I would expect some sort of confirmation one way or the other on Mullen tomorrow some time. I have a very good source that is working on it. He doesn't believe he would come to CU, but even he admitted he's been wrong before.

I will tweet when I get something, tag allbuffs, and post when I can. Having some health stuff again, not as bad as last time, but residual stuff...so wont be very available tomorrow to hop in chat.

1st Reed-hope the health issues are resolved soon enough.

2nd-That would be freaking amazing. I am not prepared to say it's impossible b/c it is. Who would have thought Tuberville to UC?
 
From what I can tell, all of our information regarding Mullen comes from a stoner at KGNU.

Also the DC idiots made reference to Bohn being interested in Mullen on Nov. 30th.

Given Mullen's background it is not shocking CU would be interested, and there have been rumors the past few years that Mullen doesn't want to stay long term at MSU, so it's reasonable to think he would at least be open to talking to other programs. The question is, is he prepared to do a formal interview and if the stars aligned would he take it?

Guess we'll know soon.

Mullen has a pretty good thing going in Starkville, so it's somewhat doubtful that he's looking to leave. However, if there is something that's driving him to want out, he probably would have been more interested in some of the other "bigger" openings. With those pretty much filled up now, save Wisconsin, if he still really wants out, he might be more receptive to Boulder. Still put this one down as an extreme long shot, but who knows.
 
I think that there is no chance he leaves, we are just going to get him a raise. I really don't know how great of a coach he is, being stuck in the SEC west dooms them to mediocrity. I can tell you this, the first season he was there they instantly became a VERY physical team after playing soft for years prior.

hmmm...
a. Offered a lesser coach than him close to $3MM per year
b. Made commitment that new facilities would be written into contract
c. Let it be known that assistant salary pool would be ~$2.5-$3MM/year
 
Who's to say he doesn't want to leave the South? As someone who lives in the South who's not from here, I can absolutely see why he'd want to leave. With that said, I don't see him coming here.

I bet you if they did reach out to him early they already floated these kind of numbers to him, and even publicly Bohn had already commented on the $2.5m/year number.

Maybe but it's different to see a real commitment to it instead of it being a sales pitch.

Also, the other thing that's changed is the jobs available. Arky and tenn are off the table

Agreed. As much as we would all like to rationalize a scenario where he would come here, I just don't see it. I'd love it, but I don't think it's realistic. However, if, for some reason, Bohn were to pull this off, would that change people's perception of him around here? My guess is that it would... for about a month. :lol:

Louisville, KY and Papa John, are a world apart from Boardtown, a burg of just over 20,000 in Eastern MS. Roughly the same size as Louisville........Colorado, without Louisville's cache as the No 1 town to live in the USA.

Ever been to Boardtown?

No one outside of Mullen and his staff have been either! And they only go back, cuz its "base".
 
Doesn't he already make near what we offered Butch? Why come to our tire fire? Maybe we pony-up more cash? Doubtful.
 
Rationalization aside, Solich sounds a lot like he is going to pay what is needed to get Colorado back on the map. Financial commitment can go a long way towards getting a "big" hire.
 
Ok, let me try and address both sides of the argument here:

Against CU:
hes in the sec
much easier academic rrequirements
makes 2.6mm
already told us it was a non starter
WE CAN'T BE COMPITENT ENOUGH TO HIRE A COACH OF HIS ILK

For CU:
MSU is one of, if not the worst jobs in the sec
3+ million per year
200mm facilities uupgrade
doesnt have to recruit vs sec
Arkansas job is no longer available (that's the sec job he wanted...not UT or Auburn)
current DC Wilson was at and loved CU under Barnett, wanted to stay under hawkins
current WR Tim Brewster was in Denver and family loved it.

Those are the arguments for and against.

I spoke with two people that know him very well in the last few days. Neither of them think CU has much of a chance...but one of them admitted that he has talked about leaving MSU. That said, half million dollar raises aren't anything to ignore. And coaching out of the SEC has to be appealing to a guy that cannot compete year in and year out w/ Alabama, LSU, Florida, etc.

Thanks Reed for your inside info. I don't think there are enough positive signs that Mullen is seriously interested in CU. There was also the comment made by someone inside this thing that Mullen was reached out to in the beginning and showed little interest at that time. I don't think much has changed, in fact arguably, if anything the job looks worse now b/c of the infighting, negative media attention, the BJ fiasco.

I think there is a 99% chance our next HC is someone not named Mullen. I'd be happy to be wrong though.
 
I don't think we have a chance. With that being said....

He will never turn MSU into a conference title contender in the SEC. Not for a lack of coaching but because MSU lacks the resources to compete with the SEC big boys.

He could turn CU in a conference title contender which would bolster his stock and he could one day get looks from one of the elite SEC programs or other big programs in the country.

That is about the only win I see for him in this move.

I think the public is more aware the CU is attempted to commit themselves financially. Who knows, in the beginning maybe CU just kind of asked was told not interested and they quickly moved on thinking they could land BJ. Once that failed maybe they show Mullen what they are committed to putting in writing and he takes a second look?

Desperate times. I think if Solich has the option to lock down Mullen for an extra couple of million in guaranteed money, he would likely do so.
