Officiating : Why College B-ball will never be a Great sport to Watch

Until the kind of BS the Buffs saw on their AZ swing is cured by decent officiating!

33-8 in FTs in favor of ASU, with 20 made to 6 made??? Give me a break! Washington Generals time as far as I'm concerned.

A huge part of CU's game is predicated on driving to the hoop and the Buffs draw only 8 FTs? While tight "D", another CU trademark under Boyle, is rewarded by calls against them to that extent? Why bother?

Pure crap! And its why I don't watch or even listen to the away league games.

It may never be a great sport for you to watch.

But the fact is college basketball has a HUGE viewing audience. CBS/Turner Broadcasting didn't offer up $11 billion for the NCAA tournament because the numbers are in the tank. That doesn't even count the money ESPN and other networks pay just to broadcast regular season games and conference tournament games.

I did not see the game. Heard Mark Johnson's frustration on the radio. I can't really comment. I assume we were not taking it inside because of their big guy and had to settle for outside shots. That would explain why we may not have been getting to the line. But it is certainly curious coming off the refs being made the goat after the UA game. Also, with a douchewad like Ed Rush in charge of officiating, I doubt bad officiating will get dealt with. He couldn't wait to defend the call at UA.

Meh. ASU deserved to win that game. They arguably had the officiating edge, but if you watched the game, you should acknowledge how tentative we were compared to the aggressiveness displayed by ASU. The more aggressive team will usually get more of the calls. Usually this works in our favor, last night it didn't.

ASU could be more aggressive because they knew they would get whatever call they wanted. Our players we getting shoved out of the way on rebounds, ASU players going over the back, getting bumped into when going up with no call, ASU players lowering their shoulders and bulldozing their way through, etc. Its really tough to play aggressive when you get everything called on you on the defensive side and nothing called on the other team on the offensive side. These last two games were two of the worst officiated games I've seen in basketball.

Agreed. We played like ***** at many points last night, but the flow of the game and the outcome were certainly dictated by some terrible officiating. What is it with PAC-12 officiating? It's absolute garbage in all sports for all teams.

In fairness, you can make a case for every sport having its issues. We all know the football isn't spotted *exactly* where the knee went down on the previous play, sometimes it's over a yard off. We don't know who really deserves the ball in those out of control scrums after fumbles when the ref has blown it dead. Teams get away with holding and other penalties all the time, while others get called for ones they don't deserve. I could go on and on.

It can also be argued that those have a much smaller effect on the game than basketball.

99% of the time, the person bitching about the ref is just pissed his team lost.

Don't be that guy.

Frankly, I was a lot more disappointed in our performance last night than the ref's.

Of course the Buffs were tentative, they were forced to be that way by the manner in which the game is called! You proved Wizzers' point with your post and don't even realize it!

I don't mind bad officiating if its equally bad for both teams, as we often see in Boulder, but when one side is so blatantly favored or in CU's case disfavored, it becomes a folly to even try and play! If you can't run your "O" or your "D", each of which you have run successfully in past winning efforts ,because of repeated calls against you, why bother?

If your team is known for tight aggressive, "man" defense and its what you practice regularly and previously won with, yet it is not permitted by an unending string of refs' calls, then you stop doing it and go to a less-favored style of play and that style is precisely less-favored because your guys are less capable of that or not having practiced it as much or, in your own words, your team becomes "tentative".

 Yup. The Buffs had their chance to take care of business these past two games and didn't. End of story. They simply weren't prepared for some of the situations they found themselves in, and that is on the coaches plain and simple.

Total baloney! What were those situations there, oh great BB guru? How should they have been "prepared better" by the coachs? If you can't explain and are good only for crappy generalizations, then just STFU.

I agree. Like I said, I didn't see the game so am wondering how there was a 33 to 8 disparity in free throw shooting. I've seen big margins before, but wow. I mean, 33 to 20 would be huge. 33 to 8 though?

