1. Bring in athletes with length (already doing it).
2. Bigger safeties.
3. Faster wide receivers. Don't get hung up on size if a guy can run.
4. Find defensive ends you can grow into tackles.

In short, the formula that a lot of quality programs have followed to build. Recruit athletes, worry about position balance but worry about athletic ability more, make use of what you have.

This may mean you have to work harder. You have to bulk up DEs like you mention for OL, you also may have to find HS safeties who can bulk up an be fast LBs, RBs who can become WRs or CBs. When Mac 1 built the program I can remember him looking at lots of HS QBs, not because he wanted them at QB but because lots of times the best athlete on a HS team ends up at QB. Mac had HS QBs who ended up contributing in big ways at LB, S, TE, WR, even P.

Same thing with defense. Lot of times your best athlete on the team ends up at MLB or S because that is were the coaches can get him into the most plays. In college they can end up moving up to the DL or back to S or Ss can end up at LB or CB.

It would be great if we have a bunch of 4* and 5* kids lining up to commit to us but as bad as we have been they aren't. We still have to compete against them though so we have to find/develop the athletes who can give us a chance until we are winning enough games to get the attention of the guys who are already premium at their positions.

Start beating USC, Oregon, UCLA, etc. for recruits. Lock up the top 4 or 5 kids from Colorado.

Recruiting:

I don't see that happening. I think we need to start with beating the Utah/Boise St/Oregon St./Washington St./Non Pac 12 Schools for all the 3*/4* kids left over in Cali that USC and UCLA/Wash can't take. Then we need to close our doors down and keep Mich. out of Colorado for the best lineman in our own state. It would be great if we could also dip into AZ. and steal a couple of their guys away from Ariz/Ariz St.

Development:
Any projects we take need to have a 50 percent success rate of developing into players who contribute beyond special teams. I am talking about the 6'5" DE tweeners we are targeting right now. Those guys need to see the field in the next 4 years and play well. Get better on the OL and this incoming class has to be successful. We also need to add more Pac 12 speed to match up with the Oregon's and USC's so it then becomes more about discipline/fundamentals and not about just playing so far off the ball out of respect for their athletes.

Speed speed and then more speed.

:yeahthat: Can't have enough speed and when the speed gets here your S&C guy can make 'em even faster, while building them up, since many of even the fastest kids have fairly sloppy running form.

In my revisionist history... our priority #1 in Hawkins transition class was WR, where we desperately needed help. Hawkins only brought in 1 WR (Sherman Lang) who didn't even qualify. Embree's #1 priority was CB (or DT where he didn't land anyone) and he only brought in Gregory Henderson, which is why we basically had to recruit 5 CB's and DT's in the last class. MacIntyre is bringing in LB after LB for visits which is his #1 priority. He is solving our problems early. Or so I am telling myself

You are in big trouble if you are recruiting kids to see the field immediately (we still are, but less than last year)

You are in trouble if you are recruiting "numbers" at positions because of past failures (we most definitely are)

You are doing okay when you can recruit 11 guys on each side and a specialist, all playing different positions. (Haven't seen this since about 2003)

All of this is true but it should only take two years to fix with continuity in the coaching staff. Problem is 3 head coaches in the last five years have led to alot of movement on the roster. I think we had a lot of SR's playing elsewhere this year that could have helped us the past two years for Embree. I'm not saying West/Jefferson etc... would have helped the win loss category but they would have helped balance out the depth chart.

MacIntyre needs to be making some hard decisions. Just because a guy can play early, does not mean he has to play early. Some of Embree's decisions like burning Jeromy Irwin's redshirt this year are a bit preplexing. Empty classes means chasing numbers down the road.

I'm just hoping we see a serious attempt at upgrading team speed. Embree seemed to be down with that, but never really got fast guys at RB or WR, which are probably the two positions you need the speed at the most.

I hope to see a continued emphasis on recruiting linemen on both sides of the ball.

And lastly, beating our some legit schools for recruits. Embree and Hawk did not do that enough. We should be in the conversation for more guys than we are. I feel like it has become the norm to lose recruits to most of the P12, which shouldn't be happening. Then I have to read posts by people that claim we shouldn't expect to beat out said schools for recruits. Then I get sad.

At this point I'm not getting hopes up to take guys away from USC, Oregon, or Stanford. At the same time there is no reason we shouldn't be taking guy that also have offers from Utah, Washington State, UW, the Zona schools, etc. Coaching can do a lot but in the end you have to have talent and more often than not the most talented team wins. To not go for talent is the same as saying we aren't going to try for those wins on the field.

Yep. I don't think anyone other than DBT really expects us to beat out USC or Oregon for recruits anytime soon. But to seemingly concede all P12 level players is absurd in my view. All I'm asking for is some recruiting above our record as BB stated in another thread. It really concerned me when Embree decided to just take a bunch of borderline commits super early in this class. All those offers from big time schools didn't really come..

Problem is, Arizonas, Utah and everyone else isn't beating Ore and USC either....so why do we want to beat them out for their recruits?

Hey now! I didn't say I expect to beat out USC or Oregon. The title of this thread includes "hopes for recruiting." I can hope, can't I?

So far I am not blown away by the guys we are hearing about that Mac is going after and signing. Most of them have little to no interest from other BCS schools. But given our recent track record, maybe it is just that Mac and his team are being realistic especially with the short time left to round out this class.

But I do hope that in future years Mac, et. al. aim higher and win some battles with our Pac 12 "peers"

Pass this year. I expect to win battles next year and beyond or we are not getting any better. Our recruiting is scary awful.

Get kids to come to CU that want to be here...and keep the ones that commit to stay committed. We spend all off season looking and hoping for certain kids that never show up and to be not heard of again. Who cares who is being courted by certain teams - I want guys to be Buffs that want to be Buffs and show up prepared and ready to participate in spring ball. Kids that show up in shape and ready to make a difference, not kids that are coming here because it is the only offer or opportunity at D1 level.

First order of business: recruit Colorado. Second order of business: see first order of business.

Obviously need to hit CA and TX hard too, but as a boulder native, its easy to see that its really a simple formula; CU is top 25 program when they are successfully recruiting Colorado....see history all the way back to Bobby and Dick Anderson days...then Crowder, Mallory, Mac1 - Neu, Barnett to lesser degree, and Hawk all took out of state kids over the same type kids. Embo, just didn't ever get established os not sure how he would have done in state...If close, go with the Colorado kid. Besides, they end up your best recruiters once they are on campus...

In other words, you'd like a repeat of the last 7 years.

Can't disagree to a large extent.

CU's roster will always be mostly out of state players but when we have been good there has always been a core of CO kids as a part of it. When you look at the CO kids playing on other teams that are better than we are there is no way you can say that we shouldn't have at least some of those kids here. Especially when some of those kids didn't even get serious attention from Boulder and had indicated that they would have been willing to at least give a serious listen.

Embo couldn't have cared less about recruiting Colorado
Come on, do we actually expect our coach to remember who recruits are now?

Honestly, I think the failures in state were the fatal blow for recruiting. When the program's down, landing in-state talent is the best chance at getting impact talent and building momentum. Instead, we completely whiffed on the top in-state talent, alienating coaches and recruits along the way. When you can't get a kid to stay in-state to play, why would out of state kids be lining up to join?

Yeah - this one was especially perplexing. I suppose he could defend it by saying he would go into 2013 with backups for all 5 positions with some level of experience (Cotner, Irwin & Nembot) - or 8 guys to compete. Subtract Bahktiari out now. Still, with that strategy, he could have gotten Irwin a lot more snaps.
