Status of Derek McCartney

I know he is a greyshirt and I know we are hopeful the new coach honours grey shirts but this one is a unique situation. I wonder if he even wants to go to CU now assuming he is taking his grandpa's side on all of this.

Wonder what a new coach would think about having a player on the team who's influential grandpa is trying to wreak havoc on the school? Totally unfair to put Derek in the middle of the firing range given he has nothing to do with it, just wondering?

P.S. If this has already been explored in our recruiting forum than please delete the thread or merge it. I haven't paid much attention to the recruiting forum since we canned Embree.

He has said he wants to be a Buff regardless (Embree firing). Nothing else has come out since then that I'm aware of.

Bill McCartney is irrelevant, imo. Derek should be judged only on who he is and how well he balls.

NOrmally I would agree with you but I am pretty sure he wasn't irrelevant in Derek receiving a scholarship-at least based on the fact the he appeared to receive no other interest from any other BCS schools, or to my knowledge Division 1 schools.

I am sure he is a good athlete and w/ good coaching he may earn playing time but not so sure Mac had nothing to do w/ Embree's offer.

The next coach would probably be smart to just affirm the offer. It would hopefully help win over Mac and the angry B4L crew.

I suspect all the greyshirts will be honored, but especially this one. Can you imagine the controversy if it wasn't? Hopefully, Embree offered Derek based on a talent and not on bloodlines. Recruitment seemed a lot like Dorman the previous year, though. We'll see.

Seriously, I can see Mac just camping outside of Dal Ward with signs and such if the next coach were to drop Derek.

Unlike Dorman he seems to be a good enough athlete in addition to being a pretty good kid that he should be able to make some contributions somewhere even if he isn't a star. To develop into a solid depth chart guy and play well on special teams would justify honoring the scholly and I don't think that is in any way outside of what he should be able to do for the Buffs.

Dorman on the other hand is a guy who is going to keep eating up a scholly as long as he is here without ever having a reasonable expectation of seeing the field in any capacity.

The criticism towards Dorman is too harsh on the board. Dorman was ranked 74th QB in the nation. He is a freshmen, looked okay in spring ball. The guy is redshirting, too early to make any reasonable conclusions about Dorman talent or what he will bring to the Buffs going forward.

Did you mean Dillon?

Probably not

Yeah. Probably not. He said something about him playing in the spring "game", but he also said something about him redshirting. I don't know who he's talking about. Dorman was passed on the depth chart by a walk on, though.

I hope McCartney joins. He seems like a guy with potential that just needs to bulk up. Dorman I'm puzzled by. Wasn't he a solid 3* that played HS in Texas? Considering the poor QB play this year it's concerning that he wasn't even in the conversation. Then again, I don't think he was offered by any other major programs.

It's this questioning that makes this issue a concern for me as well. Seems like a great kid and I'd love to see him succeed first and foremost somewhere. Secondly, if he's good enough to be a Buff, I hope it's here. But there is always going to be that question about Coach Mac's influence here. I have hoped from day 1 that Embree (and Mac) were certainly smart enough to foresee this situation and thus they would have been sure to know, without doubt, that this kid would erase all suspicion from Day 1. That his play on the field would just speak for itself.

Over the last couple weeks, I've come to question the wisdom of Embree and Coach Mac, so paint me as concerned here.

The fact that he played HS ball at a small school, played other sports, and really didn't get a lot of weight room time, suggests he could have been a real hidden gem.

The next coach needs to determine this fast and have a sit down asap. If he's not quite up to Buff standards and Embree did something really stupid here, help the kid find a school willing to pay his way (D2, D1A, etc) and get this out of the way right away. If he's good enough, great! But he has to be good enough to keep us from questioning in my opinion, because it's not fair for the kid to have to justify this publicly over and over.

All the greyshirts should get an honest and frank appraisal from the new staff. If they don't fit, their best option is to know right now and make a move elsewhere.

Are you defending Dorman with that QB ranking? Yikes.

I just don't want mac to have a platform or reason to speak for the Buffs...That is my concern. I want kids that deserve to be Buffs by being ballers.
