Yahoo Sports: Jon Embree is "in trouble"

Yahoo Sports' Pat Forde says Embree is "in trouble"

Colorado (11). Coach on the rocks: Jon Embree. Why: The Buffaloes took a chance on a very inexperienced coach and the result has been a 4-18 record, with this year's team far worse than last year's. Eleven years after playing in a BCS bowl, Colorado is the worst team in a big-six conference, being outscored by 30 points a game. How good is the job: Iffy. There is a spectacular campus to sell, but not enough in-state recruits to sell it to. And there aren't enough big-dollar donors willing to push Colorado forward in the facilities arms race.

President Benson is on the record saying HCJB is doing an outstanding job. He'll get at least one more year to turn this thing around.

That was two months ago. Mike Bohn is on record publicly LAST WEEKEND saying that what is going on is completely unacceptable and major changes are coming. Try to keep up.

I didn't read the whole article. He identifies Fresno State's coach as a potential replacement for Embree.

I do think as more and more national reports surface in this regard, it will be tougher for Benson, et al. to maintain their position.

Circumstances change. You can't keep a coach who's getting blown out like this on a weekly basis.

The fan base doesn't need to make the decision on Embree or any other CU coach.

What we need is confidence that:

1. The infrastructure (facilities and departmental resources) is in place for a CU coach to have the best opportunity for success.
2. A strong AD is in place, unfettered by political meddling, to make aggressive moves and coaching decisions based on the right criteria (i.e., who will deliver wins while being a solid representative of the university).

Put that in place and I can live with a decision one way or the other on Embree. Keep him with major staff changes? I'm on board. Fire him and go a different direction? I'm on board.

But I can't have confidence in any decision when I don't trust the decision-makers or the process. Let's fix the real problem.

DeRuyter is a DC whiz. Get the right OC (Tony Franklin I am loooking at you) and CU could be respectable again fairly quickly.

#1 will probably come with time. I expect some facilities advancements will be forthcoming over the next few years.

#2 is not likely to ever come at CU, at least not for the foreseeable future.

There are "real problems" and there are "fixable problems." Sometimes the real problems are not fixable problems.

DeRuyter is a really good defensive coach and seems to be doing pretty good at Fresno. I'm sure we could do a lot worse.

Would DeRuyter leave Fresno State after just one year? Actually, what I'm most curious about is whether Embree would fire most of his staff to keep his job or rather go down with them. Will be interesting to see what happens.

Couldn't agree more.

This has to happen if CU is participate in major college athletics moving forward. The root of the problem exists in the structure and autonomy of the AD. The AD needs to be empowered to set the direction and put a plan forward and it has to be free of the political wrangling that has gone on in the past. If not, we are going to remain in a reactive death spiral. We as a fan base can and should organize to have an impact on the direction.

I'm hearing rumors that Shanahan is probably gone from the Redskins at the end of this year. Any chance he wants to move home to CO and coach the buffs?

He's a big name that could attract recruits. I don't know if he can coach at the college level or how good of a closer he is with recruits but his name will sure open a lot of doors. I also think he will be pretty decent at the X's & O's.

No, no, no. I am sick of watching the utter futility of implementing a WCO/pro style Offense at the college level. No, no, no.

A perhaps more likely option given the fact that Embree is probably going to be back next year, is little Shanny for OC?

I cannot see that happening. Guys who have the NFL in their blood seem to stay there, don't they?

God I hope not. We need someone who is a proved winner against the PAC12.

I've just learned to expect very little, easier when it blows up. Not hard to see that the powers that be don't give a ****. Jmho.

I fully expect Shanahan to be the 'skins coach next year.

"took a chance on a VERY inexperienced coach"? Very? As in Zero is very nearly equal to One? Hmmm...relatively speaking, I suppose.

Fortunately, Embree has tons of experience now. Relatively speaking.

He's happy where he is. It took him into his late 40's to get a good coaching gig, he won't jump ship just because someone waves a nice paycheck.

How much longer can the AD continue take hearing from the PAC 12, fan base, boosters, and alum, how our team has become the league doormat?
