Yahoo front page "worst football team"

I am at the point where I am welcoming the negative press.

Hopefully CU administration will realize this is a ****ing embarrassment too which needs to be fixed.

Now they've modified the headline to ascribe it only to "former player Matt says..."

Yes. That helps a lot. I mean, only HE thinks that! Uh huh.

I sort of am too. When the anti-football segment (there is one, it's not as large as some people think - but it's definitely there) starts hearing their employer be made fun of on a regular basis, it may actually get their attention. When application numbers go down, it may get their attention. When they go to conferences, and get receive pity from the people in their field who do follow football, it may get their attention. Some of them will be impervious to it, but the simple fact is that no one enjoys being a laughingstock, for any reason.

They didn't want to be associated with a university that was "dirty" or one that "valued football more than academics," but now they will find out what it's like to be at a school that doesn't value football at all - and I suspect they won't like the derision and negative press they receive from that either. It may be a lesson that needed to be learned, and I have to hope that it helps in the long run. "Remember what happened our football team was terrible? We can't let that happen again."

Here's what wrong with that line of thinking. Those anti-football folks you mention won't think "Hey, we need to increase funding for football." They say "Cut football". However, these press clippings might just light a fire under Benson and Distephano.

They just dont care.

Nope, but there has to be somebody with the power, either financial or as a regent that does. I for one welcome the negative press, because it means that Colorado is still considered relevant. Nobody would care if CSU was terrible...because they have always been terrible. Honestly, this is a freaking layup golden opportunity for the administration to come out and say that change is coming.

Didn't know about sarcasm font? My point is if we go back to square one by getting rid of JE, we do exactly that, go back!

Would going back be an improvement? You don't double down when you should clearly fold.

Was this Hank's old username? Chicken hawk...

I think "going back" is what we all advocate. If I could go back to a time when giving up 69 points to Mountain West team didn't happen, I would.

I like to think the Dean of Admissions is gonna start saying something (I don't know if that current person has a pro or anti football slant), but numbers are going to start to get hit, and comments have to start percolating up. I can't imagine that any CU representative at any high school admissions fair in the country isn't going to start hearing comments and getting questions.

Pretty much any official representative is going to start hearing questions and jokes whenever they interact with the public. They don't want to talk about it. They don't want to hear those questions. They rebelled en masse when they had to deal with questions about "the scandal" and instituted some controls that probably in long run will be a good thing (and some that went a bit too far). They just wanted that "problem" and all those questions to go away. And they made them go away - they haven't been pressed on any football issues for a while. But now, they're going to start hearing it again, except instead of questions about recruiting sex parties, it's going to be about how terrible the team is, and "what does it feel like to have a football team that's 'the worst in college football?'"

They probably haven't been paying a whole lot of attention the last few years - and will only have a hazy "I thought we hired some bright up and coming coach from a lower level school and were close to bowl games and stuff" notion of what is going on. The "worst team in the country" will be a surprise - and they won't like it. They would rather answer questions about the experiments that this year's seniors are running, and how you'll be able to study beetles in Africa if you come to CU, so when negative football questions start coming in - they'll be pissed. In their ideal world, any football questions can be answered with "yes, we have a pretty good team and you can enjoy that on Saturday, but you can also insert their favorite academic pursuit while you're in Boulder." If that canned response doesn't work - they're annoyed.

As to the rank and file professors, in a former life I attended a few academic conferences, and believe it or not, football does get some talk (outside of presentations and such) - and it is sort of embarrassing to get ribbed for having a terrible football team. These are smart people, they know that "cut the team entirely" isn't an actual option, so "dear god, do whatever it takes to make this annoying embarrassment go away" actually becomes a priority.

So yes, national publicity as to our terribleness will hopefully end up being a good thing. At least that's my hope...

And IF we were in the Mountain West, we'd already have an 0-2 conference record, so what's your point?

We have resources and a history that shatters any Mountain West equivelant team. Simply look at our media deal before the Pac 12 Network is factored in. Look at our game attendance, our Butkus Awards, our Heisman trophy, our Division Championships and MAJOR Conference Championships. Look at how D1 A (I realize that's not how categorize teams anymore) teams are separated into AQ conferences and other than AQ conferences, i.e. "Haves" and "Have nots". Reserve your judgment on the fairness of the system, for a moment, and tell me if there's EVER an excuse to lose to a Mountain West team in the fashion that we did.

Seriously, I'm not sure if you're making my point or yours here. What's my point? You made it. We'd be 0-2 against a non-AQ conference.

Keeping Coach Embree will discourage future recruits and quality Coordinator upgrades. Nobody wants to be part of a national embarrassment. Only a bold move by our adminstration can stop the bleeding. Coach Embree is a great Buff. It's time to look elsewhere.

What are we going to lose by getting rid of Embo? Not much left to lose, except 9 more games. Turn the page, get a real coach in here, bring in a decent recruiting class (will be as good or better than Embree's anyways if he continues to lose), and build with the young guys that seem to pan out from last year's class. You get better in Year 2 with a normal coaching staff, and even if we remained equal as last year we wouldn't be griping. But this team is pathetic and it pains me to say so. Adios Embo!

While we are discussing the relative importance of negative press and a crappy a** football team on academics I can speak from a somewhat insider point of view. I have been a full-time academic professor for much of the past 10 years after graduating w/ my Ph.D. at CU...

I am currently a professor in South America and just yesterday saw an opening at Penn State. My first gut reaction was no way that school is tarnished. I wasn't even thinking about how painful it would be as a college football fan to watch another team suck as bad almost (for a while anyway) as the Buffs. It was just a brand thing-the PSU brand sucksl

I can't believe that if this continues that it won't also impact the CU brand amongst academics, even if they don't care about football. Of course we don't have known pedophiles so it won't be as bad as PSU but not good.

Whoever said no press is bad press never tried recruiting an 18 year old kid to the "worst football team"

Agreed. I was rooting for Fresno to run-up the score as much as possible. Going 0-12 and getting rid of our inept coach will be more benificial to this program in the long run then winning a couple games and having Embree stick around for another year.

And the recruiting process should be looking up HS sophs and juniors. 15-16-17 year olds. If this staff is waiting for 18-year-old decision makers, they'll find all of those committed to every other program.

This is what Sac State does - they have to wait until the dust is settled and all Div-1 schools sign their players, and the Sac State's of the world take up anything that's left over.

Teams should have 12-13-14 year old's in camps, as well. One measure of coaching greatness is the number of Repeats they get signed up for next-year camps. How many first-timers never return? How those players are doing in their own teams? It's not rocket science - it's just paying attention. But offering up Worst in any publicity campaign is pretty bad, folks.

Must win at Wash State. Must. Or "Worst Football In College" is going to be Embree's program for at least 10 weeks of prime-time sports-page history. Must win.

I hope Embree's satisfaction-with-effort against Sac State and Fresno is just deflective cover-ups for his personal fires inside.

Spot on, Boyd. BTW, is your nickname "Oil Can"?

Sadly no one at Colorado will care.

I've seen it described several times as most want the football team to quietly go about its business. Staying out of the headlines being the most important thing. By that description, they would be just fine with 4-7 wins a year, the occassional bowl, but staying in their little box.

Two things will get their attention and both deal with headlines in the paper:
1) Players getting arrested
2) A team so bad they are a national punchline

I hope that theory is right and this "wakes up" the general CU leadership to make a change that in this case, would be positive for the football program. It could even help the stadium expansion efforts when they realize we will be at the bottom of the league if we don't make this investment.
