An Open Letter to the CU Faithful

Good stuff Nik--as usual!

I always though JE should have 3 years too, but my mind changed after an embarrassing loss (CSU), a humiliating loss (Sac St), and now an historic, record setting loss (Fresno).

Administration has to see now that this staff was the wrong (by a mile) hire. Question is, will they do anything about it, or just trying and minimize the financial impact of a buyout. I'm terrified that we're stuck to the end of 2013 with the current staff.

Good stuff Nik. My only question. Are we going to get "The Case Against Bohn"? Seems like we should present both sides in that argument.

Nikk, always appreciate your work on this front. I feel so bad for the fans having to put up with this bull****.

CU football is dead. Until the admin/AD do something to prove their commitment to a winning program like going all in like 99% of the other Pac 12 teams have, this is what we are folks. We'll always go for the discounted option. We'll always be trailing in the arms race. We'll always have to walk on eggshells around the academics. I wish it was so easy to quit on the team you grew up loving but I'm just not sure where we go from here. If Embree is kept after going 0-12, 1-11, that is basically a big **** you to all the fans and diehards.

We lost to Cal State Fresno 69-14. SIXTY NINE to Fourteen!!!! That's like a varsity all-star team taking on a freshman squad. Good god.

The case against Bohn is short, here it is:

Since the day Bohn was hired, our most important and popular sport has sucked more and more balls and may field the worst team in CU history this year.

Not this week. Maybe at some point.

What I think it really comes down to is this:

Does the very fact that Mike Bohn is willing to work for a modest AD salary, deal with the issues CU has, work for the bosses he has, and not either leave for greener pastures or draw a line in the sand threatening to quit over some of the things that have happened... actually paint him as a personality who isn't the dynamic leader we need? But if that's the case, isn't it impossible for CU to get from an AD what the fans are clamoring for?

Are you trying to say Bohn is the best CU can do?

For now. Yes, I believe that. Why would someone take the CU AD job for 1/4 the salary he could earn at another BCS program when the job is so much more difficult? There aren't a lot of Billy Beane types out there.

Wow. Im shocked. We are now the ISU of the Pac12. Look out bottom, were planning on sticking around.

We can't match Iowa State's recent performance, its existing facilities or the fact that it has a football facilities plan funded for the future. We've even lost a couple recruiting battles to them. I wish that CU was in Iowa State's situation right now.

I feel like I've been punched in the gut.

I apologize for being dramatic. I never thought id see this day.
There's too much going through my head. Ill just sink into my depression now.

:scared2: We did?! Good lord.

We should definitely steal their coach. That guy can bring a program up.

Yeah. It hit me like a ton of bricks, too. I don't think people realize the situation for what it is. Everyone should take a look at the Clones to get an idea. We're not talking about one of the college athletics "haves" here.

ISU already had this:

http://www.cyclones.com/PhotoAlbum.dbml?&&&DB_OEM_ID=10700&PALBID=4580

And this:

And this:

http://www.cyclones.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=10700&ATCLID=541506

But felt that it was so far behind in the BCS arms race it needed to do this:

http://www.cyclones.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=10700&ATCLID=205158072

http://www.cyclones.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=10700&ATCLID=205362641

http://www.cyclones.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=10700&ATCLID=205428827

And this is mostly just for football. They also manage to have facilities for wrestling, gymnastics and swimming/diving.

Sigh.

I remember the times when we rolled teams like ISU and KU. Year in and year out. Looks like were now that team.

No coach is going to take this job looking at our AD, and admin. and if we get lucky, hell bail. I know most would love that, but I've never considered CU a stepping stone job. I guess my views need changing.

I have said the window is closing on this program for awhile. We are so far behind I don't know how we will catch up outside a Phil knight situation.

