I work in the car business. When people leave the store without a rig, the likelihood of them coming back to buy one is about 10%. Yes, there are people who go home to "think about it" and ultimately come back to buy; but, generally, people hate the process of shopping. Most folks love being recruited, though they hardly leave . If they're going to make a change, they do so on the visit because they've done their thinking before they showed up to the store. Being at the store helps to either bring leverage to another situation at another dealer or leaves them feeling uneasy.

We did not strike while the iron is hot with Jones and close the deal. I get that we tried our hardest, which is extremely admirable. But, the deal is not closed -- especially since our best inside source had the odds go down from AA vs KK with 1 card left to AK vs QQ with the whole board to deal.

With that in mind, who is the next coach we'll pursue and bring in for some courtship? Mendenhall? DeRuyter? Door #3?

BTW, I think it's interesting how much people have clamored for Jones when not many (at least on this board) really saw him as a top candidate that they wanted to hire for this position.

Who knows.

As to your last sentence, I think everyone wants to see CU land Jones now that it is very clear that we have identified him as our top candidate. Would look pretty bad if we strike out.

:yeahthat:

He is a lukewarm hire - but no one wants to CU strike out so openly with trying to hire a coach.

I have read that Stitt has expressed interest in coming up to the big leagues as an OC. Any rumors about DeRuyter being interested (or no)?

@Alfred91: I was referring to the odds of buying one (car) is about 10%.

Soooooo, you sell cars worth $2.5 million, eh?

Seems a guy might want to talk over that kind of scratch (as well as his entire future career) with the missus, away from all the hype and hoopla!

I just can't imagine he'd want to stay in Cincy. The Big East is imploding, Cincy doesn't have the resources of CU and if he's like his buddy Kelly, he's an ambitious career guy...these guys have moved around a lot.

Besides, what else could he accomplish at Cincy? A national champ will never come from tha conference. Plus there's no comparison between Boulder and Cincy. Seems this decision is like what they call everyday in the Tini household...a no brainer.

Damn. Now that you have indirectly confirmed he would be a great hire, I'm going to be bummed if we lose him.

Will support any coach that is hired, wish him the best, but I have my doubts, hope I am wrong. Here are some concerns.

1. Won with Kelly recruits
2. Not the best recruiter
3. Coached in a bad conference the Big East
4. No ties to the West coast, we basically lose a year of recruiting, not a big name coach to overcome most of the problems he will face.
5. We don't have the players to run the Spread effectively. We have some pieces but not enough to be a contender in the Pac 12. I don't see Dillon or Sefo running the ball 6 to 10 times a game.
6. 2.75 million is too much. There are a lot of good up coming co-ordinators that have paid their dues that deserve a promotion.

Not everyone.

Because you don't like Jones, you want to see CU strike out on their clear #1 choice? Would love to hear how that makes the CU job look any more attractive to the random candidate you may like out there.

1. Won with Kelly recruits

already debunked by a few posters

2. Not the best recruiter

see #1

3. Coached in a bad conference the Big East

well, you actually have something there.

4. No ties to the West coast, we basically lose a year of recruiting, not a big name coach to overcome most of the problems he will face.

Don't think we "lose a year," but yeah, there will be a slow start.

5. We don't have the players to run the Spread effectively. We have some pieces but not enough to be a contender in the Pac 12. I don't see Dillon or Sefo running the ball 6 to 10 times a game.

You have ZERO credibility to make this argument. I would accept this from someone who actually knows something about x's & o's football, but your listening to the douchenozzle's on espn calling college games in order to learn "the spread" has obviously decreased your football IQ (if there ever was one to start with). Also: BJ was the first to offer Dillon a scholarship, and Dillon camped at Cincy - there's obviously some sort of match with the system there.

6. 2.75 million is too much. There are a lot of good up coming co-ordinators that have paid their dues that deserve a promotion.

a. we're going to have to overpay
b. coordinators are MUCH more risky than HC's - you're seriously advocating increasing the risk of this coaching hire?

I don't have to sell $2.5mm cars. The decision-making process when someone is trying to sell you on change is very similar. Buying a vehicle a huge decision (second biggest financial decision for most people).

