Elite 11 show on ESPN U right now

I watched that this afternoon too. I liked seeing Dilfer praise Shane. And to make the elite 11 out of the tons of kids who aspired to be there is great for him and hopefully a precursor to greatness with the Buffs!

I know absolutely nothing about what is going on in the coaches minds, but I am starting to get a nagging feeling that Shane is going to be our starter this year. I just keep hearing how good he is from pretty much every source. Any of you gurus have any input on what you are hearing/thinking?

I've had this thought come across my mind a lot and I can't shake it. I just think he comes in and blows the coaches away.

He needs to put on a good 20 pounds of muscle or hes going to get rocked in the pocket...

If he is the starter, I'm going to be PISSED. Nothing against the kid, but why waste the scholarship on Webb if you don't plan on redshirting Dillon?

I want the best player after fall practice to be named the starter.

We had way to many years of no QB competition thanks to DII. If Dillon comes into camp and wins the job more power to him. If Dillon comes in and wins the job but they name Webb the starter we are going to have the same crap QB issues we had with Cody and Hansen.

Hopefully Webb comes in and kills it during camp and earns the job and this is a non-issue.

In my ideal world, Webb is a very solid backup to Wood. Hirschman is the third string guy, with Dillon redshirting. In 2013, Wood and Dillon are fighting for the starters job, with Liufau as a redshirt.

Mid-road here- I hope the schollie used on Webb indicates that he emerges from Fall camp as a solid starting option. I think as long as he is close to or beyond the level of his competition (Wood/Hirsch) he gets the nod. Once the team is in camp all their scholarships are equal, so may the best man win. I too want the skills on the field to be the ones that determine the roster. Freshmen QBs should only start if their play is so far superior to every other option that they give the coaching staff no choice but to put them in. Frankly even if Webb/Wood don't have a clear winner between them there is still a value to bringing in a guy who has starting experience as competition/backup. At least it provides an extra level of protection before you need to burn Dillon's RS for a half game of injury time. For Dillon, RS has to be the preferred option, an extra year to grow and observe should be the expectation for incoming QBs.

I honestly don't know why people are freaking out. We apparently had the scholarship to use this year. We needed a plan B that had D1 experience. The coaches I think would feel much more comfortable with Wood starting since he has been here two years and knows the play book and has the tools and has shown what he can do, just isn't very consistent. If a true freshman can beat out all these folks then he should start, doesnt matter about the other scholarships. We need the best QB on the field to get to our goal this season.

If Dillon starts, you're going to be pissed that Webb got a scholarship? I think it is a smart move to be prepared. Dillon is a wild card. Nobody has seen Dillon play against D1 talent yet. Obviously the coaches aren't too happy with Wood or Hirschman to think that getting Webb here was worth the scholly.

If Dillon ends up the starter, then great! I'd bet that he wouldn't start the season at #1. But getting Webb is a useful insurance policy and worth the scholarship to me.

Our coaches brought in QBs because their job rests on that position for this year. We are too young and inexperienced to go to a bowl game without a quality QB. We need the competition to be fierce to see who the starter is (playbook, leadership, arm, reads, etc...).

Tyler Bray

IF SD has Tyler Bray's elite arm talent, I am in. Many are saying Bray could be the number one draft choice in the 2013 NFL Draft. Otherwise, I want SD and coach Blacken to develop a good relationship because we'll need him to be durable and stronger going forward. From the looks of it, we are recruiting players to run a system similar to the current GB Packers/90s Denver Broncos with some nice run-game stuff to set up deep play action. We'll need a durable, mobile QB who can make those nice throws. IMHO, Wood is the favorite to win the job with Webb and Schrock fighting for the backup job.

The only place I have heard Bray being the #1 pick is from UT fans on Rivals. Got any links?

Most of that is from my follow of Sigmund Bloom of Football Guys and Bleacher Report. Guys like McShay concur that Bray has enough pure arm talent to be the #1 pick. Will look for links.

I know that the BR is not the best thing ever, but the guy does watch a ton of film on NFL and college prospects. His info is usually pretty on point.

He still writes on BR, where anyone can write an article so I have a very tough time on taking anything on there even remotely serious.

As for Dillon playing this year. I just don't think that's in any way going to be a good move. Dillon is pretty damn skinny and needs a year in the weight room. He also played very poor competition in high school so he's going to need some time to adjust. His mechanics should be better than most since he has been working with that QB coach, but I just don't see how he comes in and really does anything of value this season. He seems pretty tough minded, but tossing him in there and having him struggle probably isn't the best way to treat the franchise QB.

Wood not separating himself from Hirschman worries me a ton. He might not ever be able to get it if he's not outplaying a guy that has a broken foot every other month. Webb could be a decent player for us and might even be able to take us to a nice bowl game IF we had a good running team. Unfortunately, we don't. We're going to need plays from our QB and I have trouble seeing him as that guy.

The guy who has had injury issues in his first two years? Great example, dude. You never cease to amaze me tini.
He was also named SEC Freshman of the week three times in 2010 after he took over the starting position after the Scar game (he actually played the 2nd half of the Scar game). Last season he missed some games with a broken thumb, but I hardly think that's due to his weight. Bray, on his Rivals recruiting page, was listed at 6'6" 187. Dillon, on his Rivals recruiting page, is listed at 6'5" 185. That's a pretty small difference between the two. What other injuries did Bray have other than his broken thumb in 2011?

If that's true, then I apologize and you're right about him. I don't follow UT much, all I know about Bray is from NFL prospect scouting reports and people always say he's injury plagued. I noticed he missed a large chunk of last season, but if it was from a broken thumb, then yeah, his weight probably wasn't the cause of that injury.

I still maintain that a year in the weight room would massively benefit Dillon.

If Dillon establishes himself as a viable threat for the backup job, he should see snaps this year. He may not survive a season's worth of hits at 185, but 1-2 series a game would benefit him for the looming competition in the spring of 2013. If he looks completely lost, just redshirt him.

This makes no sense to me. Giving away a 5th year, with all the experience and knowledge that comes with it, for 1-2 series per game in a Freshman season that we'll be lucky to win 6 games? What am I missing? We have Wood, Webb and Hirschman. Granted, Hirschman has been a disappointment, but we have other QB's that can play. The difference between Dillon playing this year and him not isn't even a one game swing, IMO. I'd much rather have him in 2016 than 2012.
