How to solve the QB scholly overload

From what I have seen and heard, Sefo would be a great fit, but I still HIGHLY doubt that he starts a game (barring injuries) and most likely I would assume he will redshirt.

Mostly what I hope for is Dillon runs away with it in Spring, with either Hirsch or Wood winning backup and Sefo running scout and redshirting.

2014, however, I fully anticipate a major QB battle.
This is the probable scenario. I also anticipate cutting Webb, Shrock and Dorman. 4 QBs is enough.

I can't help but imagine any of those guys might have been affected by an inconsistent and poorly coached offense. I wouldn't want to criticize or condemn any of the guys that saw playing time, because we don't know what kind of disorganization they had to deal with from the sidelines this past year. How about we let the new coach evaluate?

In his presser, he said that "we will figure out who the 22 starting guys are and who will be the backups (during tryouts)". I would infer that he plans on honoring current scholarships and then to conduct tryouts in the spring.

I wonder if he is cognizant of how bad and imbalanced our numbers are. I'm not sure how he can pursue all of the current OL and WR recruits in addition to gray shirts without extending beyond the scholarship limits, especially given the possibility of transfers.

How he handles this challenge is going to be a real litmus test to see if he is up to snuff.

I know what we had to deal with from the bleachers...QB sneak on 1st and 10 comes to mind...

I think it is fairly common for a new coach coming into a bad team to tell a certain amount of players that they are not likely to see the field due to a combination of their attitude and ability. I would assume if Mac is good at his job, he will do the same.

Allowing players to make their own decisions based on their feel for the new coaches and style of play while honoring their schollies is not necessarily far from pulling them, if they are clearly informed that they are unlikely to ever play. Pulling not honoring commitments (at least through the first season) could easily undermine a sense of solidarity.

The other side of this is that we have never seen any of our QBs run a pistol offense. We might have 3 All-Americans on our roster with this offense. Who knows?

No need to cut anyone. We are going to be pressed to come up with enough PAC12 level players to fill the 85 that we have. I expect they will move forward with what they have.

You think a coach who has promised to honor current commitments is going to cut guys on scholarship? Doubt it.

You bet he will. Both have already been cut from D1 programs and have shown they can't get it done. In the words of Paulo "Adios Amigo."

Can't we put Webb on waivers? He's been on the free agent wire before. Ahthankyouverymuch. I'll be here all week.

could you imagine the blow to webbs ego/psyche getting cut from not 1 but 2 schools and lose his starting position halfway through a 1-11 season?

ouch

It happens. Sucks, but with another year under scholarship then he should be able to finish up his Masters degree. He may have 2 years of eligibility left, but he doesn't have to use them.

If we're not wasting a scholly on him, let's keep him. Just don't see the need for a scholly for him with Shane, Sefo, Nick and Conner.

Schrock had been promised to be on scholly going in to this next year. Good kid, and I hope he stays on team, but I don't see the new staff honoring this promise.

Cutting guys off of scholarship is bad form if you want to maintain good reputations with HS coaches and not just the ones from the schools where the guys you cut are from.

As BnG says we are not likely to be pressed for space next season anyways. Of course if you want to get rid of a guy or two without cutting them you tell them that they will be covering punts and kicks to earn their schollies.
