I'm curious about what people think, especially if they lived in the Boulder area or were around the team when he was coaching here.

I wasn't, so I got the little bit someone got on the east coast in that era of college football. Basically, some pre-season mags, the scores in the Sunday paper, and 1 or 2 games a year on tv if CU was good.

So, has Mac changed? Or has he always been this way?

its both... hes always been a little nuts... but this is that aged altered state that i got to **** with tonight

Always a little krazy and always a "me first" guy.

Now he's just like evrybody's whacko uncle, the one who brought the sock-puppet, the cheap cigars and the bottle of Irish Wild Rose to your house at Christmas

I agree with BCS, a little bit of both. I was never comfortable with his outspoken religious beliefs back in the 90's.

Always passionately opinionated, always willing to speak his mind. However, this latest rampage is, IMO, way beyond what he would have done years ago. Aging people often lose a lot of their inhibitions, unknowingly. I wouldn't be surprised if Mac really doesn't realize that he's gone off the deep end. As Sacky has said, he really needs someone from his inner circle to try and talk some sense into him.

I don't know. Marching on Boulder abortion clinic and supporting Amendment 2 from a CU podium happened back in the day. (Amendment 2 was the law that would have put it into our CO state constitution that homosexuals could be discriminated against in hiring and housing.) He's got a track record of jumping in with both feet when there's an issue he's passionate about. Opportunities for black men is right at the top of that list.

As I alluded to, never shy of negative publicity. I guess that I don't think his prior antics come close on the wacky meter to his current nonsense.

Of course he has changed. He is now a delusional, angry, sad, piece of garbage. He was not that way when he coached the Buffs.

meh... i think he was always like this.

it just benifited us for the most part on the football field in the past. thus, it was not a big deal. just easier to take the wins and the passion in the program he helped build than it was to dismiss a person we were not sure was past his prime.

and i think about 90% of us were with him until this last escapade.

well, now we know.

so... today... not so much.

Uh.....S'okay! Don't hold back, tell us what you really think, DB.

i recall walking next to Mac on a Friday night on the west end of campus toward the hill before he turned the ship around (1985 or 1986, perhaps). What a fantastic guy. Unbelievably inspirational. Until this week, this guy was a hero to me. Now, I am crushed with his whacked out perspective. Maybe it is dementia.

oh well. Let's move on.

He was sort of always this way. He has always been an amazingly passionate person who pursued his goals until he achieved them. And somehow managed to talk everyone else into going with him on the journey. When that journey was winning a MNC at CU and getting a Heisman winner at CU, we were all shoulder to shoulder with him.

Then he became passionate about other things. Things that weren't so easy for some of us to get behind. The same passion and ability to bring others with you is fantastic when it is deployed in pursuit of something you agree with, and who can't agree with a MNC? (Other than certain anti-football elements present on all university campuses.) When those abilities are used for ends that you don't quite agree with, it becomes a little scary. That passion isn't so fun any more.

Today, it's just sad. He's become blinded by that same passion that we once so admired. It's being deployed in the name of an admittedly good cause (promoting black coaches in the NCAA), but he's fighting the wrong battle in that war. It's a little like the battle for Corregidor in WWII. MacArthur lost that battle, and had to be talked off the edge (he wanted to resign his commission rather than obey the order to withdraw to Australia) - but the war was eventually won. At this point, I really wish Coach would follow the General's lead after he sustained a different defeat. A good soldier doesn't die, he just fades away.

I agree with this.....

He's always been fiery, but something has gone awry. He has anger that I haven't seen in him before. It worries me.

He went from being the cool guy on the block, to the old man that sits on his front porch and yells at kids for riding their bikes too close to his lawn.

"I've been trying to figure something in my head, and maybe you can help me out, yeah? When a person is insane, as you clearly are, do you know that you're insane? Maybe you're just sitting around, reading "Guns and Ammo", masturbating in your own feces, do you just stop and go, "Wow! It is amazing how f***ing crazy I really am!"? Yeah. Do you guys do that?"

He has always had a big streak of this, but he has also changed. Getting older, and I think more desperate to be "relevant" to the program, have brought out the worst parts of his personality. The fact that he wouldn't listen to "reason" or accept that things couldn't be done when he believed they could are probably big factors in CU going from terrible to champions under his watch. But there comes a time when you have to know that you have become Don Quixote, tilting at windmills and believing them to be giants. No matter how chivalrous you may think your quest is, the rest of the world is all too aware that it's all in your imagination...

I think Big Mac's pride is wounded since CU hasn't been able to sustain success long after he left. He came from Michigan which is a powerhouse that goes through some tough times once in awhile but will always be Michigan. Michigan has been in the same conference forever while CU made a radical change by moving to the PAC and it isn't the same as the football played east of the Rockies. I admit I'm struggling with this still but anyone who has a clue about football understands that the PAC is different and the Buffs have to take a different approach compared to what worked in the B1G and Big 8.

Mac should be proud since Les Miles is successful at LSU and was successful at Okie State.

What bothers me is about how Mac's timing on his resignation overshadowed Salaam's achievements and now what disturbs me is that this might have an effect on his grandson's ability to play for the Buffs. T.C. McCartney could be hurt by the actions of his grandfather. Now I see Mac as someone who is so full of himself and I'm wondering if he is the man that we all believe he is made out to be.

I voted for always been like this, but I think that's an oversimplification. Mac's always been fiery, outspoken, and frankly, a little bit of a dick. But what he wasn't back in the day was bitter. The bitterness and hate is new, and that's what's controlling him right now. I don't know if it's not being in the game and not having an outlet, or just not being able to control things like he used to, but it seems that he has been stewing in this world for a while, and it's just raging out of him now.

Yeah. He's coming across as spiteful. I don't think I've ever seen that.
