Ted Miller Interview with Mike MacIntyre

Think the article was actually by Gemmel and RSSBot may have scooped you on this by just a bit, but other than that, you're right, a decent read.

I've said it before, but this quote really highlights something that Embree mismanaged......... Expectations, which resulted in Loss of Confidence.

"MM: ....the young men just need to get confidence. And the way you build confidence is you set small goals and you reach that goal and the next one and the next one. That goes for the weight room, the classroom, the meeting rooms, out on the practice field. They will build their confidence back slowly and all of a sudden they will start showing up on game day and we'll start making plays and finishing games the way we should. It doesn't just happen with the snap of a finger."

I was cringing all summer as the talk moved from a team that won 3 games in 2011 and lost a LOT of good players, including PRich and the only experienced QB, to everyone talking about how we would go bowling. I think Embree felt you had to have swagger to win, but it backfired, completely. To me, this was a train-wreck of epic proportions waiting to happen. He skipped over "small goals".

I would have set the expectations VERY low. He had a new QB in August. While the boards were talking about whether Connor Wood would be first or second team All-American, Embree was scrambling to find a starter who could minimally execute the complex offense that they brought with them from the NFL.

I think Embree tried to instill confidence and swagger by setting higher expectations than were reasonable. Some of us heard he was talking about totally demoralizing CSU in game one. When we lost a closely played game, he lost the false confidence and swagger he had tried to instill in his team. They didn't believe it.

You don't talk your way into confidence. You earn it, typically in small steps.

Yeah figured the RSS bot would get it before me but that area doesn't seem to get as many discussions going unless it involves Water Bottle or Insane Mac.

This isn't from the article but I saw it on Rivals by CL34. i think it was from his press conference but this also gives me a lot of confidence in MacIntyre:
"It was like getting my PhD in coaching. If you can imagine sitting at the feet of Bill Parcels every day . . . I would work with him on practice schedules, that was one of my jobs. I learned a tremendous amount from him, especially evaluating talent and practice organization."

BuffStampede

I was reading on Rivals that some former Oregon players were talking about how bad our pregame warm ups were and how they were very unorganized, can't disagree there.

buffaholic,

Hawkins made similar errors. His philosophy was that if you only preached positivity that the culture would win because it always expected the positive outcome.

You don't build esteem through big talk and you don't build it through handing everyone a trophy.

HCMM is right - you build it through achievement.

Like his first offseason where all he talked about was beating Hawaii... and then they went and lost. Oops

Am I the only one who heard shades of Hawk's "we need to work on a couple little things, and then this deal is gonna pop" in that interview? Maybe I'm being over sensitive.

Probably or yes you are being oversensitive.

Hawk was, theoretically, correct. It's "coach speak." They all talk that way. Amos Alonzo Stagg once said, "Winning isn't worthwhile unless one has something finer and nobler behind it." He also said, "How 'bout Matty....I couldn't be more proud of him."

Nick Saban was interviewed this morning by Dan LeBatard on Miami radio. His answers were full of Hawkisms...talk of leaders, staying the course, buying into what we're trying to do, developing young men, blah, blah, blah. They all talk that way. That's why they call it coach speak.By the way, Saban was mind-numbingly boring. He said virtually nothing in a half hour interview.Edit...DBT beat me too it.

Dammit! The internet has let me down again. I was looking for the Far Side comic in which the the sloth shoots the gunslinger: "Well, it's no surprise the sloth got him; old Hank was never a very quick draw"

Confused. I'm I the sloth or Old Hank?
