Butch Jones-Decision Day #3 Thread

I know this is ludicrous we still don't have full confirmation if BJ will or will not be our next HC. I know many of us were initially luke warm that he was the right pick when word first leaked, but most of us rallied behind Bohn and the AD and said, if that's our man, let's make this happen.

The antics of the past few days certainly have spoiled what would have been seen as a major coup for Colorado, given that BJ in the past 12 months has reportedly spurned UCLA, Purdue, Illinois and others. By many accounts, BJ is on of the hot, up and coming coaches ready for the big leagues.

Unfortunately his behaviour the past few days including requesting the plane go into the hangar and to hide behind a food cart, his indecision, his apparent ongoing unwillingness to inform his team that he is leaving if he is leaving, continued pressers for a bowl game for his old team (assuming that is his old team) and now flat out denial that DP's sources were correct are starting wear thin on all of us.

THis thing has to be resolved today one way or the other. I want BJ to come because CU wants him, but I am feeling as indecisive as BJ now, but the topic is whether I really want a guy who behaves this way to be our next coach.

THere is a very critical but interesting article in the DP today which slams BJ's behaviour and doesn't leave Bohn free of criticism either.

In the end of the day, I am planning to give BJ the benefit of the doubt if he comes here, and just assume he was trying to do the right thing by making sure it was the right decision and informing his team first, but just didn't execute it well because he is new to this level of media scrutiny. It's something he will have to improve on-and so will Bohn no doubt.

Let's get this over with and start turning our program around. I want CU Football to perform the way our BB team is under Tad. Competitive in all games, win most of them, never give up attitude even when the chips are down, and rock the house, drawing sold out attendance. It will happen. Hopefully with BJ, if not, whoever is next on the board.

If he ends up coaching here all these oddities will be forgotten very quickly if things start to turn around, we win some games and look respectable in the games we lose.

BTW, thanks for the daily thread - it's a nice recap of the previous days intrigues.

I believe it wasn't executed well for all the right reasons. Think through the timeline:

1) He didn't get back to Cincinnati until 12:30a on Tuesday, after meeting with CU officials.
2) He clearly wanted to discuss the job with his children and assistant coaches which probably didn't happen until Tuesday morning/afternoon (coaches), Tuesday evening (family).
3) I'm guessing he made his decision on Tuesday, but wanted to either a) coach the Bearcats in the Belk Bowl, or 2) have input into his replacement before he announced his decision. Thus the discussion with the UC AD on Wednesday morning.
4) He had a contractual commitment to go to the Belk Bowl presser Wednesday afternoon.
5) Not clear why he stayed later in North Carolina than originally planned, or why he went to the Panther's facility for meetings.
6) Meeting with team and press conference on Thursday morning.

For ****'s sake. We act like it took this guy a week to make and announce a decision, and left us in some incomprehensible lurch. In reality it appears as if the decision was made, and news leaked, about 48 hours after he departed Rocky Mountain Regional Airport. The final announcement should come 3 days after stepping foot in Colorado.

I suspect the bitching and moaning wouldn't be so bad if Trace Armstrong had kept his mouth shut and hadn't told Woody Paige that the decision would be announced on Tuesday.

The good news is this: All indications are that we'll have a new football coach announced today. He appears to be a stand-up guy, who really cares for his players and his program, and wants to do the right thing. No other coaches will be able to argue otherwise when they are recruiting against us.

Jones is using Bohn, I really doubt Bohn has any inkling what to do about it.

I have been convinced he is coming since the photo was made public of Solich entertaining him, his agent and wife on his Boulder visit. Solich represents the confirmation of facilities. My concern is not Cincy, but rather Wisconsin. Jones has dragged this out two days and today at ten Wisc. barry Alvarez will discuss coach and rose bowl berth. If Jones doesnt commit to CU prior to that presser, watch out.

You actually think in the end that BJ is staying in Cinci and just using CU to get a better deal?

If you do you are certainly not alone and some think that b/c this is his 2nd year on the market and he get a renegotiated deal that this is the case. I don' think so. At least I certainly hope not.

I have a feeling I will be a high profile posting member here before the day is over!! haha. Well, this will be it today. I will try to keep you guys appraised of the situation from here, the media and players, but feel pretty confident he will be representing the C in Colorado by this afternoon.

Cpaw. You've been a good sport through this. Would you consider switching your allegiance to Colorado?

Glad to hear it from your end Cpaw. Funny how this situation is having an identical impact on both fanbases: annoyance. I tend to agree that he will be our coach at the end of the day. I think that Colorado is simply putting too much on the table, and he is getting all of his ducks in a row. Just will be glad when it is over.

Thanks again for stepping up to the plate. Hope we can somehow return the favor some day. ANy chance you guys want Embree or Bienemy? We can help with that :)

On a serious note, what is the general opinion of the UC community right now about the way this has been handled? Are there a lot of people pissed off about how long it is dragging on, BJ's role in pressers, the way CU his handling this, the leak???