I agree that Bohn is in a ridiculous situation with the admin. However, his actions at the beginning of his tenure largely caused this disaster (We would have faced serious challenges regardless, undoubtedly, but a certain firing and hiring caused things to be much, much, much worse than they needed to be...) I just refuse to believe Bohn - the man I saw doing the cha-cha in the streets of SF in Hawk's 5th year - is the best we can do. He's tarnished.

We have no choice at so many positions... we just dont have anyone better.....
WR: we have no one else. what do you want the staff to do? mcculloch spruce ebner and GT.. there isnt anyone else. only speed is GT and he is a slot guy like ebner and spruce and mcculloch doesnt have the speed or ball skills to be a 1....
QB: this is all we have...theres nothing you can do.
Safety: Terrell smith shouldnt be a safety... too small, gets dragged by players when they reach second level... put jered bell in. bigger body. but thats all we have..

a lot of our problems are problems you cant solve by coaching... you put them in the best situation to succeed and we just dont have the players that will execute. next year. with P rich and Jeff thomas and the other WR coming in, that position will be COMPLETELY different. with Prich and JT outside and spruce and GT on the inside and some of those incoming Frosh. its a whole different dynamic at that position. a huge problem is no one can get open, makes QBs look worse than they are. as i said even if we go winless... we have to give embo next year... he is short on so many positions.

I don't think this year's team will be the worst in CU History. We've still got next year, and perhaps a 4th, too. I have faith! Then, the next coach will have all of the same "cupboard is bare/scorched earth" excuses.

No. I don't think this is going to be CU Football's worst year. I have faith.

Valid opinion. I know you're not alone, so I'm glad someone spoke up on this side.

All you say about the deficiencies of the roster is absolutely true. 2013 looks like a much better roster.

My strong opinion is that the deficiencies, though, are not "blow a 14-3 lead to CSU true" or "blow a 14-0 lead to Sac State true" or "get whipped 69-14 by Fresno State true". There is something fundamentally wrong with how the program is being run that goes beyond the clear shortcomings of this team. We're not talking about struggling during the @USC-@Oregon-Stanford stretch of the schedule.

The thing that gets me is that the 69 points is not the worst part. They went easy on us. They could easily have hung a hundred on us. And so can anyone we play from here on out.

And that us historic bad for any level of badness. That is coaching. Pure lack of coaching. This staff....God bless them for the Buffs they are......has to go. You don't EVER have a non BCS school show pity and throw third stringers in there on you and then blame it on anything but flat out incompetent coaching. And it saddens me that JE and company could not get it done. I wanted them to succeed.

Nik your knowledge of CU athletics is terrific. Whether or not CU is willing to follow the ideas you outline is the question. Most schools rely so much on their football program for funding so many other things you would think the admin would see the value of having a strong team that showed well. A team people were entertained by and wanted to invest in. Instead they seem to want to make a minimal investment, cross their fingers and hope it pays off big dividends.

I believe it would be best to keep Bohn around for a while. He has done some good here that is generally being overshadowed by an awful football season. I'm torn on Embree. The sentimental side of me hates to see it happen. I like the guy, I like EB, I like Brown, I like Cabral. I like what they stand for and I like what they represent. I know what is probably going to need to be done but I hate to see it happen. I am old enough to remember that Chuck Fairbanks was supposed to be a home-run hire when he was brought in so in and of itself a new staff is no guarantee of success. What did Michigan think they were getting when they brought in Rich Rodriguez?

Much has to change if the Buffs are going to see greatness again and to me that change has to start all the way at the top. As I've said before as long as the state government, university administration, Denver media, donors and a hefty percentage of the potential fan base see the Buffs as an "also ran" it will be tough to succeed.

If CU can't figure out that the financial impact of a buyout is far less than keeping Embree, then we are somehow in worse trouble. We are at the point of everything unravelling. The monumental season ticket holder support through the last 7 years is withering away. Furthermore, we have a generation of potential Buff fans pissed down the toilet due to inaction by CU. We are quite literally at a crossroads. CU needs to throw a ton of financial and political support CU football's way to right this ship.
