COLORADO
New Coach: Mike MacIntyre
Grade: B+
Having gone 4–21 over the past two seasons, the Buffaloes were in dire need of a turnaround artist. They found one in MacIntyre, who transformed San Jose State from a program that had lost 13 straight games across 2010–2011 to a team that went 10–2 in 2012 and finished the year with a BCS ranking (No. 24) for the first time in Spartans history. MacIntyre’s defensive coordinator background is an immediate salve to a team that had the worst-scoring defense in the FBS (46.0 PPG).

Kingsbury an A? Wow, seems a bit premature - this still smells too much like our recent nightmare.

I'm amazed at the Kingsbury love in the media. Dude may end up being a coaching savant, but he's only been coaching for 5 years and he's coming out from under Sumlin's shadow.

It's based on perception, mostly. For what CU could have realistically expected, MacIntyre is a very solid hire. No way of knowing if he will pan out or not other than by looking at what he's done up until now.

Not what I said but I doubt you could figure that out.

help me out chief, I has the teh dumm. or are coaches a different breed that we should coddle and protect so they can spread their wings in their own time protected from scrutiny and/or performance evaluation ?

This is a big question. You always have to wonder about guys who simply continue what somebody else has made. When we hired Hawk he was "the" hot candidate but taking over a program that needed a rebuilding job is very different than what Hawk did at Boise taking over a program that was already built. Turned out that he wasn't up to the task.

MacIntyre took over a program that was a wreck and turned it into a winner. The question now is can he do it at a higher level but at least we know that he has done it once.

agree...nothing is a 100% layup..but at least he's seen the "wreckage" before

Turner Gill turned around a program prior to going to KU. It's a crapshoot no matter how you look at it.

Turner Gill didn't really turn around Buffalo. He went 2-10 5-7 8-6 and 5-7 when he was hired at KU. It was better than they had been under their previous coach but he didn't turn Buffalo around like HCMM did at SJSU.

As gobuffs stated nothing is 100%. Turning around a San Jose or a Buffalo isn't the same as turning a program around in a major conference. At the same time you have to wonder who would have been successful at Kansas.

That is a worry that we have to have for CU. Not only is MacIntyre's ability to win at a major conference level still a question but also will CU give him the support he needs to do it.

That's a good question. The answer is probably not simple. Football is unique in that you effectively have two different teams on the same team: offense and defense--each with different players and different coaches. That's crazy when you think about it. I can't think of any other sport like this. It's really radically different from any other team sport.

So what does the head coach actually do? Some head coaches really coach, while others just manage and delegate. Maybe one guy is a great fit in one school/situation and really bad in another situation.

Love our hire but wasn't Hawkins an A hire by most of the experts? I wouldn't take much stock into these things
