With the voting for the frontcourt & backcourt done, it's time to have the finals for the AllBuffs All-Time Men's Basketball Team. This is the best of the best. The top 5 vote getters from each group along with two wild cards have been selected. Today, you vote for the five players that you think are most deserving of being on the team. You can vote regardless of position, and use whatever criteria you want (favorite, best, etc.). I've decided to extend voting for an extra day on this one due to the weekend, so the poll won't officially close until Tuesday morning.

The candidates are....

  • Chauncey Billups (1995-97): Billups was an All-American for the Buffs and led the team to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in his sophomore season at Colorado before going pro and becoming the third pick in the NBA Draft.
  • Donnie Boyce (1991-95): A two time member of the All-Big 8 First Team and a member of the All-Big 8 Freshman Team. Boyce was also the school's all-time leading scorer until Richard Roby passed him (and Higgins tied Roby a few years later).
  • Alec Burks (2009-11): The prolific scoring shooting guard was named Honorable Mention All-American his sophomore year at CU and is fifteenth on the Buffs all-time scoring list, despite only playing two seasons. He declared for the Draft and was the 12th pick of the Utah Jazz.
  • Ken Charlton (1960-63): Charlton was an All-American his senior year at Colorado who also managed to be All-Big 8 First Team three times while at CU. He is also a member of the CU Hall of Fame.
  • Birdie Halderson (1951-55): The most decorated player in school history. All-American, two-time Olympic gold medal winner, and a member of the CU Hall of Fame, the Basketball Hall of Fame and the Pac-12 Basketball Hall of Honor. He's also one of two Buffs to have his jersey retired.
  • Cory Higgins (2007-11): The four year player is tied with Richard Roby as CU's All-time leading scorer. He was also a repeat member of the All-Big 12 third team and was voted the University of Colorado Best Defender by his teammates in his senior year.
  • Jay Humphries (1980-84): A two-time Honorable Mention All-American, Humphries is also in the record books as CU's all-time assist and steal leader. CU's fourteenth all-time leading scorer, Humphries was the 13th pick in the NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns.
  • Cliff Meely (1969-71): Along with Halderson, the only Buffs to have their jerseys retired at the school. Meely is in the CU Hall of Fame and was named to the All-Time Big 8 First Team when the conference changed to the Big 12.
  • Stephan Pelle (1999-03): The school's all-time leading rebounder, Pelle has over 80 more rebounds than the player in second place. He is the first player in school history with over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career.
  • Andre Roberson (2010-Present): After only two seasons, Roberson is already 9th in school history for total rebounds. He owns the single season rebounding record, and also owns the freshman and sophomore rebounding marks in school history.
  • Richard Roby (2004-08): Along with Higgins, Roby is tied as CU's all-time leading scorer. He was named to the All-Big 12 Freshman team as well as being named All-Big 12 First Team once in his career.
  • Shaun Vandiver (1988-91): An Honorable Mention All-American with the Buffs, and a two-time member of the All-Big 8 First Team, Vandiver is second in school history when it comes to points per game.

I don't want to say this one's over this early, but there are five vote-getters who are dramatically ahead of everyone else. Barring a dramatic swing, I think we know our team.

Voted for Dre over burks in my "modern era" category. Although burks was great, didn't win anything historic in his time here. Dre already has, AND he has another year to do something about it while re-writing the record books. Not to mention he should have been Pac12 DPOY last year.

Plus, at the end of the day, it's Dre's ****ing ball. Fact. (ALLCAPS)

Burks was a great player, no doubt. But I don't think that he deserves a place on the team over Donnie Boyce. Boyce literally carried CU for four years, was a leader on and off the court .. and was every bit as good as Burks, if not better. He could have left for the NBA as a lottery pick after first two years, but he stayed in school anyway. He suffered a severely broken leg at the end of his senior season. He was drafted anyway on the 2nd round by Atlanta, was on injured reserve for a year, but never recovered to the level that he was before, He was out of the NBA a year later. In my book, Boyce is second only to Chauncy Billips in talent and better than Jay Humphries. Nobody contributed more to CU BB over four years, except perhaps a couple of the older guys like Cliff Meely.

Boyce or Burks was my 5th choice decision. I went with Alec. It was basically a coin flip.

huge fan of Donnie Boyce, met him a couple times. really friendly guy. hard to know b/ween him and AB. right now AB prolly means more to the program since Donnie played on some pretty average teams that didn't have a lot of upside. i'd also Donnie could have benefited from having some better coaching. he was great player, scorer...but wasn't like he was getting pushed in practice. to be honest, Chauncey was always a great talent but he really came into his own at Detroit playing for Larry Brown. before that, and certainly at CU, was not a good defender and bounced around the league, Boston, Denver, Toronto i think. Donnie could have used that. minus injury and someone making him work. even though i bag on Bz, at least he was coaching *something*. and Alec was pretty danged good his one year with Tad. a big problem at CU in my era of fandom is players (at least up to now)....don't really get better much over the course of a career. I think Donnie was like that a bit.

i would probably take AB over Donnie in the aforementioned coinflip, but Donnie had a lot of talent and is pretty under-appreciated. he was an NBA player legit. to me, that's saying something. back when we were a football school, it was hard to see some decent CU hoops teams and legit star like Donnie play in front 3000 people. even after the horrible injury, he made the Hawks roster a few years. cashed a check.

also add Donnie is coaching at his HS alma mater, Chicago's Proviso East. where he played on a mammoth HS team with Michael Finley and Sherrell Ford.

thank you wiki.

I'd vote but basically only know guys from the last 5 ish years (besides Chauncey/Harrison)
