Utah Game

Those who chose to not go to the game missed an effort by this team that has been missing all too often this season. Unfortunately the team still made too many mistakes to be successful. Utah had four scores off turnovers. This one certainly falls in the category of a win left on the field. Five turnovers, a blocked FG attempt, a kick-off return for a touchdown and only lose by 7 points - it is easy to come up with scenarios where this game could of and should of been won.

The defense played better just like they did in the first half against Washington. And for the whole game they never lost the effort, but the defense started giving up big running plays in the second half (it seemed like 15 yards an attempt for awhile). It did not seem like any big Utah adjustment but CU just not getting to the ball carrier. Once again the defense forced zero turnovers.

The CU offense moved the ball for one of the few times this season. Hirschman can make throws that Webb can just not make. But he still makes bad decisions. I am baffled by the fact this coaching staff did not give the backups more meaningful snaps in some of those early Pac-12 games. Maybe Hirschman would of been more polished at this point in the season if he had taken more snaps. HIrschman actually grew the most of all the QBs. Jordan Webb should not see the field again unless there is some disaster at QB.

The crowd was good all things considered and most stayed until the end.

A sad season.

+1 on your assessment of the game

+1 on Hirsch as well. It's hard to ignore what he might have looked like by this game if he had had half a dozen starts under his belt i.e. the mistakes....

The real question: if we had won, would the 50 students that stuck around to the end have rushed the field?

Utah started to run well after Josh Tupou got hurt. Buffs really missed him after the injury.

+2 BnG. The kids really put out the effort. A really tough loss. One thing, I realize that I always expect the worst and my expectations usually come to fruition. On the kickoff, after our return, I told my daughter, "we will screw this up." And that's the thing: We have gotten into the mindset of always expecting the worst. And that really sucks. It is way more fun to always expect the best.

The backups (Hirschman, Wood) have combined for 170 attempts combined over the last two seasons of 25 games and mostly blowout losses. Very poor management of the quarterback situation. Still do not think any of the three QBs that played this season are more than mediocre.

The defense played admirably, but still cannot stop read option.

Who is Read Option? Did we recruit him?

So 3 games we could have won would put us at 4-8, in the area most of us had at the beginning of this season.

How much difference is there in recruiting for a 1-11 team vs. a 4-8 team?

All I saw was that we're probably more talented than Utah is. Which is weird because everyone keeps saying that we're less talented than most FCS teams.

I agree.

But, being more talented than Utah is not saying much. I was surprised to see how ridiculously bad they are. Of course, we're worse, sooo...

I agree B+G, you could see them giving it everything they've got. That's what I want to see. Although you could argue that all three phases of the game were improved, all three phases had their opportunity to put this game away and failed.

Defense: Actually stopped Utah in the first half. We had to play 2 halves, 2 point conversion.
Offense: Actually moving the ball semi consistently. 4 Turnovers, bad sack to move us closer to out of FG range.
ST: Roughing the punter for first TD, some great punts, KO return for TD. Horsecaller 15 yard penalty, too many guys on FG, blocked FG, some bad punts, KO return for TD.

Utah tried to give this game to us. We didn't capitalize. But in the end, it was entertaining for me. One of the few games where I really felt that passion from the field.

Who's the "middle-aged" dip**** that the DP said yelled at GT for dropping passes after the game? That is the most pathetic thing I've heard of and they should be banned from future games. Kid plays hard, and it was Embree's/Bienemy's dumbass mistake to call a fourth down play to the guy that has the least sure hands.

I got more pissed than the loss when I read that

....oops, I didn't see there is a thread addressing this already....

I just think it's funny how a team of somewhat similar talent level was able to:

-Keep it within 10 against USC, 7 with UCLA, and 10 against Arizona.
-While also steamrolling WSU and throttling Cal.

I just do not see our talent level as being better than Utah. I would say our Oline is probably close but they have a distinct advantage at RB, Dline, WR. Their QB was not great but did not turn over ball 4 times. Cu's Dline and DBs have talent but it is still in the development stages.

I was completely unimpressed with Utah's wide receivers. Soft and no big play ability.

Maybe not better, but at least on par? Which is a far cry from the FCS level talent every apologist was claiming we had.

We turned the ball over 5 times to their 1. We somehow stayed in the game. A team that doesn't belong on the same field talent wise doesn't do that.

yet we still played off them in the 4th quarter. that last first down they got where crawley was 15 yards deep... sigh.

Watched some of this game when it repeated. The overall effort looked much better against a decent Utah team. If this kind of improvement was seen in week 3 and not week 13, things would be looking a lot different. That's my main beef with this coaching staff...no improvement.

I got around to watching the game late last night, after the outdoor christmas lights were hung.

That was an entertaining game. It sucked that we lost, but at least we weren't blown out. Utah took advantage of turnovers and deserved to win. If the Buffs played 4 quarters of competitive football in every game this season, like they played yesterday, but still finished 1-11, I'd be on-board with keeping Embree around. But yesterday's defeat does little to paper over those blowouts to Fresno, UCLA, Arizona, ASU, Washington, Oregon, and USC. Nor does it excuse the losses to Sacramento State and CSU-FC.

That was my favorite 3rd quarter of Buff football all season. I sure hate seeing the Buffs go out like that.
