10-2 in first season with A&M in first season in the SEC. Redshirt Freshman QB w/ good chance for Heisman.

Man I wish we would have gotten Sumlin! But it's not too late for Bohn to can Embree and bring in someone of his caliber.

I liked Sumlin too but we missed the boat after Hawkins' 4th year, which was the only moment when I think we had a real shot to land HCKS.

Why does everybody post this? He and his wife hated Boulder the whole week they were here and left for OU.

My suspicion is that many on this board would have railed against his "gimmick offense" were his name floated at the time of the Embree hire.

Btw, I also think that A&M is playing probably the best football in the country right now. They lost to LSU and Florida by less than 10 points combined and they've improved considerably since those losses. I think they have some seniors on the O-line, but if they can replace those guys they'll be very good next year and beyond. Sumlin definitely looks like the real deal.

i'm a little surprised by the career path of Sumlin. he never called the plays at OU...that's Kevin Wilson...and he parlays taht job into following Briles at Houston....we he inherits a very good qb and a system. then, he gets the ATM job while Kevin Wilson gets the Indiana job. yikes. Manziel drops out of the sky as a phenom....and the ags roll the tide and the SEC mostly.

maybe Sumlin is THAT good. i don't know.

If you look at how different Manziel is from Case Keenum at Houston I think it shows that Sumlin is at the very least good at making adjustments based on his players. No question Manziel is a phenom, but if I remember correctly, Keenum was pretty much a pocket passer with limited mobility at Houston and we has highly successful as well.

yeah, just for fun....let's turn it around...Briles makes Keenum. right? and then he makes RG III at Baylor...

RG ain't a statue QB.

i think minus maybe Leach all the spread people want a spread option. a guy who can run and still throw it in the flat....and the deep ball.

Good head coaches don't have to be masters of the Xs and Os. They have to be able to recruit and rexognize talent as ACs snd players and hell, even people on staff at the AD snd the University. People on this board still botch about the 94 NU game day coaching. Mac had "it" and was able to get ACs to do that for him. Miles has the same with LSU and Brown at UT. You can even argue that about Beamer at VT.

Think about the best manager you've ever had. Were they good as a grunt? Some probably were, but definitely not all.

I think it goes to show you just never really know based on resume. I'd definitely agree with you that his career seemed fairly lackluster up to the point of this year. Lots of following others etc. Nothing is a guarantee in this business.

I am very surprised at A&M's success this year. I figured they'd get pounded this year in the SEC, at least by Florida, Alabama, LSU and Arkansas (of course I didn't know that Arkansas would be so terrible). Pretty sure they lost those two games by less than a TD.

I'm kinda irritated by their success, tbh. At least Mizzou got pounded. Still can't believe they beat ASU.

People learn to like places that aren't so desirable to them if they're showered with affection and money. Maybe they "hated Boulder" because the response from the university was luke-warm.

None of the above

What was the story on that? Not enough religion? No place to get a haircut? Boulder too pale?

All the above? What?
The issue with Sumlin and Boulder was none of the above. A guy named Stoops came calling and he had a much better opportunity with a much better program with a much better head coach for much better money. No conspiracies here.