I will root for CU and Jones if he goes out there. He has been great to our City and will be a great asset for yours also, and I also love Colorado after spending time their during my Air Force days. No news here yet......

I don't know what Jones is going to do. I do know that his actions look really bad. CU is his potential employer. Either they are calling the shots or Butch is. I think it is pretty obvious to any outsider who is driving the bus. Perception is reality and you can come up with justifications later, but all people will remember, if they do remember, is that Butch led CU around by the nose.

Remember NU's catastrophic HC search after they fired Solich? Days and days of being courted by this coach and that coach who were really only positioning themselves for other jobs or raises. Maybe Butch will end up here but it looks, smells and acts like a situation where he uses Purdue to get CU to make a fat offer, goes home and asks Cincy to match it, then sits back with two deals on the table and surveys the landscape to see if he can get something better. I don't blame him necessarily, but Bohn looks somewhat foolish for letting this drag out.

You do not offer a compensation package like this in full public view unless you are damn sure there will be a yes. If your yes turns sour or drags on, you give a deadline and enforce it. The majority of CFB HC jobs have been filled more promptly. Look at Purdue, Jones says no and they move to the next candidate, done. These contracts are not drawn up from scratch. There are templates and items are negotiated, but if you check the dates on say Danny Hawkins contract, it was executed long after the announcement he was HC. Why? Because there is percieved value in moving forward promptly. Even more so in the world of recruiting.

Jones is playing Bohn and Bohn is clueless, or at least appears so. Once the story broke Monday night, CU should have put a tight deadline on Jones. He just isn't a big enough fish for CU to let him jerk them around like this. Once it surfaced Monday night, ready or not both sides should have swallowed their pride and got to the mikes to control the story. Instead Jones is calling the shots and CU is accomodating him. Now CU looks foolish if Jones goes away. If Jones isn't going to play ball, then CU should cut him loose and go to plan B. Problem is, I am not sure Bohn has a plan B.

With all that $ rolling into the AB junta, maybe they can splurge and get you on a flight to our first home game under the BJ regime. We'd even be OK if you wore your UC gear (some people might just think your dyslexic and color blind)

We are like you and want it to end, yesterday. No one is flying off the deep end this time like we did with Kelly, because CBJ has been pretty transparent. I believe we are getting callous to the coaching changes and have been expecting it, so we are giving him time, because if he does not leave this year we will be going through this again next year. UC has been lucky to hire 3 great coaches over the past nine years: Mark Dantonio now at Michigan State, Brian Kelly at ND and CBJ now heading to CU. This has been uparalleled success and our AD and Prez are fantastic and we all believe will make the next great hire that will leave in 3 years!

Not really. I see more idots that have obviously taken a wrong turn on the way to their game at Folsom than anywhere else. I always see Iowa State, USC, Ohio State, CSU, Arizona etc. gear on game day. Great for a laugh.

You make some valid and articulate points including your criticism of Bohn. And I have been a huge defender of Bohn because I think he has primarily done great things for CU athletics (e.g. CU-CSU last night).

It will be nice to know more of what went on behind the scenes if we ever do find out, but I believe based on all the comments made by people who know him, that BJ is not intentionally ****ing us over to secure a better deal at UC or elsewhere. It is certainly possible but I don't think that is happening.

As others have said, in the end, if he comes here and starts winning recruiting battles, and then battles on the field all will be forgotten and Bohn will be a hero for bringing in a star HC to turn the ship around. If he doesn't come here or things turn sour once he does, that will be another story and Bohn will be looking for a new job, maybe, UC will be hiring by then:)

Good point! As long as you keep winning, who cares who the head coach is!

Cpaw - there has been a fair amount of conversation on the airwaves here in Oklahoma (Big 12 country) that Cincinnati might be one of the teams that gets added to the Big 12 to bring the conference back up to 12 teams. Have you heard any chatter in that regard?

Nothing drives me more insanse than to see people at a stadium watching 2 teams play, and wearing the colors and name of someone not involved with the action on the field. To think it would be okay to wear a Purdue sweatshirt to an CU game and cheer for CU because the colors are close is insane!! See it all the time in Cincy, OSU gear in our stadium and the cheer for the cats, if you want to be a fan, buy the gear!

Cpaw, you have been great the last couple of days and I for one appreciate your comments and participation. Thanks and I hope you come back and stick around after this saga is finally over.

With that said, I think Butch is a decent guy who is trying to work through this the right way from his own sense of loyalty to both the school and his players. That is one of the things that is going to be a huge positive for CU during his employment as the HC. That sense of loyalty is going to play well with Parents and it will be nice to have when he is approached after winning on the field at CU.
