I'm still pissed. Tried to be reasonable. Don't know if I was able to achieve that. This one was tough.

Not only did CU get handled, but when you look at explosive plays the only conclusion is that it could have been worse. While I think the refs got the calls right, CSU was very close to getting a couple more fumble recoveries (one returned for a 99 yard TD the other way), an onside kickoff recovery, and a game-sealing interception.

Buffs may have only lost by 5, but got absolutely whipped.

Great job, well done nik!

Any momentum cu had just went splat. Another losing season coming up. Only hope for this program is p-rich stays healhty next year and with all these returning starters back, cu finlly makes a bowl game in 2013.
 
When looking at the 1st Half Stats, the thing that stands out to me is that the Buffs were 4/9 on third downs and 1/1 on 4th downs. That's very efficient offense even if there were no explosive plays. On defense, it was lights out with CSU 0/7 on third down conversions and 0/1 on 4th downs.

1st Half: CU Offense - 210 yards. CSU Offense - 117 yards.

Wow, didn't know they had 0 3rd down conversions in the first half. I agree with just about everything in that writeup.
 
We craped the bed in the 2nd half because we were out coached in every phase of the game....

Great stuff Nik.

It will be very interesting to see how the coaches approach the offensive gameplanning as the season progresses. The issues at WR will not be going away, so it will be up to the coaching staff to manufacture offense in different ways. That starts with forcing opposing defenses to defend more of the playing field. On Saturday, CSU figured out that we were not going to run outside of the tackles and that we were not going to utilize the tight ends in the passing game. That essentially gave the Rams a "free" defender on every pass play.

There are going to have to be more designed runs to the outside. Not many mind you, but enough to keep the defense more honest. We also need to use the middle of the field more in the passing game. This could include moving Spruce and/or McCulloch inside at times, but mostly means utilizing several tight ends and running some middle screens.
 
Great write up. The offensive stats tell everything, especially in the 2nd half. It worries me that we're going to see a rerun of the past 7 years. A horrible offense who goes 3 and out constantly leading to a worn down defense. The hurry up offense is going to be a nightmare if they dont move the ball. I truly can't believe how bad it is at WR.
 
At WR, I was pretty happy with Spruce in his first game. 8 catches, including a touchdown. The issue here is we're talking about a guy who should be matched up against the other team's nickel corner or safety -- not the other team's best corner. McCulloch should be a 4th WR lining up in the slot and having a size advantage against a dime corner or safety and a speed & pass game technique advantage against a linebacker.

Gerald Thomas absolutely much show up and take over the WR1 role for this passing game to have a chance.

I agree with you, but I just don't see how they do that. Outside of Gerald Thomas, none of our WRs can do anything with the ball once it's in their hands.

TEs look to as limited as the past few years. Again. Kasa looked really bad at blocking.

RBs have no speed at all. I better see some Abron soon. And how the hell did we not use Powell more?
 
How can we not be able to run the ball vs csu's weak dl?

How can a team not run the ball that's dedicated itself to doing so?

They talk big about jones and powell and hardly use powell, jones looked timid and this OL should be better than that performance on saturday.
 
The outcome of the game was decided on two plays. First was the muffed punt in the final minute of the first half. This gave CSU their second turnover in just a handful of plays. Instead of going into half with a comfortable 11 point half time lead, it allowed CSU a touchdown and all of the momentum going into halftime.

The second play was the 4th and goal designed pass from the 1/2 yard line. Instead of using a high percentage run play such as a sneak, the coaches opted to get cute and completely destroyed the momentum CU had from the CSU turnover and denied Colorado a 5 point 4th quarter lead.

Both completely the coaches fault.
 
Loved the writeup Nik!!! Your analysis and Sean's analysis on Rivals is spot on. Both are extremrely critical of EB and question whether JE will have the gonads to pull the string on him. I am also very critical of Marshall who I think stinks along with Brookhart. Brookhart does not have the skills to coach at this level and Marshall just does not have the drive anymore. Have to be able to recruit and also coach up the players you recruit and these two guys have done neither. I am in favor of firing Brookhart now and prehaps even Marshall. JE needs to shake up this group or he risks getting canned.
 
Nice work Nik. Painful to face such a reality again this year. I was really hoping the Buffs would be a nice surprise to all the naysayers. I was hoping Embree, who I think is true blue and 100% committed to the program would prove worthy of the faith I had in him. At this point I'm just left hoping you are not writing the same kind of blog after the Buffs play Sac State. Sad a game like the next one should be something you even have to worry about.
 
Really a great summary + analysis and I agree with all your points.There is no excuse for the coaches performance - as bad as anything, the continued inability to adjust at the half or during the game.But, once Polk got hurt, we had 3 freshman back there, clearly missing the leadership and knowledge Polk provided all thru camp. It was too easy for McE and co. I like it that Embree isn't using that as an excuse and is backing his playersGo Buffs

Nice work man. I cant sugarcoat what I saw, we are in deep ****. I thought these guys would at least show some toughness, I saw a worried team, no push up front. I hated the goal line playcall and you cant throw it in the stands on 4th down, gotta make a play, the te was there but he didnt see him I guess. In Webb's defense, he took a beating. I feel bad about getting mad at DD, dude was just trying to make a play. Returning punts isnt easy, we probably shouldnt have had anybody back. Hindsight is 20/20 tho, best thing to do is move on, fix what we can and dont quit now.
 
Like everyone else, I agree with most of what Buffnik says. I don't know what to think. It was a poor performance, particularly the second half. We need to see significant improvements or we'll have a hard time winning any games in conference play. The optimist in me notes that:

(1) If DD Goodson doesn't drop that punt there's very little chance that CSU wins.
(2) Tony Jones should be less tentative going forward with the first game out of the way.
(3) Christian Powell will probably get more touches going forward.
(4) Webb should continue to develop chemistry with the WRs.
(5) Gerald Thomas should gain confidence and he looks the part.

On the other hand:

(1) The O-line looks no better than it looked last year. I don't even want to think what good D-lines will do to them.
(2) Webb was inaccurate for much of the game, even for some of the completions.
(3) The D looked solid, but CSU's offense is one of the worst we'll face all season so it's hard to know how good the D really is.
(4) Gerald Thomas looks like the only WR that can stretch the field.

Overall, I'm worried, but will wait to see how we look the next couple of weeks. Sac State is obviously a must-win. I'd now classify Fresno State as a must-win. It'll be very interesting to see how the team performs on the road in Fresno.
