What does MacIntyre have to work with on Offense?

QB:
We return 100% production (assuming no attrition)
Shane Dillon could very well be the starter. Experience suggests we'll be better here
Wood and Schrock got their first ever PT. Hirschman received the most substantial PT of his career as well

RB:
We return 100% of production
Powell proved he could be a #1 back, if he stays healthy. Abron really came on here later in the season.
Tony Jones had a good ypc, but only with 63 carries
1434 yards and 13 TD's returning (also 50 receptions for 313 yards)

WR
We return nearly 100% production (Ebner's 10 catches and 116 yards graduates)
Prich returns from injury, so Spruce won't be keyed in on
Spruce definitely proved he could be a #2 receiver, his stats were close to McKnight's freshman year, but with far worse QB'ing
McCulloch can now slide to #3, or even 4 if the Thomas' pass him
95 receptions, 1069 yards and 5 TD's returning (not counting PRich)

TE
Biggest loss here with Kasa graduating. We will miss his production
However, Slavin, Thornton, Hobbs (hopefully), and Fernandez return. All got their first significant PT in '12.
39 catches, 418 yards and 2 TD's returning

OL
All 5 starters return (Bakhtiari, Lewis, Munyer, Harris, Nembot)
The only players who graduate from the 2-deep are Richter and Dannewitz, neither of which got substantial PT
This group came on later in the season, and will only get better
Some guys got their first ever PT as well (Irwin, Cotner, Nembot), while others got their first substantial PT (Lewis, Harris, Munyer).

The only offensive players we lose are Ebner, Kasa, Richter, and Dannewitz. We basically lose nothing. Assuming we pick up the Offense quickly, I think it's safe to assume we'll be much better on O in 2013

You are forgetting all the incoming WR's as well as the redshirted frosh at TE. We will be green, but much more talented.

an effective scheme and good playcalling would make the offense about a 1000X better than what we saw this year. fingers crossed.

i like the idea of running the pistol. we'll need to recruit more speed, but we needed to do that anyhow. and, i think with a head of steam, powell could be very dangerous out of the backfield in the pistol. ... definitely "unproven" at qb at this point, with the scheme change, but i am optimistic someone will step up.

The question then becomes....is returning 100% of production and all that experience very valuable if none of them are talented?

Not suggested that everyone is not talented, but is a valid question given what we saw on the field this year.....or was it ALL coaching?

Improvement will ride & fall again at the QB position....really really need much better production from that position alone

Spruce rFR year:
44 receptions 446 Yards and 3 TD's
McKnights rFR year:
43 receptions 488 yards and 4 TD's

Spruce for the next 3 years will be nice

One thing to note on offense: Shane and other non-starters were on the scout team, so they have experience running some kind of spread offense.

Outside of a functional QB, I'm less concerned about the O than I am the D.

I'm glad Mike and Jeff seem to be great defensive minds cuz they players will need some help.

With P-Rich, JT and GT, the ability to stretch the defense will be far greater than last year. That should allow us to utilize the mismatches more successfully. McColluch will matchup against lesser db's than he saw this season (figure the same for Spruce-I like those two as reliable third and fourth receivers). Our tight ends will match up favorably against LB's and as catch/run threats Powell and Payne (assuming Payne has good mitts) should be tough to stop. With better qb play, I assume the offense will be significantly better, though I'd like to see more of a run game than what they showcased at SJSU this season. I agree with a poster above that the D is what worries me. I'm sure it will be improved #'s wise but depth is an issue too.

Offense should be better, but then again, it couldn't be any worse than it was this last year. Returning the majority of the starters should obviously help, the addition of PRich, more QB competition should all help things. But honestly, I'm expecting it will be improved coaching and play calling that makes the biggest difference. Only fear is that the players have a difficult time picking up yet another offensive scheme (and the o-linemen adjust to another coach/scheme).

It all starts with the QB. If we don't have better QB play then we are going to struggle. PRich being back will be good but if the other team is not worried that the QB can hit him it won't make much difference. I really like Powell at RB but was not impressed with anyone else at the position. WR has a lot of needs - the talent falls way down after PRich. I don't think that either Webb or Wood will be a factor at QB and I hope that Dillion is the real deal. Hirschman looked good at times (still throws too many picks).

If I was some of these qb's on the roster I would be looking into transferring to a smaller school unless you just want to go to school in Boulder? at least Burnett got the hint and moved on.

If Hobbs is really gone, then we lack a TE with playmaking ability.

If our offense is able to substantially improve, which i think we will offense can be the defenses best friend. Our defense was on the field WAY too much and a better offense will translate to an improved defense.

I can't excited about our "returning talent" until I see what happens vis-a-vis attrition, recruiting, and Spring Ball. We have some talent and potential, but everyone needs to get drastically better.

Someone should also get ready to create the annual "Best Offseason Yet of Strength/Conditioning" thread in about March-ish.

You can tell by how at times, unless severely overmatched, the defense looked halfway decent. But because of the epic ineptitude of our offense, they were on the field way too long. Ya they are acclimated to the altitude, but it will still kill you if you work hard enough in it.

Three main issues that will need to be addressed:

1. Who is the QB? Cannot have another season where three different QBs start games.
2. Who do we have at RB? Powell showed well as a freshman, but who else do we have?
3. Do we have anyone else that can make explosive plays on a consistent basis besides PRich?

I still see a lack of overall talent at the skill positions.

That is why I think for the most part our first half Defense was decent and fell apart in the second half. They got tired.

If P-Rich really is "back" that will be huge. Just the threat itself will change the way defenses have to deal with us.If he has a big game in the first 2 weeks of the season, they will see the film and key on him and that will help open things up for us. It was absolutely a missing ingredient this year. Even as a decoy (if the QB can't reliably get him the ball) he forces a defense to remain honest in a way they didn't have to do this year.

What a bunch of negative-ninnie, glass mostly empty downers some of you are. Coach's job is to turn this thing around, and he has shown an ability to do so. How long before ya get on board? This is OUR ****ing Buff team! (walks away shaking his handsome bald head...)

This borders on non sequitur.

Well, I disagree. Quixotic yes. What the hell good does anyone expect to do by bitchin' and moanin? NewMac's our coach, our players are our players, I don't get the negativity (yeah, this is a bitch-forum for some, I know) regarding things that are set in motion and pretty much going our way. Things ain't rosey yet, but the skid, presumably, has ended. I just wanna root for the Buffs. Thanks for the condesention though.

I'm on tapatalk, so I can't tell, but I sure hope you used the sarcasm font. If not, I'm worried for you.
