Has an AD ever been given the opportunity to hire three head football coaches?

I thought maybe Joe C at OU might have, but alas, no. Then I thought maybe Swarbrick at ND, but that's not the case, either. I thought that perhaps the Michigan AD might have, but again, nope.

I'm at a loss. How many chances do ADs usually get at hiring the right head football coach? Two seems to be the magic number, IMO. I said at the time that they hired Embree that the hire was made to give Mike Bohn some cover in case it didn't work out.

I don't want MB anywhere near the next HC hire. I don't wnat BB or Dr. Phil anywhere near it either. I doubt I will get my wish.

Mal Moore Alabama... Dennis Franchione, Mark Price, Mike Shula, Nick Saban all since 1999

mark price was a pg from georgia tech. mike price was the hooker nailing weekend coach at Bama. after being at wazzou and then later UTEP.

Mike Garrett was USC's athletic director from 1993 through 2010.

He hired John Robinson, then fired him. He hired Paul Hackett, then fired him. His 3rd coaching hire was Pete Carroll, who did pretty well, cheating aside.

Dan Guerrero has been UCLA's athletic director since 2002.

In 2003, he hired Karl Dorrell. In 2007, he fired Karl Dorrell. In 2008, Guerrero hired Rick Neuheisel. In 2011, Guerrero fired Neuheisel. In 2012, Guerrero hired Jim Mora, Jr.

Do we actually consider Embree a Mike Bohn hire?
I understand the sentiment...Buffs4Life, Mac and all the other interests, but if MB is such a pussy willow that you can't call this his hire, why the **** do we even call him the AD? Grow a spine MB.

if you was getting 250 mil practice facility contingent on hiring a coach like embree...would you have done it?

What practice facility - sounds like he got taken for a ride

My impression is that he was forced to take a seat on the decision to hire Embree. He was justly blamed for HaLkins and his extension. Obviously those who were primary decision makers here did an even worse job. I think Bohn committed to making it work at CU and has done what he could to make that happen. He hired Boyle, which has been a major win. I've met the guy a couple times and liked him. I believe many of the issues faced here are over his head. I'd like to see him ultimately decide who the next coach is.

First, I would have done my due diligence to see if the promise was any good before I even considered it. Second, no, if I were the AD I would not let a money man run the show. Third, if I were only allowed to run the AD in a half-assed, try to please everybody, run every decision up the committee flagpole, and then be required to fall on my sword when the decision was inevitably bad fashion, I would resign. My exit would probably be noisy.

MB should have resigned when HaLk was forced on him for an extra year. Now he just looks like a tool of the admin. and no serious program is ever going to hand the keys to a guy who functioned as a yes man. That is too bad. I think MB is a solid administrator, and if left to run his shop, he might be pretty good at it. But he appears from the outside to be too much of a weak hand, so he gets pushed around, and is required to take the heat while the people who really make decisions sit back in their ivory towers. JMO.

I think the guy at Texas has three hires. Mackovic, Brown and the guy before Mackovic.

I think the point is not too many AD's get to hire a 3rd HC after two miserable failures.

I am not trying to give Mike Bohn a pass for the Embree hire. I have heard many things on both sides here and I'm not sure how to consider it.

i also think you are full of **** if you say you wouldnt take that practice facility

Bohn wasn't given the opportunity to hire 2.

Anyone here want to try to argue that Bohn directed the coaching search last time by setting the criteria we were looking for and how the interview process would be conducted?

He was basically given a shot to land Les Miles and failing that it had to be another Buff.

Options: Mac, Embo, EB and Cabral.

Mac = impossibility. The political will wasn't even there to fight to have him marshal the homecoming parade that year.

Of the final 3, Embree actually had a plan for how he would do things and who he would hire. That dramatically separated him from the other candidates so Bohn was told that Embree was the guy the committee wanted.

Sometimes it's hard to be a CU fan, folks.

I think you need some real world experience. Bohn has cast himself in such a way I would be shocked if any big time program would want him to run their program. The second you abdicate your authority as head of any organization to someone else, for whatever the reason, you become expendable. You want an example? Who runs the OSU AD, the AD or Pickens? The AD is irrelevant. Maybe you would work in that kind of atmosphere, I would not.

If there was serious interest in funding a practice facility, there are ways to do it without giving up the prime strategic decisions of your department to someone else outside your organizational structure. It looks to me like Bohn got played in a big way, because I see no practice facility nor even an announcement. If he hired Embo because he was going to get the facility $$$, he has shown again the negotiating skills that got a one off game with Toledo, at Toledo, with four nights rest.

I heard on koa yesterday that Phil D had more input on the hiring than bohn.

Maybe third time is the charm!

There is a lot of truth to this statement. Texas went through two losers to get to Mack. Bama churned through guys to get to Saban. Florida when through a guy or two to get to Meyer. USC went through several guys to get to Carroll. Notre Dame when through countless guys to get to BK.

I think this is the formula. Nobody has a crystal ball. You do your research, use best judgement, then pull the trigger. You're more likely to miss than hit. The KEY is to know when to cut bait. That is everything.

This is what worries me about Bohn. I don't think he does proper research and already has a guy he has in mind from the start. His pool of interviewees is usually very small/lacking excitement. While I admit I was pumped for the Hawkins hire, I remember Boise fans coming on the DP and DC and telling us we hired the wrong guy. The word was that Peterson was the real brains behind Boise. If the fans knew this, then how did Bohn not find this out? I have no faith in him at all to anyone competent.

You could probably say that about every coach that didn't work out. The same guy who hired John Blake is teh same guy who hired Stoops. The big mistake is holding on too long.

No, that's not correct. John Blake was hired by Steve Owens. John Blake was fired by Joe Castiglione. Joe Castiglione then hired Bob Stoops.