No doubt I'm upset but the refs influenced this game in a big, big way. I'm more upset at the officiating in basketball in general, not just this game.

Crappy generalizations like college basketball will never be a great sport to watch? Or were you thinking something different?

I won't be "that guy", if you readily and honestly admit---with a straight face---that the final call on Chen's shot was the correct call by the officials in over-ruling their initial call AND you admit that ASU has better players and a better coach than CU, fully deserving of their win last night because of those two factors, as well as that their current 2-0 record, tied for 1st in the Pac-12 is deserved by their previous showings.

Why would anyone readily admit that the team with the best players and the best coach always wins? Seems like faulty logic to me.

No, that still one works for me!

One reason the Dance comes across well--I'll admit I watch that--- is that the "less talented" refs have been weeded out and the games are generally left to be decided by the teams on the court.

This was the hardest game for me to watch from an officiating perspective (outside of the last 2m of the UA game).

The frustration was evident, they're waiting for a fair game to be called on the road but part of the maturity process is realizing its never going to be a fair game on the road. In their defense, we drove an awful lot to the hoop for just 8 FT.

 @ the bold. Sure dude.

Yes, Chen's shot was good. Should have never come down to that though. FT shooting cost us that game(2-6 in the last 2 minutes), as well as the inability to handle AZ's pressure D in the last few minutes. We all knew it was going to come at some point in the 2nd half(just watch AZ's game against Florida), and were completely unprepared for it. We also had a lead in the teens in both games and couldn't hold on. When this team gets taken out of their game by physical play they have no answer for it. None.

The Arizona game notwithstanding, the good teams win on the road against **** teams like ASU by overcoming bad officiating.

The refs were obviously an issue this road trip, but the bigger issue is we are simply downright BAD on the road and that has to change -- and soon -- if we want to be an NCAA Tournament team

Not sure I buy that. A ball spotted 6 inches from the end zone when it should be on the 2 yard line late in the 4th quarter with 1 minute left? A blown holding call that can always change the outcome of a game? A fumble that is given to the wrong team because the refs couldn't control the scrum long after it was blown dead?

Refs can equally **** up any sport.

Obviously refs can **** up any game regardless of the sport if they are bad enough, but it has always seemed to me that this happens more with basketball. The refs in basketball can dictate the game much more than say football with how they decide to call it, I do know the same can be said about football as well, it's just not nearly as prevalent IMO. To me, the refs in basketball have way too much sway in a game compared to other sports.

There might be less calls in football, but a 15 yard penalty can affect the outcome of a game more than a team picking up their 3rd foul. JMHO.

No doubt, it just feels like basketball has more of those calls than football. Idk, I've always had an issue with basketball reffing.

I'm not saying the refs can never be blamed for a loss (see UofA game), I am saying last night was the result of poor play on our part. Was I yelling at the refs for some bad calls? Admittedly. But, we lost because we had no answer offensively or defensively for Bachinsky or whatever they call that thing. One no call I was upset at the refs for (block of XJ's layup attempt in the 2nd half) looked like a foul in person and real time, but when I watched the replay later at home it looked like a pretty clean block.

There was definitely a lack of calls when we 'took it inside' and got bumped/banged a lot, but it doesn't explain our lack of outside shooting or the inability to get key rebounds / box out. Just flush this one because it stunk all the way around. We gotta go get 2 this weekend and get back on track.

I haven't harped about the officiating last night because its not why we lost, but I will say things started going downhill when Dre got caught from behind on the breakaway dunk, and no call was made, and that was a giant hack after rewinding it three times to make sure.

Oh, gee! Look at all the "bitching" about bad calls, even thought "it didn't affect the outcome" of the ASU game.

Pretty funny!

C'Ville, in the NFL at least, placement of the ball is a challengeable call, so your 6"---two yd. placement scenario fails.

Same with many NFL calls, there's too much "League integrity" (read: Vegas money) at stake!
