site, there's a lot of CU fans who hate CSU, too.

At the end of the day, I really don't think it's important to have a true rival.

No. Stop making excuses for yourself.

I'm not making excuses. NU, since we don't play them anymore (or in the known future), is tough to have them as a rival, as much as we hate them. We are seen as a joke by the PAC 12 right now and that leaves CSU. We will develop a PAC 12 rivalry, but right now we just don't have one. Maybe I'm showing my age, idk I just see CSU as ours right now, as ****** as it may be.

No, CSU is not our rival. A rival implies that your opponent is something of an equal. CSU is not an equal.

I disagree. But I suppose your view of the situation is dependent on your definition of what makes a rival.

I think a rival comes from big games that mean something on a regular basis. The Ewe game really means nothing to CU except a win we are supposed to get. A rivalry should not have this as a criteria for either team. We can set a standard by picking a team to emulate like Mac did and once you start having success, you can push it into a rival game. It will take time to happen.

CSU will not be a rival as long as we are expected to win 8 to 9 out of every 10. They can try and emulate us and hope to get to our level some day (just as Mac did with NU), but until they reach a point of making it a real game that means something, it is just a non-conference game.
