Those of you locally may have seen the new Boulder Weekly.

The cover is: "Colorado football players collected scholarship money despite legal troubles"

Focus is on the minimum requirements for the Presidential Scholarship at CU, how guys like Katoa did not meet the requirements, but Hawkins renewed them anyway.

Hopefully this doesn't have legs. This is all we need to put the cherry on top of this season.

Oh noes, Maiva got caught with a MIP. Who gave a **** what happened to him after he left Boulder. That journalist didn't make a strong argument in that case.

The others...well he nailed it. FFS, Hawk was as bad as Urban Meyer sometimes, but he couldn't win to save his life.

Since the NCAA knows CU could care less about football, I'm sure they will be unusually harsh to set an example.

It seems to me that the problem wasn't whether or not the scholarships were awarded properly, but rather the decision was left solely to the head coach. What kind of moronic system is that? I don't have a problem with the head coach picking candidates for the scholarship, but qualification and ongoing review of the standards should have been charged to someone (or even a review committee) on the academic side of the equation. Yet another example of the bureaucratic cluster**** that is our alma mater.

To me that is more of Hawk's incompetance than anything - if you are using the thing as a back-door vehicle to cut scholly costs why not give it to the best students who are also from out of state? Why give it to the discipline risks?

Because he was doing things the right way....

WTF...the local media really doesn't have anything better to do than dig up this crap from 5 years ago when we are already the worst D1 school in the country? In any other community the local media would be screaming for the heads of everyone in the admin, instead we get them actively trying to kick us into the grave and shovel dirt on top. That reporter who broke the Penn State story just got hired by CNN, so apparently every small time hack is going to be looking for dirt in their CFB programs as their ticket to the big time.

I literally can't take any more of this crap. WTF do we need to do to have some luck and turn around the !@#%show that is laughingly called CU football. I will literally pay for the exorcism or voodoo ritual or whatever the hell needs to be done.

I can see the headlines now, NCAA to punish worst cheating team in college football. They do not take their cheating seriously though, cheating and still worse than the death penalty SMU Mustangs!

We are so dumb. The AD literally cannot do a damn thing without shooting themselves in the foot. If this was really just to cut down on AD costs, why didn't they just cherry pick the kids who got these across the AD and make sure they were all high academic performers with no behavior issues. Doesn't it all come from the same bucket? If so, there is no reason to necessarily give it to football players, particularly ones with a history of issues.

Maybe we can leverage this to make some serious Admin changes. If Bohn and the upper admin knew, thinking DiStefano, maybe we can force some real change. I know it is a pipe dream, but a man can dream.

It is simply amazing how much a good majority of people in Boulder despise football.

Seems like it was a backdoor way to get the school's administration to subsidize football. It was not in anyway beating the NCAA system (ie the limit on 85 schollies), so there should be no sanctions or repercussions from the NCAA end of things. Furthermore, Hawkins (and any head coach) has the ability to revoke athletic scholarships on a yearly basis, so he didn't have more or less power over athlete performance/behavior with these academic scholarships than with true athletic ones. Someone in the administration had to sell Hawkins on these because to him, it seems like a wash either way.

The only purpose of these seems to be to get some athletic scholarships off the AD books and move to a different slush fund. Only somewhat shady because subsidies like this are done at so many schools and done above board. Clearly an attempt to make the AD's financial situation look better than it was.

But here's the incredibly stupid thing about it - and why some dumb arse should get fired - they gave the academic scholarships to incredibly bad students. Why not find the best students on the team? Hell, why stop at the football team? Find the best students on the ski team. The women's volleyball team. Any other team where the chances of someone failing out of school or worse are less. It would have had the same effect on the the athletic departments bottom line (which was the goal right?), and wouldn't raise the same red flags of impropriety. Since a lot of these non-revenue sports essentially use football profits for their operations anyway, it's actually less deceptive.

Read the whole article:

Hilliard adds, “My understanding is that in the awarding of these, everything was reported to the NCAA through our regular NCAA reporting processes, that there have never been any irregularities cited in our reporting on these matters.”

Fired? No way. Let's just see how much more this dumb arse can screw up first. Signed CU.

Read the whole article:

I did read the article. I was trying to make the same point as GoBeers, there is no reason why they couldn't have cherry picked the vast majority of these schollies to go to the high academic achievers across all sports and let the AD foot the bill for the kids that were academically marginal or had behavioral issues under standard athletic scholarships. I didn't imply that we giving kids money they couldn't have under the NCAA rules. Really the only thing that makes the schollies questionable is the academic component and if you agree with the interpretation that there is some sort of morals clause attached.

Does the scholarship money go towards books, tuition, room & board, or is the recipient getting cash than can be used on hookers, blow and TransAms?

Do presidents scholarship recipients get both the athletic money and the academic scholarship?

Are state funds used, or not?

I'm just not seeing the scandal.
With 100 recipients per year, sure seems that there is some cherrypicking going on by focusing on sipili and maiva.
