Stanford's "rivalry" with San Jose State

First played in 1900.

Stanford leads all-time series 50-14-1 (77.3%)

Conference affiliations: Stanford (Pac-12) / San Jose State (MWC)

Sound familiar?

Except that Stanford knows how to negotiate and doesn't treat inferiors as equals for political reasons. In the entire history of that series, 61 games have been played at Stanford and only 4 have been played at San Jose State.

It is a good comparison, except Stanford also has Cal nearby - not to mention UCLA and USC. That splits up the state hierarchy more than in Colorado where it was CSU, then CSU for quite awhile. Now it is CU, then AFA. Unfortunately we've been locked into this silly series against CSU for forever.

I have to admit - I have no idea of what you are trying to say.

Just for fun, I went to wikipedia pages to look at all-time program records.

Things that make you go, "Hmmmmm".

Sorry, I meant that for 2 - 3 decades it was CU #1 in the state and CSU #2 in the state. Lately it has been CU #1 and AFA #2.... that is a much different dynamic than Stanford and San Jose State.

Nik where'd you get those stats? CFDW has Stanford at 585-435-50, .570 and SJSU at 454-459-37, .497. Otherwise I agree with ya.

CFDW is a better source. As I said in the ****ing post I made, I just went to wikipedia for fun. Feel free to create new tables with the better numbers. :smile2:

Definitely the most comparable series out there to CU/CSU. SJSU faces the same exact woes as CSU with atrociously low fan support, an apathetic alumni base, etc. It should make every Buff cringe when thinking of our state of affairs with CSU given that Stanford has played 61/65 against SJSU at home. Unfortunately, if this was brought to Bohn's attention (it should be), he would probably just go off on the tangent of Stanford being a private school and thus not having to deal with the political baggage that CU has with CSU. This has to change, the 9 game conference schedule is the absolute breaking point, as far as I'm concerned. Hopefully the murmurs of getting out of this early (and soon) will prove true, but 2020 cannot come soon enough. Never again.

Pisses me off having our all-time win percentage dip slightly below 60% (although for convenience sake, we'll continue to round up) thanks to the Error. This must be fixed in coming seasons.

Ugh I know. Pissed we haven't gone over 700 wins either. **** Halkins.

If we don't start winning some games, like now, Washington will overtake us in all-time wins and drop us to 3rd in the Pac. Our atrocious last few seasons combined with UW making bowl games again has allowed them to climb within 4 wins of us. We have a 676 to 672 edge heading into this season.

They won't be passing us any time soon. Embree is gonna get this thing rollin and we'll be over 700 sooner than you know it. I've also learned to despise UW. ****y ****s.

They're probably going to win 7 games this year (6-8 range is a pretty safe bet). We need to go 6-6 in order to not allow them to get much closer. And yes, I completely agree on their fans. Obviously there are exceptions, but as a whole that group is awfully ****y considering they went winless just a few short years ago. I understand that they are used to dealing with Oregon bandwagoners all the time, which certainly would get annoying, but their feeling of complete superiority towards CU is unwarranted.

Well, good thing we're going 7-6 this year:thumbsup:

SJSU is far closer to UNC than it is to CSU. It's simply not a good comparison. SJSU is the old teachers college in California and has a total endowment of about $75 million which is far more comparable to UNC ($65 million) than it is to CSU ($398 million). Also, SJSU played in the Big West until the mid-1990's and competed at a D1AA level for decades.

CSU is more of a peer institution to many of CU's former and current conference mates and this constant campaign to pretend otherwise by some on here is silly. If you want to compare, CSU is closer to Oregon State, Washington State, Kansas State, Utah, etc. than it will ever be to SJSU.

SJSU has always been a bit of a head scratcher for me. Why they haven't followed the South Florida model of simply taking anyone, be it high risk cast offs from the state's bigger powers, non-quals, Katoa-rocks, etc., confounds me. It's almost as though they go out of their way to take Hawk-love level talent and get rolled. It's not as if they have any reputation whatsoever to protect.

That's a different conversation, Csquared.

Should CSU be more than it has been? Does it have more in common with an Oregon State or Iowa State than a San Jose State as a football program? Probably so.

But I'm talking about what it is and not what it should be.

Furd-SJSU and CU-CSU are very similar matchups. In fact, the gap between CU and CSU is actually larger than the gap between Furd and SJSU.

Compared to SJSU, CSU has the better football program in the last 25 years, hands down. Hate to say it, but I agree with CSquared for the most part. But, I also think CSU is somewhere is the lower to middle of the spectrum between WSU, Oregon State, Utah and SJSU. And, football wise, it doesn't hold a candle to KSU.

Thats ****ing great, thanks for making my day so early in the day!

I agree that we've bungled our handling of this series, but It's not really a fair comparison IMO. Stanford has 3 other in state PAC 12 opponents on their schedule every year and San Jose St ranks somewhere between San Diego St and Long Beach Poly HS in terms of popularity in CA.

Whether we like it or not, CSU is probably the 2nd largest football program in CO (apologies to AFA). It's sort of a forced rivalry due to us being the 2 largest state institutions. STanford and SJSU don't have that same relationship.

The other difference in this series is that Stanford is a private school and probably cant be pushed around by politics as easily. No excuses though this series is really lame... Hopefully someday we can switch it out with a Nub game.

This. People are underestimating the pressure that the folks in Capitol building have exerted on this, which is unfortunate.

Um no, how about just dropping it. **** :rip:cornholio:rip: and their inbred herd living in Colorado. No need to give those ****ers anything.

Washington State and Kansas State have each won a BCS conference championship within the past decade. Oregon State has played in a BCS bowl. Utah has played in, and won, a BCS bowl. KSU, Utah and Oregon State each draw 45k+ to their games. Washington State, while struggling with attendance, certainly does better than CSU. The money OSU, Wazzu, Utah and yes, even KSU are raking in these days is in no way comparable to CSU's lack of funds. Clearly you are more comparable to your MWC peer institution. The same struggles for attendance, struggles for wins, etc. Is CSU a little better off than SJSU? Yes. But you're certainly closer to SJSU than K-State.
