Cody Hawkins speaks out

At least we were in contention for bowl berths when he and his dad were here, I never thought we would be worse than that.

Hate to say it, but Dan Hawkins is at least 3-3 right now with this years team

I truly hated to see him in games most of the time..... but damn the kid is still one of the classiest players I have ever seen come through CU. Even after the crap he went through and his dad getting fired he still is rooting for the buffs. Awesome guy! If only we could get his attitude into players with a little more athletic ability....

Glad to see Cody remaining supportive of the university, the coaches and his teammates like Aric Goodman.

Selling Nike products is a strange path to pursue a career in coaching.

Its disturbing and pathetic to hear about the threats and obscenities on his voice mail.

The voice mail messages

There's a big difference between being negative on a message board and sending texts or threatening emails/voicemails. That kind of stuff, especially when directed at the players, is unacceptable. Putting a "for sale" sign on Hawkins lawn, otoh, shows some level of creativity.

“Five fat bald guys would yell ‘You suck’ after some games,” Hawkins said. “The only thing that festers with me, though, is the obscene stuff that was directed at my family. I have a couple names written down of people, who if I saw today, I’d punch them in the face.”

He's a little bitter,can't say I blame him.

The Hawkins family weren’t the only goats, either. Cody remembers former kicker and roommate Aric Goodman clanking the posts left and right.“After he made that game-winner against West Virginia, I think he holds the all-time record for most goal post hits,” Hawkins said. “He never missed by much.”

Part of why,in my opinion, things didn't work.Close enough was good enough.(the article points out Goodman was 25-47 in his career at one time missing 8 straight. No way he should've been allowed to miss that many in a row,let alone keep the job as starter to have that many attempts.)

“They are on the right track and have tremendous coaches,” Cody says. “But it’s hard to hide from the negativity these days. Bill McCartney would not have won a national championship with this kind of negativity circling the program – I mean his first couple of years were not good. But now people can tweet at you and Facebook you; it’s hard to hide from it and stay focused on winning.”

He's got McCartney syndrome too.

“Right now, we’re bringing a knife to a gunfight. Oregon gets new uniforms every game. USC is surrounded by celebrities by the beach,” Hawkins said. “I mean the draw of the mountains won’t cut it anymore with $50 Southwest flights and Google Earth. Recruits want to be treated like rock stars with all that comes with it.”

This is an excuse not a reason.

Glad to hear he's happy and healthy working for Nike.I hope all his dreams come true (and he becomes rich and gives $$ to his alma mater).

Couple of comments in response to the article...

1. Nobody should be leaving nasty voice mails on a players cell phone. Ever. Criticism of play on a message board is fair game and comes with a scholarship for the "kids who want to be treated like a rock star". Allbuffs self polices the board pretty well in this regard, although losing begets boorish behavior.
2. Yes, Cody, if you don't make a sale, your boss does indeed yell at you. They actually fire you if you make too few of them.
3. I feel bad that Cody thinks his dad's firing was his fault. It was not. Cody handled himself well in a tough situation. People questioned his size and arm strength, but not his heart.
4. I wonder who is on the punch in face list. I think Rugged is on there.
5. Despite it all, I'm glad he still cheers for the buffs.

Pretty candid and can appreciate his opinion.

That section on Aric Goodman is painful though. Close misses are still misses.

I'm not.

Agree with second sentence. Wrong on first.

I was careful to qualify my statement. I assumed that he knows you...it's just that he doesn't know you well enough if he hasn't reached the desire to punch you. I'm surprised I'm explaining this to you.

He may not be tall enough to punch Rugged in the face.

Please. Give me a break. The wins won't come until the negativity stops? I am an old fart, but I saw a lot of coaches and programs who won by riding the players and insisting for the very best out of them, even if that menat telling them the job they were doing sucked. One of the best learning oppourtunities I ever had was when my boss came in and told me the job I was doing sucked and told me to get a notepad and take notes on how to do it better. This Zen positive crap doesn't work. That explains a lot of the "lay down and take the beating" attitude you see. Gee there is always tomorrow...what a load of crap.

I sure didn't enjoy watching Cody lose games but he didn't deserve the threats from lowlife cowards. Now his dad is the one who should feel the hate from fans, not him. It's tough to see positives in CU all the way around.

If kids want to be treated like rock stars, they better have rock star talent. I mean, USC's stars get treated like rock stars, but I doubt their walk ons do... I wasn't on campus during the Darrell Scott years, but I'm assuming he was treated like a rock star, wasn't he?

up until about the third game, yeah.

Absolutely 100% you are correct. It's all the difference in the world. Not a big deal when people vent on boards, but crossing the line and going directly to a player or coach is outrageous and probably an indication of deep mental/emotional problems.

Hard to believe, but I agree with this.

And, it's not so much negativity as it is telling the truth.
