Harris-Tunks seeks breakout year for CU Buffs

Comparisons to former players senior years. Any idea if Tunks is considering finishing up this year?

I've heard speculation and rumors, but nothing substantial enough to warrant a post about it.

I could see it if he graduates. He's a long way from home and all the guys that were more his classmates are gone. We have 1 senior (Chen) and he got here after Shane. If Dre leaves after this year, there would be no one he'd have played with more than 2 seasons. That's a lot of separation for a 5th year senior.

But just because I could see it and would understand it if he made that decision DOES NOT mean that I know anything or have any idea whether there's anything to that speculation.

Anyway, I think Shane's going to have a pretty big year. He'll be big for us in 2012-13.

really liked this comment:

"I think in the past, my freshman and sophomore year, teams would come in here not thinking much of Colorado," Harris-Tunks said. "Now Colorado is a school you prepare for and you have to be ready to play."

The eurotrip is going to really boost Shane's game.

UVA seems to be doing the exact same trip this year. Same countries, same time.

He played a lot last year like he was still worried about the knee which is natural. If he can come back this year and just play him game he will help us a lot.

The Simba we saw the last few weeks of the season is the one I think we'll see this year. He was great for us, he filled his role and was a presence. He'll be huge for the team.

That sky hook he developed very late in the season and a few of those dunks he had show me that he is gaining his confidence again in that knee. If he keeps progressing this offseason I cannot wait to see what a man with his size could do for us in the low post.

"Dufault averaged 11.1 points and 4.4 rebounds as a senior after averaging 6.6 and 4.2 as a junior. Knutson averaged 11.7 points with 81 made 3-pointers as a senior after averaging 3.5 points with 10 made 3-pointers as a junior.
A strong work ethic has paid off for other Bzdelik recruits under Boyle."

one could also conclude more than work ethic but playing for Boyle gave both Levi and AD double figure sr seasons. no doubt work ethic is part of it, but th0se Bzdelik teams were cellar dwellers in the XII and hard to watch imo. watching guys try harder to run the system than score the ball was frustrating as a fan. must have been hard to play it too. tomlinson had by far his best year under Boyle as well. sure, some of it is being older and experience etc.

would love to see Shane have a solid year for us in the paint...whatever the reason. he's limited a bit but can give us some quality minutes and leadership and maturity.

also, simba is a lion. His mere presence spreads fear and dismay amongst the smaller creatures that are his enemies, or, as I like to call them, his prey.

It will be important for Tunks to play well the first two months while the young bigs adjust to the next level. The games in Charleston, CSU, and Wyo, etc. tend to be games where we underachieve, mainly because we get beat badly down low.

while true, it's been so long since we've had any real inside game and 15 fouls to give in the paint for 40 minutes.....winning 2 of those 3 would be a legit goal. just saying, mismatch against Stanford here was all too obvious and no inside play or physical D in the paint was a hallmark of CU basketball under Jeff B.

you give us a couple extra fouls to give, we beat Kansas a couple more times at the CEC. for example. just someone who can put there arms in the air and put a little body on those twins.

You guys are ridiculous. How much sunshine can a sunshine pumper pump if a sunshine pumper could pump sunshine? This thread points to a new high.

I think I would be ecstatic if he did something like 8 points/5 boards per game, which should be doable.

Ok, but then you're willing to accept the 5-6 turnovers that will accompany those points and rebounds, right? And the 3-5 and-1s he'll give up?

Lemme just say I want nothing for the best for sht. I hope I'm wrong, but I've seen nothing to indicate any sort of assent from him this upcoming year. That's why i find this thread funny. Again, I'd love to be wrong.

I was actually joking about Simba killing everyone. I think he's gonna be bad again.

I've always been higher on Shane than everyone else. That hasn't changed. I just want to remind everyone that some of his biggest critics went from "Simba" and "Giant Boulder" jokes to saying the last quarter of the season that we were a better team with him on the court.

Hmmm. Some, yes.

I went back and looked at his stats the last few games and was not impressed.

I just want someone, don't care who, to hard foul this little ****er on the first three he tries to take in the second round game of the Charleston Classic and make him think twice about doing it again. That is all.

His game is not stats. There's a lot that goes on with setting screens and playing good help defense.

if you are trying to defend the non-stat part of his game...i dunno. i remember pretty well how terrible he was defending the pick and roll in the tourney--both PAC-12 and the big dance. and his help defense is way too slow, always trying to get to a spot before the quicker guard and he almost always got called for the block. that's my memory of it, at least...

Nobody is pretending like SHT is going to be an all-PAC type of player or work his way into the lottery, he is just way to limited in a number of ways.

That in mind he is a big strong kid who can and will play some defense, grab some board, and play team ball. He is a liability against teams that are quick in the paint and you can't depend on him to be a force offensively. He did start to show before he got hurt and again at the end of last year a better offensive game which was enough to force defenders to pay attention to him and not help as much against the driving wings.

Our young bigs are much more talented than SHT will ever be but they will need some time to adjust. If SHT can come back this season and build on last year then he will be valuable when we are playing against bigger, stronger players. He will also give Tad someone to go to when the momentum of games starts taking the young guys out of what they need to be doing. Tad will be able to send in a veteram, pull the young guys aside and do some coaching and give them a blow before sending them back in.

If we are counting on him to win games for us we are in deep trouble, if we are counting on him to provide quality depth and a change of pace then he can be big for us.
