One of my players (I coach a 16U soccer team) spoke to me about college and where he should look. It then occured to me that I would NOT consider CU as a viable option if my listed included large state schools.

I was discussing with this kid and he immeditely said:

I wont go to Penn State and any other school that wont have a chance at big time football games in the next few years. He watches gameday and is convinced that being in the top 25 will make his college experience that much better.

I agree with him.

This is a disaster.... and I now agree with those who say that it is NOT an Embree problem. It really is an administration problem.

It could be an Embree problem, but it appears to me to be most certainly an administrative problem.

The Embree problem is really just a product of the administrative problem. Eliminate the Embree problem, and you've merely treated a symptom that will pop its head up again. Probably sooner rather than later.

I doubt many kids actually put a high priority on football when choosing their school. It's a nice bonus for some, but I highly doubt it's a real factor in making the choice. So many other obvioius things would come ahead of that: location, academic reputation, field of study, cost, family ties, size of the school, commuter school vs. "college town", friends, etc.

There are approx 2,000 4-year colleges/universities in the USA. Only a small % have big time football.

FWIW, I began at a small liberal arts school...hated it and transferred. I had three schools identified for transfer. CU, UW and LSU...draw your own conclusions.

Since there are 2k schools and maybe 2% of those schools have big time football, i think it's safe to say that most people didn't choose their college based on big time football.

You're very wrong if you don't think a lot of kids choose schools based on athletic success.

That's a lot of competition for CU. Anytime you can market the University positively, as you can with athletics, it makes a difference.

I did. My Mom and counselors were trying to get me to go Mines for engineering. I made my decision to go to CU in 96. Football was a BIG part fo that.

Few do, but most don't. It's a fact if you look at the numbers--the majority of students chose schools that aren't successful in terms of athletics. Go take a survey of your fellow students. Go look at surveys. Study the facts.

I believe there is information available regarding the declining standard of CU admissions. Maybe it's a coincidence, or maybe there's a correlation.

Anybody out there in admissions hook me up via PM?

We don't need every single promising out of state student to have a hard on for CU because of football. If winning athletics was an important factor to even 5% of the potential top out of state students, CU would see big improvements in applications.

This

Successful football would lead to better academics at CU due to the increased exposure which results in more applications.

The facts are that CU's biggest application upticks have occurred in unison with football successes.

The biggest 24 hour non-deadline period for applications in CU's history was after we beat #3 Oklahoma in 2007.

I'd feel more confident in this information if you could either:

a. State your credentials on the matter.

b. Ended your statement with "FACT!"
