Experience/Bio: Smart began his coaching career with the University of Georgia in 1999, serving one season as an administrative assistant. He then moved to Valdosta State where he spent two seasons as defensive backs coach then being promoted to defensive coordinator in the 2001 season. Between the 2002–2003 football season, Smart was a graduate assistant under Bobby Bowden at Florida State. Smart spent one season in 2004 under LSU head coach Nick Saban. Smart then moved back to the Georgia Bulldogs football program as he served as the team's running backs coach for the 2005 season. His only season in the NFL occurred in 2006 in which he served under Nick Saban again, this time as Miami's safeties coach. In January 2007, Smart once again followed Nick Saban after Saban was named the head football coach at the University of Alabama. On January 9, Saban named Smart as an assistant coach.[2] On February 27, 2008, Smart was promoted to the team's defensive coordinator.[3]


Question marks:
- Never Been a Head Coach.
- Historically an SEC guy with limited west coast roots.
- Isn't Saban really the DC?

Strengths:
- Major Conference experience
- Like Mac was, a DC at the current Big Dog in CFB
- Instant Credibility for the staff
- Defenses at Alabama have been lights out
 
This is a name that kinda worries me mostly in the fact that I'm always worried with a DC where the HC is thought of as a great defensive coach. However, it does say something that in most places Saban has gone, Smart has gone with him, so Saban would appear to think very highly of him and have great trust for Smart to get the job done.
 
No to SEC! The talent available to these guys is just sick! And none of that talent needs to learn to read or otherwise do things to stay eligible!

MUCH rather have the DC at Stanford. He can recruit the kind of player who can succeed at CU and teach great "D" to very good, but not necessarily All-World talent.

Face it, CU is not going to compete for and land the typical SEC athlete/recruit!
 
We need a proven program builder as top dog with enough cache to bump recruiting, and preferably a younger dude. Are there any of those types that would come here? Without major facilities and commitment from admin. the pool of candidates shrink. I hope what Bohn and Phil said today is true and not just 'Platti-tudes'.
 
Smart is the type of coach I'd look at closely. Spent 3 stops with the best coach in the country at LSU, Miami Dolphins and Alabama. Coordinates one of the best defense in the country. If we're looking at hiring a college level coordinator for the job, he has to make the top 3.

Fairly experienced for a guy his age, too
 
He would be a good hire, throw 2 million his way. He has paid his dues, time for a promotion.
 
I like Smart as candidate. Studied under the top coach in nation, from the top program for the past few years, runs a solid defense, and is ready to step up to become a head coach. Put him with a good offensive coordinator and he will give CU a good chance to gain relevancy.
 
My main concern with Smart is how much of Alabama's defensive dominance him? Saban is notorious for being a defense first guy.
 
He has been with Saban since the beginning in Alabama. Smart was the winner of Broyles Award in 2009 for the top assistant coach in the nation. Alabama's rise began in 2008 when Smart was promoted although you could argue what caused the rise. Alabama has the chance to win a 3rd national title in 4 seasons. He could be a great choice if we go down the coordinator route.
 
We need to be looking at guys like this. There are plenty of successful coaches who were BCS coordinators before they were hired for their first HC gig: Muschamp, Dan Mullen, Jimbo Fisher, Mark Richt...Smart could definitely fit that mold.
 
Someone on Twitter reported that there was a Kirby Smart siting in Denver today (sounds like at a restaurant). If true, he could be there for recruiting or personal reasons but he could also be interviewing at CU.

I'd be stoked if that were the case. He has tons of SEC experience and worked under Saban for a long time. Saban has actually publicly said he thinks Smart could replace him when he retires or moves on.
