Staff Shake Up

I'm not the only one who is concerned about the capability of this staff. It isn't just losing a football game, even to little brother last week or little sister this week. It isn't even losing 10 games or wherever we are now. Everyone recognized that we (the players and staff) would have to put our ashes together to fly again, after the coach-who-must-not-be-named, debacle.

Causes of Concern:

  1. It took the coaching staff 9 months or longer to determine that our team lacked basic knowledge about fundamentals and technique.
  2. Embree decided that the Utah game was going to be a magical turning around point of the program, and that this year we would suddenly became a bowl team.
  3. Embree decided to install a no huddle offense when both our offense and defense couldn't do the basics reliably. Blocking and picking up blitzes is far more important than a slight advantage of no huddle...
  4. The offensive playcalling has been atrocious and isnt' using the limited talent we have very effectively. Being predictable gives the advantage to the defense. The staff doesn't seem to recognize that.
  5. The defensive playcalling has been suspect: perhaps it is too complicated as a poster suggested; perhaps it is inexperience; perhaps it is bad coaching and practice. Hard to determine at this point of the season.
  6. Some of the recruiting decisions are hard to explain and/or justify. Overall though, last years class was (very) good.

I think we can see the differences in personality and temperament between Embree and Boyle. Boyle is an ENFP and it shows with his leadership--developing a bond with players and recruits and empowering them. Embree is most likely an ESTJ and it shows with his strong organizational skills, but inability to think strategically and empower and motivate his players. (for the record hawkins was an ESFP, which is pretty unsuited to coaching or being in charge of most anything)

Embree has done a very good job in identifying talent and the kind of mentality we need as football players (at least with the limited evidence we have so far)

I think Marshall isn't pulling his weight even with our young/mediocre talent. We seem much worse than last year, in almost all OL positions. If players were just getting beat, I can understand that. Having experienced players constantly missing assignments is on Marshall/Embree.

EB is not a strategic thinker and seems totally unsuited to be an offensive coordinator. His play calling is totally predictable and not maximizing our limited talent at all.

I think the special teams has improved considerably, so brookhart probably gets a pass in my book.

Brown is a great recruiter and coach; I'm not sure if he is doing or is capable of being a preeminent coordinator.

Kennedy and Scherer and Cabral seem to be doing well, given what they have on their plates.

My conclusion is that Marshall should be given an ultimatum to get things fixed in the next few weeks, at the very least. I think we need to hire a new OC. I think EB should take more responsibility for recruiting, especially in CO.

I would make these changes before deciding to fire Embree and having to go through another year or two of recruiting shakeup. It is very rare for a single individual to have all the knowledge and skills to be a head coach; it is a similar skill set to that as president. It requires a staff of people with a strong mix of skills and strengths. Maybe Embree doesn't understand this, which could perhaps be the most damning thing of all. I think we can measure this by how he conducts himself over the next week(s) and how he responds.

I think firing Embree this season could seriously undermine our position as a football school. I'm curious about all your thoughts about how this proposition would/could play out.

I think firing Embree this season could seriously undermine our position as a football school. .

Wait what? CU is a football school? We have 2 losses against FCS opponents in last 7 years. That's not a football school.

And exactly what is Cabral doing that is so good to you?

The receivers looked horrible against an FCS school. No separation. Fire Marshall.

I don't get what happened to Bienemy. He called some good games last year. This year, nothing.

I'm back from the game too. And like our coaching staff, I have no clue where to begin.

Just some of the pathetic stats I noted:

Webb: 12/24 160 yds 6.7 YPA
Sac St QB: 25/37 311 yds 8.3 YPA

CU outgained by 130 yds

CU defense: 1 sack, gave up nearly 470 yds

Both EB and Brown should be titled uncoordinators. 2 weeks in a row, they've demonstrated no idea how to counterpunch. CSU and Sac St both made adjustments that EB and Brown could not counter.

Offensively, it's, well, more than offensive. The offense lines up in formation, and snaps the ball. Sac St, just like CSU, takes one look at the formation, adjusts, and comes flying. I could swear I saw barely any formation changes or men in motion (outside of a WR moving from wide to the slot) when CU had the ball. The backs stay in the same spot, the TEs stay in the same spot, and the defense comes crashing in. Barely any motion or formation changes--am I wrong? Nothing to keep the D off balance.

Webb seems like a good kid. But the accolades coming out of camp were wrong: He's not accurate, not even close. Maybe Wood & Hirschman make mistakes in practice, but really, could they be much worse than 12/24 160 yds against an FCS defense???? I think the coaches look at Webb as a game manager, but I think show me a game manager, I'll show you a coach playing not to lose.

Why did Gerald Thomas only get 3 touches today? He went for 15+ when he did touch the ball.

CU turtled in the 4th Q. Played not to lose, hoping to win--just what JE said about the players when he took over.

Like I said, I'm just like the coaching staff, I don't know where to begin.

Seems like he is constantly producing a stream of play makers at linebacker. Rippy was a stud before getting injured this year, Major has been solid since his injury, now Webb looks like THE defensive difference maker. All the coaches mention how far Daigh has come (not that thats worth anything anymore). Not to mention Jordon Dizon, Shawn Tufts, Chad Brown, Matt Russell, Jayshon Sykes and others I cant think of of the top of my head. In the state this program is in, Cabral keeps running out a group more than competent. AND, as a head coach two years ago he beat Snyder's KSU, which is pretty good (no, I'm not campaigning for Cabral to be the next HC at CU).

This Year's LB's are weak and Dizon hasn't been a Buff in 5 yrs. AGain Cabral living on his past. Time to move on

My thoughts exactly

CSU got whipped today by North Dakota State. CU is not just bad, we are one of the very worst programs in the country. Smart money is on an 0-12 season which is disastrous.

I really fear that even if we did clean house, who the hell is going to want this job? Even Dave Logan would probably be screening his calls to avoid Bohn.

I'm desperate now - call Petrino, Tressel, or any other scumbag that wins, I don't care anymore. If the admin doesn't have any pride in this program anyway, then we may as well be dirty if it means we'll win every now and then.

Sometimes, it is good to have fresh ideas. We need more creative thinkers as OC and DC. Top OC and DC, no more cheap hires.

I don't really think I am for firing the staff right now. Fire Bohn, he is the one who keeps making all these hires. Typically ADs get to hire ONE football coach, maybe two if they are lucky. Get rid of Bohn and the new guy can wipe the slate clean. Besides, it isn't like you can just fire the whole staff with 10 games remaining, but if they don't pull out at least 4 wins they need to all be gone and that is looking like a done deal right now.