1. Coaches generally don't take visits unless you feel like you've done some research up front. That's why Charlie Strong turned us down flatly. He did not see it even as a good potential fit.
2. Coaches have agents; you have a very good idea about the kind of money that's on the table. The dough and incentives are not surprises. The visit functions to see how personalities fit.
3. Coaches typically receive an offer and make a decision on the spot more times than not -- NC State closed Doeren same day; Stoops took Kentucky same day; Saban took Alabama same day after denying that he was a candidate; Petrino took Arkansas and left notes because he left so quickly; Kiffin left Tennessee because he was offered his dream job; the list goes on. The heat of the moment why it was great news for Jones supporters that he left Purdue early and stayed late here. When he made the decision to extend his flight, that was the time to close. Everything looked good for both sides, but he left with no contract. That means he is open minded about: 1) what Cincinnati has to say about him staying or 2) what another school in a better situation may offer him.

Look -- "I want to think about it" is the biggest excuse people use not to take an action where they're being sold. When people "think about it," they start considering reasons why NOT to buy. They heard all of the reasons TO buy when they were on site. You start moving backward because change becomes inconvenient OR a different direction for change becomes apparent.

I am on record again as being very nervous with this hire. I am originally an east coast guy, former Syracuse football season ticket holder, and the Big East is pathetic, so I am not sold his coaching skills would translate in a much tougher environment, that and his total lack of west coast ties definnitely have me very leary. However, I have spoken to a few smart football guys back east in the Syracuse community that have said he is a great hire for us if we land him and that we will all very very happy. So optimism is the name of the game! We shall see.......

1. Won with Kelly recruits

already debunked by a few posters

>>>>By whom? I see that at Central Michigan he won with Kelly's players. I see at Cinci, the transition was pretty messy the first year, but then got them moving the last two years.

2. Not the best recruiter

see #1

>>>> Scout has their current class as #62. Rivals has them currently at #53.

3. Coached in a bad conference the Big East

well, you actually have something there.

>>>>>Not only is the BE bad, they've lost to the two best teams (Louisville and Rutgers) in the conference.

4. No ties to the West coast, we basically lose a year of recruiting, not a big name coach to overcome most of the problems he will face.

Don't think we "lose a year," but yeah, there will be a slow start.

>>>>> I actually don't think this is a valid critique. Players come from everywhere and the staff will recruit what they can, regardless of who they are.

5. We don't have the players to run the Spread effectively. We have some pieces but not enough to be a contender in the Pac 12. I don't see Dillon or Sefo running the ball 6 to 10 times a game.

>>>>> Agree that we'll overpay for a coach who has other BCS options with HC experience (like Jones). We will NOT have to overpay for coaches who do not have the same kind of choices.

My real question is: which gets us the best ROI? Does overpaying $2.75mm to Jones get us 8+ wins more quickly than paying DeRuyter $1.75mm? I don't know.

When people tell you they "want to think about it", what it means is that they know what your offer is, and they're going to go back to another dealership with that knowledge to see if they can get a better deal (see: Jones talking to Cincy now that he knows for sure what CU's offer looks like). If they don't come back, it means that they found a better offer or met a better salesman. That does not mean that's what is happening with Jones. CU has made him a very substantial offer, and a huge offer in terms of salary for his staff. Plus a lot of facilities improvements. Can Cincy match it? With their conference crumbling around them? We'll see.

Kelly left Cincy due to Nippert and Cincy has had that time to convince Jones that they were serious about upgrading Nippert. It sounded to me that there hasn't been much done at this point with Nippert. Perhaps this will give a jolt to Cincy that something needs to be done with Nippert. Jones could even do Cincy a disservice by staying which would imply that the status quo was okay when it really isn't ok. Cincy fans should look at CU as an example of what could happen if the status quo is accepted for way too long.

Don't be naive, Kelly left Cincy to coach at Notre Dame.

"I'm going to think about it". In my world, that means I have to run it by my wife. Can't imagine Butch is any different.

I don't think this analogy works. People don't typically accept job offers at the interview. People almost always sleep on it, espeically if they have multiple offers.

Wife was here in Boulder for the visit. Flight was delayed. No deal then. Presser for Cinci now.

Methinks that only bolsters my argument. He's asked his wife. We're currently in limbo.

In major college football coaching, people act quickly. I've given many examples (current) where the AD closed the same day. When "your guy" leaves, you lose face and chances to close go down.

I do appreciate your optimism.

As for the car analogy, I have to disagree...I went to two dealerships for serious talks about purchasing cars. First time I slept on that decision and backed out. Second time, I walked out. Third time, I got my car. Just because Jones didn't sign on the dotted line doesn't mean he will reject the offer...it's smart of him to be sleeping on that offer.
