COACHING CAREER

1997-1998 New Orleans Saints (strength and conditioning coach)
1999-2001 Baltimore Ravens (Linebackers coach)
2002 Carolina Panthers (defensive coordinator)
2003-2011 Jacksonville Jaguars (head coach)
2012 Denver Broncos (defensive coordinator)

Bio/Experience

Del Rio began his coaching career with the New Orleans Saints in 1997 as their strength and conditioning coach. In 1999, he accepted a position with the Baltimore Ravens as the linebackers' coach. He is in part credited for the success of the Ravens' defense, particularly in the 2000 season. After the 2001 season, he was named defensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers and in his first season, in 2002, he led them to the second best defense in the league.
In 2003, Del Rio became the second head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars following Tom Coughlin's dismissal. In his first season, he led the team to a 5–11 record. That year, Jacksonville finished the season with the second-ranked rush defense and sixth best overall defense, having ranked 25th and 20th in those two categories, respectively, the year prior. In 2004, the Jaguars narrowly missed the playoffs with a 9–7 record, the first winning record in five seasons. The following season, the team made the playoffs as a wild card; however, the season was ended with a 28–3 loss to the New England Patriots.
In 2007 Jacksonville cut quarterback Byron Leftwich in favor of David Garrard. The team went on to the playoffs, winning their first playoff game in years. On April 3, 2008, Del Rio's contract with the Jaguars was extended through the 2012 season.
On January 11, 2010, Del Rio was offered the head coaching job at USC, his alma mater. The next day he denied receiving an offer from USC, stating that the offer was "manufactured". Later that afternoon, he rebuffed USC officially, announcing that he would remain with the Jaguars at least through the duration of his current contract.
On November 29, 2011, Del Rio was fired as Jacksonville's head coach. He left with a regular season record of 69–73 and a 1–2 in two playoff appearances over nine years.
On January 27, 2012, Del Rio was hired as the new defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos.

Questions
Would he come? Would he stay?
No College coaching experience.
What kind of staff could he put together?
Can he recruit?

Strengths
Big name coach. He would excite the fan base.
Defensive Genius
Instant legitimization of CU Job

Ugh. Do not want. I just don't understand the obsession with Del Rio. Somebody please try to sell me on why this might be a good hire, nothing stated from BCS above sold me that Del Rio would be a good fit to be a HC in college.

wasnt making a case laying out the facts

No. Not interested in another NFL'er. Plus there is the possibility of a Jack/Luke sideshow a la Dan/Cody...

As a big time Broncos fan, the difference JDR has brought to this unit has been stark. We opened the season with huge question marks at DT, LB and S. Those three positions have played better than any can imagine. Denver is very good at stopping the run, playing the pass, and forcing TO's and sacks. The growth ive seen in players under him is very exciting as well including Vickerson, Trevathan, Wesley Woodyard, Chris Harris and Tony Carter.

He instantly brings credibility from the pro game and also an olive branch to get kids to the next level.

The only reservation I have is I don't think he sticks long unless it's an NFL or UsC job.

Honest question, is part of the appeal for Del Rio that he's already in Colorado? Del Rio seems to be the only NFL DC that gets mentioned...

I just don't like the idea of NFL coaches, especially guys that have been away from the college game for a while (12+ years in Del Rio's case). So many concerns with recruiting, being able to deal with an AD, academic concerns with players, limited hours to coach, young players, ... Such a different game than in the pros.

I'd love to have Del Rio. If he did, I might suggest that he let his kid go to Okie State. I heard the coach and son on the same team thing doesn't work out so great...

The main appeal is that he's been both a successful HC and DC in the pro's. In light of Embree, that is exactly what we need. The fact that hes' been a part of playoff and Super Bowl caliber defenses along with many years as professional football player only add additional appeal.

As long as Luke Del Rio is still going to Stillwater, I believe we could go with Del Rio as the HC for the Buffs. I think with Manning in Denver, it showed him that offenses like the one with Manning is the way to go in college football these days. Plus I can imagine that the Broncos D had some success against Manning in practice on some days.

Del Rio and Dykes are two names that I'm interested in.

Could you imagine the reaction if Del Rio and his kid came here?

Okay, so his NFL-based resume builds some excitement for the 1st recruiting class, but after the 1st year, it comes down to whether Del Rio recruit the moms and dads, not just on his past NFL experience, but on recent success, getting a college education at CU, playing for the Buffs, ..? I have no doubt the guy is a good coach and that he is a top flight NFL DC, but if that translates to the college coaching world isn't necessarily a given in my mind.

Del Rio would be interesting but not here. Maybe at Auburn. Imagine him vs. Saban. If he has a son that is a QB recruit, let it go. That should be the first question asked in the interview. "Got a son, grandson, or nephew that is a quarterback recruit? If yes, then see you later."
